^Agreed. It adds a 5 second delay to actually sending the message and displays "Undo" at the top much like when you delete a message, etc. Clicking undo takes it back to the editing stage before you sent it. Supposedly if you close your browser it sends automatically.

so, with G Voice, you have to get a new number?

But you can connect your old number to it, right? So you keep your old number, and all calls and messages are forwarded to your GVoice number?
.... but then your cell phone rings whenever either number is called? Or to get the GVoice features, do they hvae to call the new number?

yeah you get a new number from google that you have to give out to everyone

your cell phone still keeps its own number so people won't NOT be able to still reach you through it

but to get google's services like voicemail transcription they have to call you at the google number.

it may be a huge pain in the ass at the moment
but i'd rather people deal with it once now than have to do it later when i change my cell provider

i know number portability and blah blah but they're pretty stingy about letting you cancel your contract sometimes when you try to use those rate hikes as the reason you're cancelling. the only leverage they hold over my head is my number - they can decide it's no longer portable to another service.

i'd like to be free from that and say f you haha


and my second reason - i've received a bunch of these number change emails recently - mostly from friends switching to at&t for the iphone. i realized when i got the last email that it wasn't that big of a deal for me to go and change the guy's number - it took all of 10 seconds. i'm hoping everyone is thinking the same way - and even if they don't update their phone books, it's not like my old number will cease to work - which would be the case if i ever asked them to do it in the future for like a new cell number or something.

I like the "Please wait while Google Voice attempts to contact "Recorded Name"" a lot better than the absurd and random ringback you had with GrandCentral. Interface seems a bit more polished as well. I've been waiting forever to have the SMS feature too.

and i've been reading all this coverage on it too

only thing i can think of is it's free so if they crash, i can't bitch and moan at anyone like i can with sprint

but then again, i can just tell people to call my sprint number if need be - even though it'd be a hassle

ok so after using it for a bit, the only downside is now you have 2 phone numbers
you can't really "get rid of" the one you're having calls forwarded to because outgoing calls from that number still have your original number on them. you'd have to use google voice's web service to place all your calls if you wanted the google voice number to show up in everyone's caller ID

they may allow number porting in the future, but still, your phone would have to have its own number so on other people's caller ID, you'd have a diff number than your google voice number.

yeah, but I guess that is part of what I "don't get" about this service - if they started doing stuff like number porting, then Google would essentially become a phone service company> From what it looks like now, GVoice is just an add-on that any person on any carrier can use. Google cannot meddle with your carrier-appointed number right now, and cannot actually change any of the services that your carrier provides, so GVoice seems to just piggy back on top of your existing service.

If they wanted to go to the next step, then I guess Google would have to get into the carrier business, or maybe they could partner with carriers so the GVoice service could be added onto your existing number and plan

it's tight - voicemail transcription, screen calls, listenin on voicemails and decide to pick up or not, SMS gateway through that number, keep your voicemails online - no more checking your voicemail by dialing in a number (though you can if you wanted to) - i like the web interface better - like an email inbox for voicemails

That just reminded me of some news from 2006 when I worked at Infineon (before the DRAM unit was spun off into Qimonda). The news was confidential at the time, but, seeing as how Qimonda is in Chapter 11 now, i don't think it will make much of a difference....

anyway, in April 2006, Qimonda got an order from "Cardinal" (the internal codename for Google) to provide them with 60,000 2GB DDR2 modules per month for the next 9 months, for a total of $124 Million.
That broke down to 1.1 PetaBytes of RAM (1080 TeraBytes), and almost 10 million DRAM chips (we were using 512Mb chips at the time)

why a mistake? it would fit in pretty well with google's mission - Twitter would ad a huge amount of information for them to analyze, and it could be pretty easily integrated into other services (chat, maps).

although, it would be ironic for some high profile people who have recently left google and moved to twitter

^ i think i might be missing something, but how the hell is it any cheaper or more efficient to call google voice which then calls you back when connected, just to call a number? google voice isn't mobile to mobile or anything, and you already get free domestic calling with most AT&T plans. so i guess the only thing you might be able to save money on is international calls?

sprint does, or did. I had no success in getting my super-rep to add it though. They have/had one addon that did 3 numbers free calling and one that does first incoming minute free. I could only get her to change my sero 300 to sero 1250 after they had removed those plans.

Anybody been using the gvoice service? I just got an email alert for a voicemail that my friend left for me on Saturday. I noticed the missed call on Saturday and called him back, but I never got the voicemail so I just assumed that he didn't leave one. What's up with the 2+ day delay?
