What are those called?

Do they still exist?

How horrifyingly unhygienic were they?

i still run across one every few years in a rural gas station bathroon or something.

they didn't recycle the towel, the used portion wasn't used again. the towl is washed after it's all used and started over again.

number i've seen: lots

number i've touched: zero

to me, it's the same as using "that rag hanging on the stove handle" everyone typically has. it drops on the floor, has been used a million times, but everyone still uses after washing up. pretty wasteful, but i reach for a paper towel if i want to make sure my hands are clean.

yeah, i don't use hand towels in my kitchen very often. i go through lots of paper towels because the idea of a hand towel being used so many times grosses me out. but i do buy the select-a-size paper towels so i can at least not waste a lot of paper towels

if you pull on it, the portion that you pull out of the front hasn't been used and is clean. the portion that goes in the back is dirty. after all the clean portion has pulled out, the owner theoretically cleans it and stuffs it all back in the front. so theoretically, you're always using clean, unused cloth towel.

we have those here at work. we have a company that comes and replaces them once a week. they just take the towel roll and replace it with a clean one.

It's pretty sanitary actually assuming they use proper laundering. think about how many hands have touched that paper towel dispenser handle.

ibt we have touch-less dispensers.

i used to think that the towel just ran continuously through a loop and got wrung out in the machine to make it dry again.

now that i have experience with it, i realize how ridiculous that was

not completely sure of what the numbers are. "the greater the impact"

idk, fwiw

seriously. but after seeing how many dudes on this board are so into style and fashion, it's not all that surprising. bunch of pussies. when i was a kid, there used to be one in my grandad's machine shop. i used it all the time, alongside a bunch of dirty, greasy mechanics. i think that some people still don't understand how it works, even though it's been explained a few times in this thread. you're not using a dirty towel. it's clean (if you pull it enough and make sure you're not touching a part that's already been used)

I first saw them when I went to Dublin in 2010...they were everywhere. I've seen them a couple places here in NC since

I really hope the busted face means you are kidding or trolling. I don't understand why being a guy and caring, to an extent, about how things look has to be mutually exclusive. It's really only an opinion I have run across in the South too it seems like (especially in SC where I live currently).

I hate those - the water and other junk settles in that little groove at the bottom of the dryer and you have to be super careful or you end up just dunking your fingertips into that mess

Meh...I put three hooks on the wall behind my sink. Counter scrubdown rag, dish wiping towel, hand wiping towel. They get washed every week when I do laundry. Seems like a good system. The rag on the stove handle is nothing but a pot holder for me.

Good idea to separate out that frivolous double ply paper onto separate rolls.

There was this show one time called "Extreme Cheapskates" and one of the families on the show used washcloths as toilet paper.

They put the soiled washcloths in a basket next the toilet. The mom would then bleach them weekly and put them back out to be used. There were some that still had poop stains on them

^^^^well, just like with a regular paper towl dispenser, you should go ahead and pull the towel or press the lever before you wash your hands, so when you're done washing your hands, you just touch the towel or the cloth and don't touch anything that was touched by the person before you.

but if everyone washes their hands first...

you're like that first girl to "hover" over a clean toilet

don't ask me why I know about that

Good point. Except a lot of people don't wash their hands very thoroughly....so while you may be the first to touch it without washing...you won't be the first to touch it and get germs all over it.
