those rims would look good on the original lexus ls400.

and that mode year 911 has an ugly mug.

but none of that matters i guess... cuz it is a porsche

Wow the 996 turbo 6 speed weighs 88lbs more than my legacy

So 2 more cylinders 1 more turbo and a beefy awd system = worth it

996 is still dry sump right ?

Only the Turbo, GT3, and GT2 are dry sumps.

All other 996 models have what Porsche calls an "integrated dry sump". The oil is still separated from the crank case in some way (I forget how), but there definitely isn't an external oil reservoir gathering oil via scavenge pump.

Top Gear drove the new 991 911 (unveiling in Sep at Frankfurt) back in Feb!

Here are their impressions:

porsche released a teaser video of a semi-camouflaged 991.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mSjtFcIk24

some people noticed this in the video:

Quote :
" It's hard to notice, but see those extra lines going up and to the right at the end of the gear shift pattern? In today's manual transmission Porsche models, reverse gear is up and to the left, meaning that if we're looking at this correctly, the extra etching in the 911's shift knob would appear to be corroboration of a seventh gear."

It's been said for months that the new 911 would have a 7 speed. Cool pic, but not new news. Sadly I don't think this is enough to offset the increased "softening up" of the 911

if the gears aren't spaced in a useful manner who cares how many it has.

If my subaru 5 speed was as bullet proof as the six speed i'd never swap it out because the six speed ratios are too close to be useful. If you put a ppg 1-4 set in the 6 speed 4th and 5th are the same gear ratio. When i do put the six speed in i'd like to get one that was broken and put the legacy gt spec be ratios in it (much longer gearing could theoretically hit 200+ mph rather than the 160s/170s of the STI)

all i'm saying is paddle shifting through 7 clicks isn't bad but rowing an extra gear... they better damned well make sure its worth it and not just another annoying gear.

I'm pretty sure 7th gear will be the highway cruising mileage gear.

Also I'm kinda ticked off that they made the car longer, AGAIN and did away with the hand brake. Now it's got one of those gay electronic parking brakes

yeah but what's 6th?

i guess I'm just worried that if one needs 7/8 gears in a car to make it fast the car probably has a peaky power band and you're going to be working damned hard to keep it there.

I guess I'm just used to turbo cars where you have 3-4000 rpm of consistent power to work with

This will help the car get better fuel mileage. I'd say that's the main goal as we know the 911's flat 6 engine is not peaky.

eh mouses, laptops, pens, furniture, etc have come and gone by several automakers over the years.

this is something an automaker has ventured into for the first time, so i found it unusual (and it is an unusual niche product in the first place anyway).

Leaked photos of brand new 2012 911 (internal code 991)

Slightly larger than the 997, but lighter. I'm a fan of the looks!

Not 100% sure on the rear (taillights look strangely Aston-Martinish for some reason). Side is fantastic though. It's been a long time since I thought a plain 911 was really just a sexy car aesthetically. This one does it though.

How much lighter, link please! Kudos to Porsche for keeping the cars light. I suppose Corvette deserves credit here as well, those two and the Nissan 370z are practically the only cars I can think of getting lighter for newer models. I hope that catches on...

Certainly becoming a more grown up car. I wish they'd make it smaller. :/

^^I agree on the Aston Martin comment. I've seen other people mention that online.

^not too sure, maybe 80 lbs. But I wholeheartedly agree with you Ahmet, they need to STOP making it bigger! If people want a large Porsche coupe they should reboot the 928 and build it off the Panamera chassis.

Intercoolers are housed in the rear bumper on 996/997 turbos, just above the vents. I'll try to post a pic if you want, it's super neat.

This is a 997, but the placement of the intercooler is identical to the 996. Notice that the fender opening is the inlet for the charge cooling air and the bumper slots are the outlet. The engine air intake is through the engine lid.

Ahmet was actually showing you that the inter-coolers are not under the spoiler, but rather housed in the corners of the rear bumper...

Hiro, I not only agree but it's even fairly easy to work on. I just wish the GT2 wasn't so expensive. I just want gobs of turbo power, stiff suspension, retarded rearward weight bias and not much else...

Jesus Christ people, we're splitting hairs here but...it's pretty clear I already conceded to Ahmet's point. But that has nothing to do with the fact that a turbo has a large FIXED wing on the back.
