Reading comprehension. learn it. I said he isn't going to draft jenkins at #9. Way too much risk for a player who isn't light years better than other players available at that spot.

Hogan was a 4th round pick. You can take chances on 4th rounders, doing that in the early first sets your team back when that pick screws up.

at no time did i personally attack your point. it was more of a general point to those who say Richardson would never draft Jenkins, regardless of round. but you're right about a risky first round pick setting the team back. who remembers Rashard Anderson? any real Panthers fan will, but the general NFL fan has no clue who he is. what a waste. so i suppose Jenkins could be Anderson 2.0, but his pedigree is way stronger than Anderson's. no one really knows how he will turn out yet.

^^i'm gonna bang your sister for that one

Stuff = 4 different kids by 3 different women

He's well on his way toward passing Cromartie & Henry

4 kids != 11 or 9 kids

and as long as he didnt roethlisberg the women, thats probably average for NFL players who arent married

Yeh, I'm sure the draft average is 4 kids. For what it's worth, that's more than Cromartie or Henry had when they were drafted, so as I said, he's well on his way to passing them

how many kids does Shockey have? i figured you meant he had 4 now with three different women, which is nothing compared to AC or TH

Haha, I'm talking about Jenkins, not Shockey

Shockey's "baggage" was simply being an outspoken player with tats & likely a soft spot for strip clubs

I thought that was talking about Jenkins' baggage/controversy & was adding what was left out

well i didn't realize in addition to assault and weed charges, Jenkins had a lot of kids...but I figured my post was clearly about Shockey

BUT ANYWAY, we'll see how the draft goes

Quote :
"Carolina Panthers

Why they can't spend money: They spent wildly to keep a 2-14 team together last year.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney spent last summer on a shopping spree unmatched by anyone short of the Eagles, but while Philadelphia went looking for other teams' players, Carolina spent exorbitantly to keep its own in-house. How did it go? Not so well. Although Cam Newton revitalized the offense, virtually all of the veterans Hurney retained failed to live up to expectations. Running back DeAngelo Williams was effective, but only carried the ball 155 times in a rare healthy season. Linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis were given in excess of $80 million in contract extensions but combined to make it through just one regular-season game before going on injured reserve. Defensive end Charles Johnson had nine sacks, but that's a pedestrian figure for a player who got a $72 million contract to stay with the team.

The result of that spending spree was a four-win improvement to 6-10, but Carolina is now up against the cap and Hurney's probably had the corporate card taken away. That won't hurt a lot this year, but mercurial wideout Steve Smith and promising young runner Jonathan Stewart will be free agents after this season, and the Panthers won't be able to go out and add a big weapon for Newton because their money is tied up in the mistakes of 2011.

Carolina's in perpetual search of a tall wideout to play across from Smith, and while they have young prospects in house, they could go out and make a small offer to Braylon Edwards in the hopes that he spent the offseason remembering how to leap over things. Alternately, they could go after the other Steve Smith — the ex-Giants/Eagles wideout — and ruin football writing forever. How would we tell them apart? "The Steve Smith who is terrifying" and "The Steve Smith whose knee is not all there"? That wouldn't be fun."

they need a legitimate #2 WR and a replacement TE for Shockey if he retires.

^^^ I like how that article is so overwhelmingly negative about the Panthers, who had 3 times as many wins as they did the previous year.

But then he fails to mention the results of the counter example he uses (Philadelphia) who I guess he believes were smarter than the Panthers.

[Edited on March 8, 2012 at 2:12 PM. Reason : I also expect Davis to be either restructured or cut]

I'd say the article is pretty spot on

also, he was one of the few before the season started last year to say "look out for the Panthers, they have the potential to be a sneaky good team", so it's not like he's a Panthers hater

his point is that the Panthers were good in spite of their spending spree, not because of it

I agree, article overall seems to keep it factual. A lot of it is negative but, shit, that's because its not all good stuff.

Two Steve Smiths would be some good entertainment though

our offense is fine - just needs more maturity and to stay healthly. Wonder why teams like the Packers and Saints can insert a backup QB, rookies, and marginally talented WRs into their lineup and get results?

their system is mature and they have leaders at many positions (not just talent).

I have no desire for bringing in another WR.

NONE.

ZERO.

NADA.

I am sick and tired of people talking about how we absolutely have to bring in another WR. Its ridiculous. There are such more glaring defensive needs that our money, if any, in free agency should address. Lafell, Gettis, Olsen, are MORE than capable of filling out WR2 & 3 options.

I am really starting to buy into LaFell. Big physical receiver who showed good hands and speed late in the season.

The most important free agent that we sign will be Thomas Davis, when we cut him and restructure his contract, and resign him for cheap. He is going beast mode this year.

so no discussion of Cam Newton and Vernon Davis's wild night of making it rain at a Miami strip club?

the story isn't as intriguing as the headline, but I at least thought it would get a mention.

"The Carolina Panthers have found a way to keep linebacker Thomas Davis.

DavisAlthough he is coming off his third torn ACL, the Panthers want Davis back, and they made it happen by working around salary-cap challenges. A league source told ESPN.com that Davis’ deal has been restructured to free up $3.8 million in salary-cap space.

The Panthers chose not to exercise an $8 million option bonus that was due this week. The bonus was put in as a safeguard when Davis signed a new contract last summer. He suffered his third injury early last season.

Davis’ cap figure for 2012 is now a comfortable $2.1 million. In addition to not getting the bonus, Davis took a cut in base salary from $2.25 million to $700,000 for this season.

But Davis can recoup some of the money later in the contract that runs through 2015. He has a $500,000 option bonus in 2013, and a $2.5 million second option in 2014. His new base salaries rise steadily each season. If he’s still with the team in 2015, his base salary will be $7.25 million."
