It was just confirmed today that we will be having a midnight showing of HP:GOF at the IMAX on the morning of November 18. Tickets will go on sale to Exploris members on Friday, October 28th and to the general public on Wednesday, November 2nd.

This is unrelated to this film but we are also bringing back The Polar Express 3D this December.

More information about both of these films, including showtimes, will be on our website in the near future.

I heard a rumor that there'll be a midnight show of Harry Potter at the imax, but will they do one of the polar express?

^I thought that too, but read this on a site

Quote :
"We can now independently confirm that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire clocks in at 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 25 seconds - or just over 143 minutes. And if you tack on the credits, which are filled with bits of humor, then it's exactly thirteen minutes longer. Although this length is shorter than previously rumored, I sincerely hope that it doesn't disappoint any of you, because I can guarantee that the film won't."

If they stayed 60% true to the book, it'd be about 4 hours long. Edit City!

Just so everyone knows the midnight showing on opening day at the IMAX is sold out, as well as the 7:30pm and 10:15pm shows. We still have a few left for the 2pm and 4:45pm shows on Friday, Nov 18 and all shows on Saturday but they will probably sell out in the next few days.

I think a promotion at Loews theatre lets you get into a screening on Wednesday if you use an American Express card. Then again there are no Loews down in NC.

Will the IMAX version be presented in OAR of 2.35:1 or will it be cropped to fit the IMAX screen?

Also, with such a long book, why did they feel they needed to shoot for 2.5 hours? Theres plenty of 3 hour movies that have been very sucessful (Lord of the Rings), so why not include some of those "unimportant subplots"...its not like this is a film on a budget.

Perhaps they shortened it because of viewer attention span? Since this is aimed at kids/teens a lot more than LOTR, I can see why they shortened it.

I don't agree with it though :/

^^ The same kids/teens that read a 734 page book? Yes, obviously their attention span is very short .

The IMAX version will be the same ratio as regular theatres. When we show movies like this there are just blank spots at the top and bottom.

And for those of you stupid enough to ask (and I have been asked this before), no, we can not do anything to make the image fill the screen. Even if we could everyone would just look like coneheads.

I'm kinda split on my opinion on the shortening they did for this movie. On one hand as a fan of the book I'm upset that they left out certain plot lines I think are important (no Dursleys so no chance to see the twins prank with the Ton-Tongue Toffee, no Winky, no S.P.E.W). On the other hand as a projectionist I'm REALLY glad it isn't longer because our equipment has a limit of 2 hours 30 minutes, and this movie exceeds that limit by 3 minutes 44 seconds I think. We can show longer movies but it requires a lot more work on our part and there is a greater chance of something going wrong when it changes 'reels' (actually called platters in IMAX) at the halfway point.

Episode 2 and at least one other film I can't remember were recut in the IMAX ratio. I assumed that was the case for all films that were given IMAX releases.

I think the other one was Apollo 13. Back when they first started converting Hollywood films into IMAX format they thought that changing the aspect ratio from 35mm to IMAX would be better, but after all the flak they got from fans after trimming Star Wars the industry has started coming up with other ways to deal with the differences between IMAX and 35mm, such as filming the movie with IMAX ratio film and trimming the top and bottom off to fit 35mm screens. This is also helpful in that IMAX is about the same aspect ratio as the common TV so it makes 'fullscreen' versions of the DVDs actually better than 'widescreen'. I'm not sure if any studios are doing this yet since I don't enjoy watching movies that we have shown hundreds of times at work.

I've got tickets to the Imax showing on Friday! My boyfriend and I are going, and my Dad is driving in from Greensboro to go with us. I know, I know... it sounds weird to have my Dad drive in for the movie... but it's been a tradition to go with him for the first showing of the Harry Potter movies every year! I'm so excited.
