I think if he didn't use "like" as if he were a 17 year old girl from the valley that interview would only be like 10% as bad

Capital City Metal festival this Saturday...

http://southlandballroom.com/2011/05/23/capital-city-metal-fest-sat-may-28th/

Seems like it might be a cool show to see and 10 bucks to get in. I'd probably only try to catch the last couple bands.

I think the band Hephystus has a pretty kick ass sound and I would really like to see them play.

last night at a wedding i was talking to some new friends at a table about how we all pretty much listen to anything.

the convo turned into "well, when you are at home by yourself, cleaning and whatnot, what pandora station is most likely to be playing?"

everyone went around and it stopped when i said "goatwhore"

it turned into a convo about why i love death metal.
i explained it while wearing a pink toga dress and glitter gold heels.

it was awesome

The only problem with metal as a whole, is that this genre of music produces more fucking snobs than any other genre of music.

Im guilty of this too I suppose, but it seems every metal head is a snob about which bands are good and which one sucks.

Really i just tend to hate metal that sounds like something i've heard before, unless it is substantially better. Copy cat shit annoys the fuck out of me with the one exception of Stoner/Doom metal. When you are playing power chords at like 60bpm its kinda hard to experiment drastically.

The problem is probably that i am listening to music like 24/7 except when i'm in class so even though i have tons of music most of which isn't metal, the things that i like get old really fast and when i discover new bands that are doing the same thing that a band did 10 years ago i just kind of feel like they're cheating. I also have a shit load of music in my regular shuffle rotation that i can't fucking stand and that probably makes me hate the similar bands that i don't have any of even more haha

Light This City has been playing non-stop for me for the past week or so. Since I came across their Facing The Thousand and Remains of The Gods albums, I obtained their entire discography. Helluva band. It's a shame they disbanded...

I dig it and i have and listen to a ton of it, but do something different that hasn't been done by every other band that copies in flames/at the gates. This band sounds exactly like a shit version of The Absence, which is a good progression from the early Melodeath stuff, but its hard to listen to this kind of stuff when you've already heard Eucharist, Armageddon - Crossing the rubicon, Edge of Sanity or any of the other early melodeath stuff that is exactly like it except better. I think there is a sense of emotion that is captured in those early melodeath records that the new generation doesn't really grasp. I wish i could call it anger, because i think that those guys were making this music because they were angry, but its not really that simple.

I think that is my main problem with most bands. I feel like copycat bands only make music because they like their predecessors, and that comes across to me as being less intense and emotive.

Light this city in their entirety remind me of this song except with a chick on vocals... This shit was released in 1997, 9 years before the 'good' Light This City album

Farmakon is another band that i like a lot but its hard to pretend like i can't find their riffs in earlier music literally note for note... My favorite song by them ends with the exact same clean chord progression as With the sun.

In my own personal musical journeys i try to draw influences from shit that isn't metal at all. I listen to a shit ton of metal and most of it sounds the same to me and that just kinda drives me crazy...

[Edited on June 10, 2011 at 3:03 AM. Reason : ^realistically i probably have and own more melodic death metal albums than anyone else on this site]

Hey Astral, I'm not trying to poke fun at you or anything, but you complain a lot about:

Quote :
"do something different that hasn't been done by every other band "

Perhaps you could be a bit more encouraging and share your wealth of knowledge. Here's an example:

"Oh, you like Light This City. Have you listened to __________ or ________?" Give some suggestions from smaller bands or no-name bands that you know fit the genre/style. THAT would be more helpful.

I'm sorta new to this whole metal/hardcore stuff. I like Ankla, Breaking Benjamin, and Pantera as well. But that's about all I know. I could use some pointers in finding more music like Light This City.

We get it that you've heard it all and find newer artists as unoriginal, ripoff, copy cats...

I did. I said they're a shit version of the absence or eucharist

One of those bands is new one is old. The absence is definitely a copycat band but their second album steps away from sounding like generic melodeath.

I talk mad shit about bands. Idk I think the whole point of early metal from black sabbath to those early punk bands to slayer or the early doom stuff was to bring something different to the table. Most of those guys were just pissed off and hated pop music or pop rock/metal but my point still stands. I love at the gates just as much as the next guy but what does the world of music really gain from my shitty take on slaughter of the soul riffs? Nothing. Its like pollution

People like music that is familiar. Metal is supposed to be unfamiliar. I don't understand.

I tend to agree with that. Its why I like bands like Fear Factory and Sepultura. On Sepulturas later albums, like "roots" when they started adding different tribal type drum rhythms....that shit is sweet.

I also agree that there has to be a genuine sense of emotion, especially anger.

oh and Nile, they also incorporate other types of music into death metal

Nile is definitely a good example although I don't like them that much. I think their music is so fast sometimes that you can't even really tell what they're doing which sucks because a lot of brilliance is lost. Melodic death just tends to be the genre with the most sameage going on. I think the term itself is used to describe bands with that early gothenburg sound, let's face it most metal is melodic and that shit isn't even really that similar to death metal

I wouldn't say there has to be anger or disdain

I don't know Karl (Nile) personally but since we live really close to each other I see him randomly at like Panera and stuff sometimes. It's always weird for some reason.

Anyway, I haven't found a lot of new metal bands I really enjoy lately :/ I still listen to a lot of metal, but mainly material from the same bands I listened to up until 2 years ago or something. Maybe new albums by those bands but not a lot of new stuff. And that isn't to say that I don't think there are new, good bands out there, more that I guess I'm just not as in touch with new metal. Makes me feel old.

Also, I went to a local metal show near me the other day to see a friend's band and I felt like I had heard every single riff played there that night by every band haha.

Jesus christ is there a band that John Baizley isn't doing art for?

CalledToArms, to be fair most of the newer (popular) music is more along the lines of post kylesa/mastodon type music. Relapse seems to be signing that kind of southern doom/sludge shit these days because it is starting to take over. Most of the local venues that were booking regular death metal or any other fast tempo metal (for lack of a better term) seem to be declining in shows and the crowds at shows seem to be declining. I have not been to a show at Volume 11 other than summer slaughter last year and the show that i played in probably a year. There used to be shows there all the time, but it seems like the same 4-5 bands play shows every year and its just gotten old. I think the stoner/doom/sludge bands (Howl, Dark Castle, Indian, Cough) that are just becoming really popular are more accessible and are just as pissed off as the early metal dudes were, the only difference is they're more akin to Black Sabbath in terms of tempo this time around.

That band Kvelertak is definitely metal, a little cheesy... very surprised there is a band from norway that sounds like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Norwegian_heavy_metal_musical_groups basically like 95% of those are some derivative of black metal lol...

Here's another from a band I recently saw at King's.

No, I haven't read through this thread at all, so I've no idea if anybody has mentioned them or not or even likes this genre of metal.

Agalloch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ggaD0q4wso

Production isn't tits on that one, but it's just about my favorite bit of music they've ever done. The concert, with the combination of delicious alcohol and whatever the fuck incense John was burning on stage, was bordering on a religious experience. Music music music...

[Edited on June 11, 2011 at 1:11 AM. Reason : And yeah, cheesy but catchy. I like them for that.]

I haven't listened to any of those bands except reverend bizarre and i have a split from them with Electric Wizard. If you could describe them that would be awesome... If i want new music i usually just look on what.cd or last.fm for similar bands or i look and see who they are playing with if they are a touring band. I've killed my what.cd account so i've been out of the loop on downloading random shit for a while.

If they're just atmospheric doom/stoner metal like that electric wizard split then i can give you a bunch of that shit my favorite being bloody panda and ocean. If early Boris did a shit load of meth i think they would've sounded like Bloody Panda

lol song doesn't start for like half of it..

agalloch rules, i'm pissed that i decided not to go to that show. I heard it was awesome and they were burning like incense and candles and shit. The Lodge is one of the coolest songs ever, i believe they found a deer's skull in the woods and hit it with a tree limb to make that clicking sound (but i could def be wrong)

Just checked out a couple of those bands, and it seems to be the kind of ambient black metal (probably don't bother with bloody panda) that i don't really listen to, but the obvious choices for that are:

Negura Bunget

Weakling (a little heavier but a must, most of these bands wouldn't exist without them)
Wolves in the throne Room (two hunters)
Moonsorrow
Enslaved (Mardruam & Monumension are good ambientesque black metal albums although probably a little heavier) FUCK IT get below the lights also if you haven't heard it.
You might be into Warning
Someone would reccomend you Ackercoke but i think they suck

fuck how could i forget HORSEBACK. A combination of ambient doom and ambient black metal shit AND THEY ARE FROM CHAPEL HILL. On relapse records. Its actually the dude who plays in mount moriah's solo project. Wolveserpent is an ambient doom band i just saw and Make is another local band that is awesome. Maybe check out Thrones (joe preston from a ton of doom shit) Playing in greensboro in like 30 days. Harvey Milk (joe played on a couple albums). Burning Witch is probably the most evil doom band of all time. Graves at sea, Hull, Floor, LESBIAN, Cough. IDK dude there is too much doom shit for me to start talking about it.

I wish i could help more but i try to avoid black metal with keyboards other than Emperor... tends too get pretty cheesy pretty fast. If you want more doom stuff thats like 95% of the music that i listen to these days and i'm playing in 3 doom bands right now I fucking love metal and i will talk someone to death about it.
