I was watching Wall-E with my family the other day (for the first time), and as soon as I saw the people, my wife and I looked at each other and said, "That's happening to us."

Then I had another bite of my microwaved popcorn.

mmmmmm....popcorn

Google Wave, Dev Preview came out last week, to a resounded.... "huh..... ok"
http://wave.google.com/
http://wave.google.com/help/wave/about.html

Quote :
"What is a wave?

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.
A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.
A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time."

i'm watching this demo now, and after seeing Wave in action, i'm on board. It makes sense, and it seems to be very slick and has crazy potential.
http://ignorethecode.net/blog/2009/05/31/google-wave/

The platform was still buggy during the demo, but one part of the demo that jumped out at me was right at one-hour when they demoed integrating other webservices and programs into Wave with the API. They used Twitter as an example, not surprisingly, and the Wave Twitter extension, Twave. During the demo, the Wave PM opened TWave inside Wave and did a search for "Google Wave", and while she was on stage with TWave open, people in the audience were twittering on their own accounts, and their tweets were showing up in real time in TWave. pretty cool.

(don't take the Twitter example as indicative of what Wave is for - the email/IM/wiki/document aspects of it appear to be the most useful and powerful components of the service so far)

this came out of Google Labs last week. somehow I missed it.....
fun to play with
http://www.google.com/squared
http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2009/06/google-squares-the-web-hilarity-ensues.ars

The dynamic columns are pretty cool. I put in, for example, "acc schools" and it brings up a pretty good list.
http://www.google.com/squared/search?q=acc+schools
but then in the blank columns you can add other things, like "mascot" and "city" and it fills them in quickly and pretty accurately

More like, some absolutely bad-ass changes to Maps Street View. Huge wow factor there, it's awesome.

yeah, i'd agree with that.
It's pretty crazy how fast the little white circle/box resizes and orients based on the geography, and the navigation using double-clicks is much, much better. And in full-screen, it's stunning.

i wonder if they can/will show the actual street address sometime

Quote :
"Product Manager Chris Vander Mey, Senior Product Manager for enterprise, is talking about the new sync product. Users need to move from Exchange to Google seemelessly, he says. Calendar, contacts, etc. The product will launch this afternoon.

This effectively lets Google Apps users use Outlook as the interface to Google Apps. For users who don’t want to only use the browser to access email, calendar, contacts, etc., this is an awesome feature.

Google Apps Sync works only with Windows machines for now. No Entourage on the Mac.

Dave fielded a question about Google Wave and how it might integrate with Google Apps. Dave says “it’s gonna get into Enterprise’s hands as fast as we can.” He says traditionally products are baked on the user side and then moved to enterprise, but, Dave says, he wants to move things along more quickly.

If you are an individual user who wants to use this syncing product, you have to sign up for Google Apps Premier. You can then sync Gmail, Google Calendar and Contacts with Outlook. This is only Google Apps premier, so the free product won’t work."

Uh, wow, that is pretty incredible!!

^That's not really a good innovation. They just licensed the sync engine from Microsoft.

Ok, maybe not innovation, but still an advancement of what you can do with Google's services.

full release of Google Quick Search Bar for Mac
http://googlemac.blogspot.com/2009/06/introducing-google-quick-search-box.html

i think I read a while ago that they hired the guy who created the now not-maintained QuickSilver ( http://www.blacktree.com/ ) to implement basically the same thing as the Google Quick Search Bar. I basically use QuickSilver as a launcher anyway, and it looks likt eh QS Bar will do that just fine too

Yeah, between Quicksilver and the spotlight search, I'm not sure that offers any added benefit.

But since it's new, and written by the quicksilver guy maybe it will eventually grow and incorporate new features that will make quicksilver obsolete.

finally got invited into Google Voice just now. sadly my cell phone just died so I only linked my number up with my work phone for now and can't really play with it too much. looks cool though. weird to see stuff happening in almost real time on the computer when i'm doing stuff on the phone.

"worth" what?

It's a nice, free, fast, lightweight browser. My dad uses an older laptop and is still on dial-up - he now uses Chrome as his primary browser because it makes his whole internet experience faster. So.... it's "worth it" to him. If you're happy with whatever you're using now, maybe not.

I could understand asking if installing an application were worth it if you still had 8 MB of RAM and 100 MB of storage, but come on.

I can't quite figure out the motive for releasing caffeine, but do a search for "browser" and compare to the current google serps for a good laugh.

"drove" around Laguna Seca Raceway with that the other day. I don't understand why it only has sections of the track though. It's not like the track has multiple roads or something. It just goes and then disappears and then you can get back on the track a few hundred yards ahead. The addition of the race cars was pretty cool also (but they should have gotten the workers out of the corkscrew to make it more realistic).

Google maps now has live traffic for regular roads, not just expressways. And it works on mobile devices already.

^and now I understand what the "anonymous Google tracking" checkbox means on my Palm Pre:

Quote :
"Background Data Collection [OFF]
Allows Google to automatically collect anonymous location data to improve the quality of location services"

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/bright-side-of-sitting-in-traffic.html
Quote :
"If you use Google Maps for mobile with GPS enabled on your phone, that's exactly what you can do. When you choose to enable Google Maps with My Location, your phone sends anonymous bits of data back to Google describing how fast you're moving. When we combine your speed with the speed of other phones on the road, across thousands of phones moving around a city at any given time, we can get a pretty good picture of live traffic conditions. We continuously combine this data and send it back to you for free in the Google Maps traffic layers. It takes almost zero effort on your part — just turn on Google Maps for mobile before starting your car — and the more people that participate, the better the resulting traffic reports get for everybody."

It's brilliant, really. I always wondered how they did it and thought maybe they were paying people to install GPS trackers in their cars or something ... but now I see I was only slightly wrong

god, a contact chooser for Gmail.... only 5 years late

not active yet, but i wonder if you can edit contacts from that window somehow. That'd be great - it's a PITA to go to Contacts and search for someone so you can edit their info (or delete duplicate entries or something) when the name is right there in your To field all the time

If you notice on google maps during off peak hours you can't see traffic for "regular" road most likely because less people driving them with google maps turned on. So instead of showing just green they go back to normal street color.
