Great device...but I am a little biased

"I mean you've got WiFi hotspot tethering available in the Settings menu right out of the box"

That's part of ICS [assuming the carrier doesn't strip it out], not a Jelly Bean feature.

Similarly I hope to stick with Nexus devices from here on out. It's like having a retail version of Windows versus an OEM Windows install filled with bloatware.

anybody recommend a case for the GSM GNex? I've dropped it a couple of times (good thing on carpetted areas so far) because its a bit clunky to handle. I understand its not the same size as the LTE GNex because of the extended battery?

I have an LTE and I have this:
http://www.amazon.com/Diztronic-Flexible-Protector-SCH-i515-Packaging/dp/B0065PGWQ0

Works on regular & extended battery, I don't see why the case wouldn't work on GSM too. The extended battery isn't any different between the two.

I actually just caught up with this thread and I'll throw my vote in for the GNex. I followed the rumors, watched the keynote, blasted my friends on VZW and still bought it on contract well into its lifecycle when it finally arrived at Sprint. Mainly because of the $40.00 Gwallet promo and a 75.00 service credit that was expiring the day after preorders.

By then I had already sold my Evo3D and bought a Nexus S for like 70 bucks on eBay to try out ICS and NFC Tags. I'm all for the Google Experience, but the toroplus hasn't been supported in AOSP since day one and it probably never will be. If I wanted JB asap I have to resort to kangs/ports just as if I had bought whatever non-developer device the community had jumped on that year. eg. OG Evo4G, GS III.

A bunch of rambling and superfluous information there, but if you truly want a developer device don't expect one from a CDMA carrier.

There are two different versions of the GNex, with different dimensions, I learned this the hard way when buying some batteries off ebay.

why, again? because i've yet to find see a phone that doesn't have SOME ROM available that removes the bloat and operates better (more energy efficient, faster, etc) than stock (including the nexus line)

i'd never ignore a good phone simply because it was "carrier-flavored"

Anyone using the Google Wallet prepaid card?

Quote :
"Thank you for being one of the first users of the Google Wallet app and for activating your Google Prepaid Card. Since we recently launched the ability to use any debit or credit card in Google Wallet, we are going to discontinue the Google Prepaid Card soon.

Spend your Google Prepaid Card balance

To check if you have any funds remaining on your card, navigate to the Payment cards section of the Google Wallet app and tap your Google Prepaid Card.
You don’t have to spend the exact amount of your balance — at most merchants, you can cover the remainder of a purchase with any other payment method.

Important dates affecting your Google Prepaid Card
- September 17, 2012: You will no longer be able to add funds to your Google Prepaid Card or add a new Google Prepaid Card to a new device. Please be aware that resetting the Google Wallet app after this date will remove the Google Prepaid Card and you will not be able to re-add the card. Find out more at http://www.google.com/wallet/prepaid-refund/faq.html

- October 17, 2012: Your Google Prepaid Card will disappear from the Google Wallet app and you won’t be able to spend your balance any longer. Don’t worry, you will be able to request a refund if you have remaining funds by visiting http://www.google.com/wallet/prepaid-refund.
Your Google Prepaid Card has new terms and conditions

Previously, you were charged a $2.00 monthly maintenance fee after 180 days without any transactions. Now, you will be charged this fee after 30 days without any transactions. This fee is automatically deducted from your Google Prepaid Card balance. However, you won’t be charged any fees as long as you spend your balance before October 17, 2012. You can view the new terms and conditions here."

What the fuck is this garbage. Why should they charge a maintainence fee for not allowing you to use the card.

^ i threw it on the bolt sunday night when the thread was made...it's sooooooooooo much better than the leak...zippy, great battery life, less than 100MB

in other news, the acer iconia A500 arrived today and i just played around with it at lunch long enough to get the ICS OTA update...and so begins my questions:

1.) is there any good reason to root an android tablet? debloating, maybe, and access to titanium/nandroid backups, but anything else?
2.) are there any "must have" android tablet apps?
3.) recommendations for a note-taking app? handwriting-to-text would be great, but not necessary
4.) related to the question above, how bad are these capacitive screens for writing? i haven't picked up a stylus, yet, but the capacitive tips are so big that i imagine it's like writing with a jumbo marker or something

I went with the dynaflow liquid armor for my gnex and it works pretty well. I got a pretty sweet battery from a company called hyperion. $18 shipped for 3850mAh. I get 5 days of battery life.

pro tip - on the nexus or a rom stripped of carrier spyware, uninstall the facebook app and just create a shortcut to the bookmark on the homepage. 95% of the functionality (no notifications) but 25% of the memory and it saves a ton of battery since it's not spying on you all the time.

i thought that the DRM had "gorilla glass" or some such thing

not that that means it's not breakable/crackable/scratchable, i just assumed they you'd really have to hit it in the right with with a significant force to do damage...how'd you crack it?

i only ask because i hold out hope that the next phone i have will be virtually indestructible

^^^dropped it on some gravel and I'm guessing it landed right on the point of a rock such that only that small area received the entire blow. Then later that night I dropped it on a tile floor and it landed on one of the phone's corners and it cracked even more.

I've dropped this thing hundreds of times and nothing happened to it, not even a scratch. I do believe this glass is tough, but a 5' drop onto a small point is probably too much for it

And they appear only to be surface cracks. No discoloration, no malfunctioning, etc. (I can press as hard as I can on the cracks and there is no movement/wokiness on the screen).

Battery life is my biggest concern. I'll pick up a couple extra batteries. Any good batteries you recommend? Or OEM ones are fine?

Anyone tried the Mugen 2300mAh?

http://www.mugen-power-batteries.com/mugen-power-2300mah-extended-battery-for-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-i9300-atandt-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-1747.html#

Eh guess the actual Samsung one is 2100mAh.

Think i'm going to pick up an S3. Have 30 days to return it.

I cracked the screen on my atrix a few months back. Took several falls in the past, but eventually took one last fall. ~3 1/2-4 feet drop from my bathroom sink onto the tile.

What's best brightness control app for the SG3? The default automatic brightness settings is horrible. It sets it close to zero when inside.

I'm trying Lux and it seems to work great.

Seriously.

You need that as much as you need a 350 turbo diesel 4x4 pickup truck to drive to school.

I don't know if a 5" screen is too big, but you really can't go much bigger than that without it basically being a tablet

to be fair, it's not ACTUALLY 5 inches...sure, it's 4.8" and that's CLOSE, but it's not the same thing (and when we're comparing numbers this small and on the diagonal, it matters)

that said, i also think it's too big...my thunderbolt's screen is 4.3" and i love it...whenever i see one of the smaller screens (like the 3.5" on the iphone 4), it looks and feels virtually unusable, but i don't know that i want anything bigger than what i've got

though, really, it's less than a 12% increase, so maybe it wouldn't be TOO bad...coming from one of those tiny, dinky screens, though, it's more than a 37% increase

just silly things but since last post, i got it working through a lot more effort than my last phone.

i would get a crash (com.android.phone has stopped working) when i tried to change from my carrier to google voice. i tried to trick it by going to main site and deactivating and reactivating, no dice. the closest i got was my phone would do the ~24 seconds of ringing, followed by a rustling clicking sound, then more ringing so it was call forwarding like whoa. the vm recording was the google one, but it 1) read out my google voice number and not my personal recording and 2) showed up nowhere.

google results are a hodgepodge of "this is what i did" blah blah blah so i just ran the the steps in somewhat different orders. good to go
