Haha, all my years of watching that show, never realizing it could be fixed - I just assumed that they always tweaked options on cars, vacations, etc to keep it different. And I didn't realize their budget was so tight that it would be a big deal to actually have people win everything.

this is one of my all-time favorite books (and is also among the Modern Library's 100 Greatest Nonfiction Books of 20th Century).

her style isn't for everyone, but I find it to be sublime.

I have been reading the Pax Britannica trilogy by Jan (nee James) Morris. It's nonfiction, covering the rise, peak, and decline of the British empire.

Her style really appeals to me. It's certainly well-researched and informative, and generally pretty formal, but the author is not entirely aloof from it and his/her opinion (and sense of humor) make occasional and frank appearances.

Let me interject here that the pronoun confusion stems from the fact that James Morris transitioned into Jan Morris in the 1970s, as the books were being written, and I'm unclear on the etiquette of how to refer to a trans person pre-transition, particularly when all of my copies of the book say "James Morris" on them. And I'll further say that I'd love to read her memoirs, because her life story is fascinating. Military service in WWII and after, then a reporter who got the scoop on Hilary and Tenzing reaching the top of Everest. Later discovered and publicized evidence of French collaboration with Israel during the Suez crisis. Then a celebrated author and family man who decided that all things considered he'd rather be a family woman, the medical procedures towards which effect he was not permitted to get in the UK, forcing him to go to - of all places - Morocco. She's still alive at 90. But I digress.

I've got a pretty good grasp on history but these books have filled me in on a lot of aspects of the imperial world that were universally known in their day but are now forgotten. Morris does an excellent job of painting a mental image of far-flung places and fleshing out interesting characters.

^^^ How many of those has he churned out? I'm not trying to start another series that's supposed to be a dozen books with only 3 or 4 done. Learned my lesson with Martin, Jordan, and (to a lesser degree) Rothfuss.

he put out the third book in the series "Oathbringer" at the end of last year. The previous book came out in March of 2014, and the first came out in August of 2010. So he's on a pace of about one book every 3.5 years.

The good thing about Sanderson is that he is young, writes like crazy and develops almost all of his books to be within the "Cosmere" universe. So even if you get through the first 3 books of the Stormlight Archive there are a ton of other great reads that he has put out (the Mistborn series is another good one).

I wouldn't compare Sanderson to GRRM at all. Dude is a writing machine

I would not compare them because one is a garbage writer who pumps out find and replace neckbeard trash (go for it if you are into fantasy version of romance novel quality writing), and the other has writing talent.

“The Clock Is Ticking”: Inside the Worst U.S. Maritime Disaster in Decades

Quote :
"In the darkness before dawn on Thursday, October 1, 2015, an American merchant captain named Michael Davidson sailed a 790-foot U.S.-flagged cargo ship, El Faro, into the eye wall of a Category 3 hurricane on the exposed windward side of the Bahama Islands....Neither his remains nor those of his shipmates were ever recovered. Disasters at sea do not get the public attention that aviation accidents do, in part because the sea swallows the evidence. It has been reported that a major merchant ship goes down somewhere in the world every two or three days; most are ships sailing under flags of convenience, with underpaid crews and poor safety records. The El Faro tragedy attracted immediate attention for several reasons. El Faro was a U.S.-flagged ship with a respected captain—and it should have been able to avoid the hurricane. Why didn’t it? Add to that mystery this simple fact: the sinking of El Faro was the worst U.S. maritime disaster in three decades."

Brandon Sanderson's books have been an amazing find for me. Read the Stormlight Archive first and then moved on to and recently finished the Mistborn Era 1 and 2 books. Not as in depth as SA but still very well written and if you are like me and appreciate the cosmere, the Mistborn books are a must read.

I just finished the Three Body Problem trilogy. I almost gave up half way through the first book, but by the end I motored through the remaining 2 books. I would recommend if you like science fiction.

Definitely, like I said I almost gave up on the first book but then paid money for the next 2 (I got the first one free through the library). The writer's style is not great for character development, but the next 2 books are interesting because of his world building for how society reacts to the threat to the earth.

This is a really good book:

Educated: A Memoir
by Tara Westover
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35133922-educated
Quote :
"Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag". In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard.

Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent.

Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty and of the grief that comes with severing the closest of ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one's life through new eyes and the will to change it."

Really love Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series. I started reading those probably ten years ago and it spurred an interest in sailing ships and naval combat from that time as I had never really been exposed to that.

My current favorite read it The Expanse series. I have not watched the shows but started reading the series due to recommendations from my friends. Started them right at the start of the year and already in book 5. Good stuff!
