I was actually getting ready to say Shrike and TGL3 get called out plenty.

It's not a conspiracy rjrumfel; liberals simply outnumber conservatives here. They probably avoid or get treated similarly on a more conservative board.

Such is life-

I doubt they would post on a more conservative board. Not enough people to pat their backs. Liberals don't like it when your opinion differs even slightly from theirs.

^^ I don't know, but God forbid I try to call Obama out on anything he does. I'm just a racist when I do. And a partisan hack.

this sounds like something a hack would say conservatives don't like it when your opinion differes even slightly from theirs either. just listen or watch any right-wing news station, talk show, or read the comments on any golo story.

TGL3 is starting to get called out on just about anything (political or otherwise). I'd just ignore his dumb ass anyway since he defended Rolling Stone so vehemently before they got owned (and now refuses to acknowledge they got owned). You're right he calls everything under the sun racist; if he isn't in Sports Talk being a cunt he's in one of the cop threads saying people are saying the opposite of what they actually say. Then someone points that out and he just disappears, so it's whatever.

ANYWAY

The Soap Box isn't even THAT liberal; It's only slightly left of center IMHO.

tl;dr

The users you've mentioned are just assholes and their affiliations don't matter because of that.

One example I can remember, and this is coming from dtownral...I don't care if gay people want to get married. I'm perfectly fine with it. They should have the same legal rights as everyone else. But personally? I don't like to see two guys kiss. I think it's gross. I'm pretty sure he tried to call me a bigot for thinking that two guys kissing is gross.

Legally, I share the same opinion with him and many other liberals. But because I don't like to see two dudes kissing, I'm a homophobe? I don't go out of my way to prevent anybody from doing anything. At the redbox though, I probably wouldn't choose to rent Brokeback Mtn. But b/c my opinion is slightly different, I'm still a bigot.

All you need to do is ally yourself with them at the voting booth (where it matters), and let them gang up on you later like Internet tough guys.

Simple.

They do it because they can and because they are simpletons that see the world in black & white. They can't fathom that someone like you exists; to them it's like a divide by zero error.

Pity them and be done with it-

when have I ever said anything about you being a racist?

I tend to just call things out that I feel are absurd, especially when it comes to bogus controversies or complaints that are thrown towards the President.

you have literally complained about the President issuing a statement on an important matter of the day, saying that he is making the issue all about him.

And I don't deny that. I still feel that he's inserted himself several times in situations where local officials should have been the word. Going all the way back to the "Trayvon could have been my son" comment. To me, saying things like that only serve to fan the flames, not put them out.

But as far as government officials that I hold animosity for, Obama doesn't hold a candle to Harry Reid. There just isn't a thread about Harry Reid that I can bitch and moan in. God I hate that man. Glad he's gone.

Uh, I find plenty of fault in Obama, but this thread isn't about posting legitimate criticisms. It's about Malia's asthma, Benghazi, and his "unconstitutional" executive actions which is all bullshit. But hey, if pointing out things like,

-saving the economy
-providing 16M Americans with health insurance
-making huge strides towards fixing climate change
-Cuba, net neutrality, gay marriage, weed, Iran, etc.....

makes me a partisan hack, then you can all get fucked because my man is clearly #winning.

You're right but the problem is the amount of vitriol he receives is absolutely partly about his color. Denying that is simply delusional. However you and others absolutely have valid reasons for criticism.

No, he clearly made a lot of foreign policy mistakes, especially towards the Middle East early on in his Presidency. Ones which he's paid for, learned from, and is now working on repairing. A lot of that was driven by campaign promises to end wars, or being "too left" I suppose, but it's hardly a partisan criticism. Presidents in general make a lot of foreign policy mistakes, it's part of the gig, what differentiates them is how they handle the aftermath.

I don't necessarily see his interactions with Israel a success or a failure. Just a waste of time - for any president. I don't see what the hard-on is for Israel. We act like it will someday be a springboard for democracy in the middle east, where democracy will spread from Israel like some beneficial disease to the rest of the area. Should we try to keep them as allies? Sure, we will need a base of operations if we ever get into WWIII. But the effort my side wastes talking about Obama and Bibi is just exhausting.

But don't mind me, I'm just spewing more partisan hackery.

I would argue that his iraq policy was a failure for being too ideological, and the way Obama's dealt with russia has also been a failure.

In Iraq, Obama was too focused on pulling the troops out, rather than the medium term stability, which lead to ISIS.

With Russia, it's possible there's nothing Obama could have done to cause Putin to go nuts, but it's clear Obama never developed a rapport with Putin. But between Iran, Cuba, NK and staying out of some other mid-east conflicts, his foreign policy is average at worst.

But Obama's domestic policy will probably go down as one of the most highly regarded by history for the era. We really couldn't have asked for a better situation post recession. The biggest problem is inequality, but I think anyone can see this is because republicans would never support the programs necessary to fix this while Obama is in office (and there's still time to make some moves on this). He hasn't come close to taking anyone's guns, gays have more rights, pot is more legal, he's pushing for free community college, illegal immigration hasn't skyrocketed.

All done with an unprecedented amount of filibustering by our current obstructionist congress.

Obama extended our deployment in Iraq longer than the agreement that Bush made, he delayed the pullout

What could we have done to create medium term stability short of using a time machine or drastically increasing the number of troops for a few more decades?

[Edited on April 13, 2015 at 1:52 PM. Reason : the agreement was signed in 2008, Obama was not president]

Ha, i don't think these are the only options, and there likely isn't anyone qualified enough to give a real answer to this here.

I don't think ISIS was inevitable, and we KNOW ISIS was a direct result of Iraq being invaded. I can really only say based on intuition that the drawdown could have been handled differently to prevent ISIS. The Snowden docs revealed the CIA had been tracking them-- it really just depends what we knew when.

Just because you watch the daily show doesn't mean you voted for Obama. I watch the daily show, or used to rather, and I didn't vote for Obama.

And I didn't pour through websites looking for stats, just basing it off of my own anecdotal experience. The people I know who voted for Obama, including some of my own family, could care less about what is going on in the world around them. They voted thinking they would get something. That 8 year really is more politically aware than the people I speak of.

Quote :
"President Obama Demands Critics Tell Him What's Wrong With TPP; Of Course We Can't Do That Because He Won't Show Us The Agreement"

Quote :
"President Obama is apparently quite annoyed by the fact that his own party is basically pushing against his "big trade deals" (that are not really about trade). Senator Elizabeth Warren has been pretty aggressive in trashing the TPP agreement, highlighting the fact that the agreement is still secret (other than the bits leaked by Wikileaks). In response, President Obama came out swinging against the critics of TPP arguing that "they don't know what they're talking about."

He insists that it's unfair to compare TPP to NAFTA because they're different deals:

“You need to tell me what’s wrong with this trade agreement, not one that was passed 25 years ago.”

Well, Mr. President, I would love to do that, but I can't because you and your USTR haven't released the damn text. It takes an insane lack of self-awareness for the guy who once declared his administration "the most transparent in history" to demand people tell him what's wrong with his trade agreement, when that agreement is kept entirely secret.

Furthermore, multiple experts concerning things like the corporate sovereignty ISDS provisions and the intellectual property chapters have gone into great detail as to why the leaked versions have problems. They're not complaining about NAFTA. They're actually complaining about the latest drafts -- but the USTR won't acknowledge them because they're talking about leaked versions.

In fact, the only real complaints I've seen relating to NAFTA concern the fact that the government says one thing about these big agreements, but the reality is something different.

Of course, he attacks the fact that people are complaining about the secrecy as well, by arguing (misleadingly) that the deal is not at all secret:

“The one that gets on my nerves the most is the notion that this is a ‘secret’ deal,” Obama said. “Every single one of the critics who I hear saying, ‘this is a secret deal,’ or send out emails to their fundraising base saying they’re working to prevent this secret deal, can walk over today and read the text of the agreement. There’s nothing secret about it.”

I'm a critic. I can't walk over today and read the text of the agreement. Obviously, President Obama is only talking about elected members of Congress. But that's not what they're complaining about. They're complaining about the fact that the American public cannot see the text of the document or discuss the specifics of what's in there. And that's absolutely true.

And even the fact that members of Congress can actually see the document is tremendously misleading. Yes, members of Congress are allowed to walk over to the USTR and see a copy of the latest text. But they're not allowed to take any notes, make any copies or bring any of their staff members. In other words, they can only read the document and keep what they remember in their heads. And they can't have their staff members -- the folks who often really understand the details -- there to explain what's really going on.

And it all comes back to the point that Senator Warren has been making for a long time: that former USTR Ron Kirk has admitted that a big reason why they keep the document secret is that when they tried being more transparent in the past, the agreement failed. As Warren says, if being transparent with the American public means the agreement will fail, then the problem is with the agreement, not the public.

“When I keep on hearing people repeating this notion that it’s ‘secret,’ I gotta say, it’s dishonest,” Obama continued. “And it’s concerning when I see friends of mine resorting to these kinds of tactics.”

Here's a little test: can we see the current TPP documents today? No? Then it's secret. Claiming otherwise is what's dishonest."
