Are cops not trained to take down someone yielding a knife? Sure knives are dangerous but seems overkill to use lethal force over a knife? Or maybe the cops just don't like the LGBT community there.

I guess it depends what you are doing with the knife. If you are just standing around threatening people then they should be able to try to reason with the person. If the person has a hostage or starts running after someone with a knife then the cops job is to protect those people. If that means shooting someone wielding a knife then so be it.

The people need to demand the removal of the judge. Its one thing for an angry police officer to make a conscious decision to kill a man in the heat of the moment because he is being disrespected.

But its an entirely different level of racism when a judge sits down and looks at all of the evidence for several months and then decides that a life doesn't matter.

it was on a college campus and was an obvious suicide by cop attempt. cops, especially campus police, need to be better trained to deal with it. there are other places in the world where cops can deal with these situations without shooting the subject but here cops shoot people suffering from mental illness frequently. less-lethal weapons are rightfully criticized for being used as compliance devices, but they are good as a last resort in these kinds of situations.

it's not too much to want our police to be better trained on conflict deescalation and how to recognize and respond to people suffering from mental illnesses

the cop had backup, there were no other students around, the victim was walking slowly... the cops had other options than shooting the guy

just because the cops may have been legally justified doesn't mean that we shouldn't want more from the cops
