any of you guys see the helvetica documentary? I'm a designer/type nerd so I really liked it, but it's one of those movies that I think most people would find really interesting. It was really well done.

http://www.helveticafilm.com/

I also just saw Dig! for the first time and thought it was pretty cool. Some annoying characters, but a good movie nonetheless

Our Brand Is Crisis -- Underimpressed
King Corn -- nothing new if you've read anything by Michael Pollan. The film-makers were too self-interested and didn't seem to take the film itself seriously.
Deep Water -- AMAZING
Manufacturing Consent -- excellent
The Corporation -- excellent, can't find my copy
Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? -- very good
Tobacco Money Feeds My Family -- If you're actually from North Carolina, you'll really appreciate this movie.

I pre-ordered Food Inc. We'll see how it goes.

Good way? Bad way? Can your heart be ripped out in a good way? The movie is simply enthralling. The long and short of it is that a Brit, with no sailing experience whatsoever, attempted to make it around the world in a boat he designed.

This has disaster written all over it, and rightfully so, but the way the story is told is completely riveting and you find yourself being very sympathetic with an everyman who does some less than noble things.

Planet B-Boy - follows several international crews to the Battle of the Year world b-boy championships
Word Wars - like Spellbound, but about competitive Scrabble instead of spelling bees
Murderball - about quadriplegic wheelchair rugby, lots of tuff
Style Wars - classic documentary about the growth of the graffiti movement in the early 80's
Modify - about extreme body modification
Supersize Me - dude eats nothing but McDonald's for a month, hilarity ensues
The King of Kong - the story of arch-rival Donkey Kong nemeses duking it out in 8 bits
Wordplay - about the national crossword puzzle championships
Dark Days - about homeless people living in an abandoned railway tunnel in NYC
Lost Boys of Sudan - about... the Lost Boys of Sudan

"Under Pressure: Making the Abyss"...not necessarily what youre looking for, but as far as "making of" docs go, this is one of the best Ive seen. There were a lot of problems on the set of this movie (technical, emotional, etc), and its somewhat surprising how it was made (actors doing most of their own stunts). Its on disc 2 of the 2-disc DVD set, so you probably wont be able to Netflix it.

Just watched Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? tonight. I thought it was really good, but not great. It was a neat story, but it wasn't some deep revelation about the inner workings of the art world.

Standard Operating Procedure.

Also by Errol Morris.

The Fog of War guy.

About Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse.

Basically interviews with a bunch of assholes and like two non-assholes.

Errol Morris' interview techniques are unparalleled.

He developed something called the "Interrotron." Two cameras are set up, one facing Errol Morris, and one facing the interviewee. The respective facial images are put on a teleprompter in front of the other camera. So it's like they're looking at a person, but they're really looking into a camera lens.

The result is pretty amazing and creepy.

The Thin Blue Line (1988)

Pretty intense documentary about a man on death row accused of a crime he did not commit in Texas (of course).

The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl - I had to watch it for a class in college and even though it's like 3 hours, it's worth it to me... it actually tries to paint a fair picture of her without just screaming NAZI NAZI and it also looks at her life after Nazi Germany, which is just as interesting to me

Man on Wire was probably the last one I watched, which was pretty awesome... I need to get around to watching more

I just watched The Garden. Its about a group of Latinos' struggle to save an urban garden in south central LA. Very powerful and moving, highly recommended.

Anything from Terry Jones: Medieval Lives, Barbarians, Crusades. He's done a bunch of others ones too.

Stephen Fry's "The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive"

"A History of Britain" featuring Simon Schama

"A History of Scotland" featuring Neil Oliver

Yeah, I'm kinda biased towards BBC documentaries.

weird, i just had someone recommend this last night. i'd never heard of it before.

Errol Morris has another good one called 'Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr.' Very interesting profile of an execution technician turned holocaust denier.
