My Verizon signal in Apex is so bad that I constantly have ZERO bars, and even have to walk to one side of the house and hold my phone up to the window if I want my text message to go through - otherwise it'll say it fails

i'm genuinely interested in your evidence that verizon doesn't have the best phone coverage nationwide

i'd even say their 3G/4G is best (coverage/speed) of the big three, but i haven't bothered to look it up

Aside from the random LTE outages and crap service at my parents' house in the boonies, I'd consider it far from being as shitty as the others.

I'm getting close to my upgrade date with AT&T. Going to have to make two big decisions:

- Switching to Verizon, and

- Switching to an iphone.

Switching to Verizon all depends on what kind of deal I can get. I pay about $105 a month for my data plan with AT&T. My gf somehow pays $80 for the same plan at Verizon. If I can swing that, I might jump over. Or if we can get a joint plan that also lowers the bill. We'll see...but I've actually had a good relationship and good coverage with AT&T/Cingular during my 12+ year run with them.

The Iphone/Android is going to be a little tougher. I love my Samsung Captivate...but it definitely has the "computer problems" (freezes, lags...does all the things computers do when they're overworked or too full). I know a lot of that has to do with the fact I have very little storage on my phone. I do love the size and quality of the screen. Battery life is starting to struggle a little bit, but its still pretty solid.

By update time, I will have a Macbook Pro for the office, regular macbook for home, and possibly even an ipad. Shouldn't I just get an iphone to sync everything up easily. I'm not a big techie that needs an Android platform to do all of my own shit.

What say you?

If you get an iPhone, you'll want to be on AT&T for HSPA+ (almost 4G) speeds, not a must, just realize if you go iPhone on Verizon you'll be limited to 3G speed.

For Android, you should look at new phones that have Android 4.0 (ICS) the freezing, lagging, whatever is non-existent and a lot faster than older Android phones.

But considering you'll be on an all Apple platform, you may want to consider the iPhone for cross-device syncing and cloud storage.

It's completely up to the phone manufacturers which phones get which OS, not Android (whoever that is)...guessing you meant Google.

Phones can be considered outdated just months after purchase...nothing new there. Also if you're considering getting a 2 year contract and getting a $10 phone as part of that commitment (or even a $99 iPhone at that), I don't think you should be worried about outdated phones.

Ha. Maybe where you live (Where do you live that you would say this?). That's not the case here in Raleigh. I was with Sprint for a few years and I would be unable to get data despite having 3-5 bars of 3G data, routinely. Calls would disconnect regurally too. Since moving to Verizon everythings been perfect. I can do more with 1 bar of data on Verizon than I could with 3+ on Sprint.

After having AT&T, Sprint and Verizon over the last 10 years I'd have to say that in Raleigh:

Verizon>>AT&T>>>>>>>Sprint

Eh, not defending Sprint here, but I have been with them for 12 years and yes service can be spotty in some areas, but I have always been able to make a call when I needed to ... except for some places indoors, yeah, a bit inconvenient, but I've payed much less over the years, so that's worth it.

for me it's more about data performance than voice performance, but even the voice was substandard imo (at least around raleigh).

i assume you have wifi at your house and your work so you dont even need to use your phone's data plan while you're at home or work, which are the two places most people spend the majority of their time

more and more businesses and venues have wifi and will continue to, and some larger cities are trying to have complete wifi coverage in certain high traffic areas

so in a couple years, or 10 or 20, most places not out in the wilderness will have wifi coverage

i think you're living in the trees a bit. sure there has been a day or two where LTE (a very small part of their network as a whole) was having issues, but if you look at their network overall, it's clearly superior.

there's a reason verizon is the clear winner every year in the customer satisfaction surveys...

^^all the people in the comments are saying that is not a big deal, but if I stop getting timely updates on my gnex then I'm gonna be pissed. That was pretty much the main reason I got one. In 2 years I'll have an iPhone.

maybe just streaming video the entire time?

wonder how much bandwidth you'd use if you streamed netflix for a month straight

probably something that is controllable. for example, downloading a series of files from my server in a local colo.

Torrents is by far the easiest way to max out your bandwidth and keep it maxxed out. Just queue 100 or so 1080p videos, allow unlimited download, limit your upload, allow 10+ torrents to download at a time.... it's quite easy. I could probably stream something in the range of 7-10TB of data a month from home.

I used to get about 1.7Mbps download on my old 3G phone, if I could stream torrents via USB Tether, I probably could have done about 125GB +/- a week, depending on my stationary location and fluctuating traffic throughout the day (how busy the tower is)

So he had a sustained connection of at least 7Mbps over 3G

Loving chrome holy shit.

Only.complaint is links seem "less sensitive" than on the stock browser. You need to be more precise when clicking them.

Awesome feature: bye bye chrome to phone. Settings>devices allows you to pull up open tabs on chrome devices. For me I have my laptop, my phone, and my tablet. Haven't been able to test it yet, but I should be able to pull phone tabs on my desktop or tablet tabs on my phone, or any other combination. Fucking awesome.

Lacks flash support, that's a minus. But adobe stopped developing mobile flash, sooo... understandable I guess.

Switching between tabs is neat, as is the swipe to close a tab

Yeah, that was pretty cool.

(For those without it... if you fat finger select multiple links, it provides a mini blown up pop up so you can select the link you want)

Also, looks like pulling tabs from devices onto the desktop isn't an option... I can pull across devices fine, and using a device pull from my desktop.... hmmm maybe I'm missing the option on chrome desktop

My trusty Droid X is about to be retired... My wife knocked it out of my hand while I was showing an embarrassing vid of her doing tequila shots and now the screen is fux0red.

I had rooted Gingerbread with the main benefit of free wifi tethering. Is there any new phone to avoid bc you cannot root yet or you cannot wifi tether for free? Or are they all fair game?

Wifi tether is hit or miss on certain phones, not sure about compatibility.

Personally I'd check compatibility for this app, as it's the only one that doesn't require root and can't be tracked by cell provider, even though it's USB:
http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

This one too (no need for root, certain phones):
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svtechpartners.wifihotspot
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.svtechpartners.wifihotspotdemo (test it first to see if it works)

Don't see any names I recognize for development on the Infuse. I'd look at anything cm7 based if you are tired of touchwiz. Also looks like there's a MIUI build if you're looking for something different.
