Someone please explain this to me. I know if it's not saturated, it's not as bad for you. But eating too much fat in general is always bad for you, right? Like if you put big blobs of sour cream on your lunch and dinner every day, it'd make you fatter, right? I've heard some of these paleo people talk like you can eat as much fat as you want, as long at it isn't processed food, but I'm under the impression that if you eat copious amounts of eggs and mayonaise and sour cream and cheese, you're going to get fat.

no, fat is fine. new studies even indicate that saturated fats aren't as bad as they thought and may not be any wosrse

the rice and other carbs are what you want to avoid, fat is fine

Saturated animal / unprocessed fat is not bad for you if you eat a healthy diet.

The problem with today's "American" diet is people eat A LOT of processed foods (lots of wheat products - sugar etc) AND they eat a bunch of fat. Sugar is much easier to process so your body processes all that first and the fat never gets processed and turns to actual fat.

If you stop eating sugar and processed foods your body turns to processing fat like we're designed to do and all is well.

I don't really do strictly Paleo (no I don't do cross fit ) but I try to avoid processed foods and anything with added sugar. My diet is basically fruits, veggies, nuts, and healthier meats (chicken, salmon, etc). I don't really do rice and beans because rice is mostly empty calories and there's a lot of evidence beans aren't the best for your digestive system. Basically there's no benefit to eating beans INSTEAD of veggies so just eat veggies.

When I went on a strict diet of no processed foods or added sugar and made fat a larger part of my diet (animal fat, coconut oil, olive oil, etc) then I immediately lost weight and my cholesterol went down (high cholesterol runs in my family). Essentially eating more fat lowered my cholesterol by a good bit and I'm in pretty good shape.

So to answer your questions as long as you're not eating a bunch of processed foods and sugar then naturally occurring animal and plant fats are very good for you.

I mean shit I basically went on a diet of chicken, pork chops, uncured bacon, and veggies for a while and I immediately lost weight and felt WAAAY better. Try not eating anything processed for a month and see how much better you feel. It was like night and day to me.

^Exactly. Although "carbs" get a bad rap. I eat plenty of healthy carbs. Bananas, all types of squashes, fruit, etc. I do a good bit of cardio (biking, hiking, skiing) and I still need plenty of carbs for energy stores. I just eat spaghetti squash and almond flour meatballs. It's so delicious.

"good" carbs are those with plenty of fiber and ideally some protein, but you still need to watch how much you eat.

really if you pay attention to nothing except carbs you will feel better and be healthier almost immediately

(spaghetti squash instead of pasta noodles, steamed zuchini instead of flat pasta, cauliflower instead of rice, etc...)

is the fat they use for cooking their meat, beans, veggies, and in guacamole advertised? cuz if that's corn oil, soya oil, or other similar oils, that's not good.

I don't eat the burritos though. Most places now use canola oil for cooking which is healthier than vegetable oils but still not as healthy as something like coconut oil. I get coconut oil in bulk at Costco for cooking. It's awesome.

You can use coconut oil instead of cream cheese but the cream cheese makes it so tasty. So much better than potatoes.

any restaurant that uses healthy fats for cooking would prominently display that fact inside and advertise the hell out of it, because that would set them apart from 99.99% of places.

if a place doesn't advertise that it uses healthy fats for cooking, you can bet your life they use cheap commercially available unhealthy fats, the kind that come in 50 pound plastic containers.

corn oil
soya oil
palm oil
cottonseed oil
sunflower oil
shortening
hydrogenated oils

etc.

If your healthy food is gross you're making it wrong.

Sure it's harder to make than unhealthy food but once you figure out how to make the perfect steamed broccoli, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, or perfectly browned and seasoned brussel sprouts you'll be in heaven.

Another great thing about cutting back on sugars and processed foods if your taste buds come back. To me cake, candy, most things sweet are just nasty now. They're way too sweat. Fruits and naturally occurring sweet things taste so much better now. It's like I ruined my taste buds for years eating all this processed sugar. Now I'm actually tasting fruit for the first time.

i've never been a big fan of sweets. i usually eat pretty healthy, although i eat a lot of bread (but i'm not close to fat). but i was on the road yesterday and ate Bojangles.

^^ "Bad" might not be the best word since fruits tend to have a lot of benefits that go beyond fat, however most fruits tend to be high in sugars such as sucralose that are quickly converted into glucose in the blood stream. The ready availability of these sugars to the body means spikes in blood sugar.

Compared to something like beans which tend to be low on the glycemic index you will see a much more notable spike in blood sugar after eating an equivalent amount of energy from fruit. That blood sugar, if not used, gets converted to fat. The spikes caused by sugar and subsequent dips caused by insulin release can also lead to food cravings which can sabotage a diet and other issues (insulin resistance, diabetes, etc.)

In other words, it's probably unwise to eat massive amounts of them in one sitting if you're dieting.

Actually, a lot of fruits have a medium or medium low GI value, lower than bread and potatoes.

Still, it is always best to eat food together that complement each other in terms of macros.

Eat fruits with nuts or with some other snack which has protein and fat, to slow down digestion.

the glycemic response to fruits varies so much that you can't really talk about fruits in the collective. some fruits have high fiber and are low GI and some you might as well be eating pixi sticks. talking about them collectively doesn't make sense, but if i had to i would say they are better than bread.

in moderation fruit is healthy, the problem is that some people don't understand what moderation is or what serving sizes are for fruit. A giant bowl of pineapple and melon is not healthy.

It always depends what you're doing physically. If I'm on a long hike I'm going to eat a few apples or a mango instead of some beef jerky. It's instant energy that your body can quickly process. If you're sitting on the couch not doing anything then a bunch of fruit isn't the best.

I highly doubt this. Most vegans I know eat a lot of processed foods like bread, pasta, white rice, etc. My cousin is vegan and she eats a bunch of tofu, pasta, and bread. All very processed. I mean tofu is like the definition of processed food. It may be healthier than other processed foods but it's still processed.

If you're a true vegan and don't eat any processed foods you're basically eating fruits, veggies, nuts, and beans. It would be very very hard to gain any muscle or fat on that diet unless you're eating a shit ton of veggie protein powder or something.

Bread and pasta are still processed foods. Maybe not as much as a candy bar but it still spikes your blood sugar. Whole wheat bread has a GI of 71. Anything over 70 is considered a high glycemic food.

A snickers bar has a GI of 55.

That doesn't mean a snickers bar is healthier than whole wheat bread but they're both bad for different reasons.

Potatoes are the only thing on there with a high GI. I don't know why potatoes are under healthy foods though. Not the greatest thing to eat.

Most fruits are low with some having a medium GI.

Basically the more a food is processed and broken down the higher the GI and the more it spikes your blood sugar. Why high sugar fruits don't have a high GI. Your body still has to break down an apple.

No one who wants to eat healthy sits and eats a potato on its own. If you have a baked potato, it is will be with cheese, cream, beans, etc. The GI of that meal will be low to medium. Or, you have it as a side dish with meat or fish or chicken.

It is important to consider the GI of foods, but what is more important is the glycemic load (GL) of the meal as a whole.

Potatoes should be eaten with skins. They provide fiber, and some vitamins and minerals. Just don't have a one pound potato with your steak, and you are good.

BTW, did you know that how foods are cooked also affect their GI? Makes sense because different methods of cooking break down foods in different ways. There are significant differences between the GI of a baked potato, mashed potato, boiled potato, microwaved potato, cut into cubes and cooked as part of a stew, etc.

Some of you TWW users are so parochial that it is very sad. Take off your horse-blinders, believe it or not, there *are* other people and cultures around the world other than Americans.

To answer your question, many people eat baked potatoes with beans. British folk eat baked potatoes with baked beans (the beans in the nasty sugar-sauce). Kumpir is a popular street food in Turkey, basicaly baked potato and you choose your fillings and they pile them on and then mixlmash it all up for you within the skin. The cart holds many toppings, and I have seen chick peas and kidney beans when I was there.

And why is potato and beans so weird anyway? I didn't say potato and chocolate.

when I worked at the hospital, I used to cover my baked potato in their chili (which had beans).

It was delicious, but I agree, it wouldn't be my first choice now (you didn't get charged extra for putting chili on food, and a baked potato was only $1 with the employee discount).

Agreed. Their hypocrisy lies in the fact that they are the epitome of the "it's good for you because it's natural" trend, yet you can't eat much of anything there under 1,000 calories.

Chipotle and Panera are the absolute worst.

But also the fact that something is high in calories doesn't always mean it's unhealthy. Most people obviously can't eat 1,000+ calorie meals all the time and expect to see no ill effects, but that doesn't mean that the food itself is unhealthy. (speaking more generally on the issue of calories, not on Chipotle in particular)

It's not as much about the food as it is about the marketing. When Hardee's advertised their bacon burgers years ago, they were pretty much saying that their meals were unhealthy crap. But Chipotle advertises as a healthy option, despite the fact that you would have to make major modifications to their advertised foods for it to be a sensible meal option.

In my eyes it's the equivalent of saying that a packaged food item, marketed itself as a single-serving portion, breaks up the nutrition facts into multiple servings. It's misleading and utter bullshit.

^^ By that measure the salad bar at any restaurant is unhealthy because you can't stop yourself from building a 2 lb stack of cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, and ranch dressing. Take some responsibility for your own choices. They offer you decent quality healthy ingredients to build from. That's something I can't say for most other "fast food" restaurants.

I love that being anti-GMO gets you nazi status on the internet though. That's rich.
