I thought Kemba was always strong, even as a freshman. Harrow couldn't bench Dakota Fanning.

I thought there were reports about how badly he slacked off in the weight room. Maybe UK will be a good change for him, get out of the spotlight for a year and refocus on himself.

Quote :
"Former Heels explain why they left program
By Tim Hall
Posted at 9:19 a.m.
Three former North Carolina Tar Heels-turned-enemies are coming out and talking about some of the more specific reasons they left Chapel Hill.

The twins, David and Travis Wear bolted shortly after the 2009-10 season concluded. Then Larry Drew's far more surprising (and from Tar Heel fans far more unforgivable) exit came in the middle of the ACC season in February, after the second semester had already begun.

Now the trio of UCLA Bruins can sit around and recount their miserable times in Chapel Hill together. All three told the LA Times that the decision to leave wasn't much about lack of playing time. It was more about fan support, a disconnect with the coaching staff and the "Carolina experience" falling short of expectations:

"The energy just wasn't there as in the years prior, it seemed like," said Travis Wear, a 6-foot-10 forward who averaged 3.5 points in 10.1 minutes a game. "It just wasn't that fun of a year."

David Wear described being in Chapel Hill as a culture shock, saying they both missed the friends and family that supported them all along, and that they couldn't count on the fans for that support. Larry Drew shared those thoughts:

"When you're winning, everything's good. When you're losing, it's opposite. Going to a school like that, I was aware of the potential for how things could be. I wasn't aware to the extent."

And some more bits of information that I'm sure will make you love Larry Drew even more....his recent birthday party rap, which was laced with N-words, F-words and blatant shots at Carolina and Roy Williams was justified by Drew as "venting". He said, "I didn't mean it as a diss or anything like that, it was just something I had to get off my chest."

The other surprising thing was this comment from Larry Drew Sr., Drew's father and an NBA head coach with the Hawks, who apparently felt like he and his son were owed something by the Carolina staff when Kendall Marshall was infused into the starting lineup:

"Nothing was said to Larry, nothing was said to me," Drew Sr. said. "That was a little hard to swallow."

Wow. First of all Roy Williams stands by that the move was discussed openly in front of the team before it happened. Second, I didn't know Larry Drew Sr. had to be consulted about roster moves on the Carolina basketball team.

Former big man Deon Thompson even told the Times that Drew and Roy Williams "bumped heads" at times. "He was just a laid-back kid, so it was hard for Coach Williams to light that fire in him at times."

Is the Drew family going for the title of America's least favorite sports family or something?

These three being 3,000 miles away is probably best for Carolina basketball.

Sweet. DeAndre Daniels committed to UConn and half of the Top 10 for next yea is interested in UConn. Hopefully this persuades Drummond to reclassify for that last scholly, but I doubt it.

Should be good anyway.

wow, so late in the recruiting season - makes you wonder how all that worked out

and if it's not sketchy enough, he ends up at UConn. We'll see if Calhoun returns.

Nate Miles was a sketchy situation as was allowing Marcus Williams to play. No argument here.

You'd have to be really fucking stupid to cheat while on probation and Calhoun is a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them.

Set up well for a run at title 4 in the next 2 years.

aside from Nate Miles and Marcus Williams, UConn has a terrible graduation rate. didn't they just lose some scholarships for poor academics as well?

They had a bad APR, which is deeply flawed as everyone knows. From what I've heard in the past (this may have changed - a lot of schools changed this because of the APR) they didn't allow the players to take abbreviated courses in the Spring even if they turned pro at UConn. They've had a lot players leave early for the draft and not finish out the semester and they got dinged for it.

It's certainly doesn't put them in a good light given the other stuff going on, but the APR is a joke.

Kentucky has 5 guys projected within the first 15 picks next year. This might be Calapari's most stacked team ever. Has any team ever had 5 guys drafted in the first round?

"Arkansas coach Mike Anderson won't let Rotnei Clarke leave.

Clarke, the Razorbacks leading scorer from a year ago and arguably the top shooter in the entire country, has asked for a transfer from the program on two separate occasions.

Oklahoma native Rotnei Clarke averaged 15.2 ppg for the Razorbacks in 2010-11. (Getty Images) Clarke asked for his release shortly after the coaching change that brought Anderson to Arkansas in March. He was told to take some time -- and asked Anderson for his release again this past Monday.
But Anderson and athletic director Jeff Long have not given Clarke his release. Clarke said he has attempted to reach Long over the past few days since Anderson told him in a meeting earlier this week that he would not be let go.

CBSSports.com has also been unsuccessful in attempts to reach Long, Anderson and a member of Anderson's coaching staff seeking comment.

The school's unwillingness to allow Clarke to transfer comes shortly after Anderson enabled senior point guard Jeff Peterson and forward Glenn Bryant to go elsewhere.

"I have spent the last couple of months getting to know Coach Anderson, his staff and his system," Clarke told CBSSports.com. "And I still feel as though it's best for me to finish my career somewhere else."

Clarke is concerned his game may not mesh well with Anderson's up-tempo style.

"I love the school and the fans," Clarke added. "But I just don't feel as though it's the best fit for me basketball-wise -- and it's tough watching guys like Jeff and Glenn be able to go somewhere else, where I'm not able to."

Clarke, according to sources, isn't the only one Anderson hasn't allowed to explore other opportunities.

Two members of Arkansas' highly regarded recruiting class -- which was assembled by former coach John Pelphrey and his coaching staff -- both asked Anderson for their release.

It's basically an unwritten rule that, following a coaching change, recruits are released from their letters-of-intent if they want to play elsewhere.

Maryland signee Sterling Gibbs was released and is headed to Texas, George Washington signee Eric Copes wound up at George Mason -- and even N.C. State sophomore point guard Ryan Harrow was allowed to leave and has transferred to Kentucky.

Clarke, if he does transfer, would sit out this season and have one more year of eligibility.

Clarke, a 6-foot Oklahoma native, averaged 15.2 points as a junior, shot nearly 44 percent from beyond the arc and expanded his overall game. He averaged 21.4 points and shot 52 percent from 3-point range over the final eight games of the season."

"They're here to make sure the coaches stay where they're supposed to stay and the prospects stay where they're supposed to stay, and they do a fine job of it. But here's the issue: They can't quite figure out what to do with William Wesley -- the man more commonly known as "Worldwide Wes" who basically has the run of the place. Wesley is a longtime and well-documented power-broker who is now a certified agent. And even though agents are supposed to be nowhere close to players at an event like this, Wesley has spent the better part of tonight sitting in a chair on the court around Kentucky freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Gilchrist, and within talking and bumping distance of every high school prospect in attendance.

SHADY DEALINGS: AAU coach who committed suicide could shake up college basketball

from SI's article on the Salinas suicide
Quote :
"More than a dozen current and former college coaches -- including Texas Tech's Billy Gillispie, Arizona's Lute Olson, Baylor's Scott Drew and Gonzaga's Mark Few -- are believed to have lost investments most recently valued at over $7.8 million combined with the late Houston-area businessman and AAU basketball operator J. David Salinas, sources close to the matter tell SI.com.

Salinas, who committed suicide on Sunday amid an months-long investigation into his businesses by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, died at age 60 from a gunshot wound at his home in Friendswood, Texas. He was the chairman of the eponymous J. David Financial Group in Friendswood, the founder of the Houston Select AAU basketball program and a Houston, Rice and Wichita State donor.

According to documents reviewed by SI.com, the value of Gillispie's investment alone was purported to be $2.3 million; Olson's, $1.17 million; Drew's, $621,000; Few's, $353,000.

Raising further suspicions is that several coaches who invested with Salinas, who was also known for his lavish Final Four parties, would sign players from Salinas' Houston Select AAU team. Dates of coaches' investments remain unknown. But the paths of Demetri Goodson (Gonzaga, before transferring to Baylor this summer), Henry Dugat (Baylor), Jawan McClellan (Arizona), Alonzo Edwards (Nebraska, later North Texas), Louis Truscott (Nebraska, then Houston), Rodney Williams (Nebraska), Justin Wiggins (Tulsa) and Joseph Jones (Texas A&M) spark potential questions, for example. Other notable Houston Select alumni include Dexter Pittman (Texas), Cartier Martin (Kansas State) and Toure Murray (Wichita State).
On Monday former University of Houston basketball coach Tom Penders told The Daily that Salinas had solicited a $100,000 investment from Penders and "made a strong, strong implication" that it would help him gain access to Houston Select prospects. "He talked about all these coaches that he had investing with him," Penders told The Daily. "I told him because he was an AAU guy, I couldn't possibly get involved in that. I said, 'I think that's kind of a rules violation, or could be.'""
