Google's OpenSocial API/application framework is coming to every major social networking site except Facebook. this is a big deal for web developers - write once, run anywhere (except facebook..... for now) http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/

i read in one of those articles (can't find it now) that all other social networks combined are still a fraction of facebook, which is still a fraction (albeit a large, and growing, fraction) of myspace. at least in the US - apparently (Google's) Orkut is like myspace in Brazil. Somehow, the pageviews from Orkut in brazil alone are more than all the Search pageviews Google serves. .... or maybe Orkut in Brazil is 2nd to Google Search pageview. 11/2/2007 3:43:36 PM |

Far as slow IMAP performance ... imagine if you will the sheer numbers of people currently downloading their entire Gmail account through IMAP ... that's why it's so slow right now
Once everyone's done making local copies, it should be a good bit zippier.
But I honestly don't care, I'm just happy to have it! 11/2/2007 11:40:14 PM |

yes, google does in fact own your ass. here is their new Privacy Policy http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2007-10-31-n24.html
Quote : | "“Here at Google, we take our user’s privacy very seriously. In fact, we’re not even allowing ourselves to joke about this topic – yes, it’s that serious. To give you an idea, here is some of the data we don’t pass on to anyone outside our 10,000+ employee company (provided there’s no subpoena making us pass it on, and provided there’s nothing we define as “imminent harm“; and even if we pass something on, we make sure third parties have privacy policies like ours):
- Your registration confirmation containing the information on sites you signed up for, and the password you’ve chosen. It is safe with us in Gmail. - Your web search history containing your dreams and wishes, and the one time you googled your ex – these are all protected by us. - The Google Toolbar URL data transmitted to us in case you enabled PageRank checking. We keep this very safe at Google. - The love messages you sent via Google Talk in June using the off-the-record option. Googlers won’t tell a thing! - The sites you clicked on in Google results, especially those sites (you know what we mean). Quiet like a fish. - Your private information which you provided to social network Orkut. It’s completely safe with Google. - The kind of sites you visit which contain AdSense or (soon) DoubleClick ads. We value your privacy with this data. - The things you bought using Google Checkout, including that strange DVD from March 14th, 3:30pm. Our employee’s lips are sealed on that one, and your credit card number is safe with Checkout. - The content of the confidential company memo you saved in Google Docs, the one about the new direction your company wants to take. Trust us, it’s our secret too now. - The Hotmail email you send to someone who has a Gmail account. We don’t let others read those! - Your Google Spreadsheet with your income and taxes since 1999. Our employees won’t share with anyone! - Your Google Presentation containing those hush-hush product releases for next year. No kiss and tell. - The one time you researched bomb building on Google Groups. We turn a blind eye on that one, perhaps you researched for a friend. - Your embarrassing party pics of your private Picasa album titled “spring_break”. We understand what it could mean to your future employer, so no word on it from us. - The content of your Blogspot blog in which you go through great efforts to post anonymously, as the diary-style is quite telling. No sir, no one will find out. - That email you were typing but then canceled, which we had transmitted to our server thanks to Gmail’s Ajax auto-saving. We know you didn’t want that to share, so we won’t either! - Every single sentence you translated in the Google Translator. Every single one is safe with us. - The sites you visited while installing the Google Web Accelerator proxy. We don’t want to share them, really. - Those random notes you’ve been collecting at our Google Notebook service. Like Fort Knox. - The one time you searched for “Falun Gong” on Google.cn. Our support person responding to the Chinese government knows that might have just been an accident. - The restaurant you looked up in Google Maps last night, and the calendar entry you then added, and the subsequent mail you wrote to Susan. Shhh.... - The Google Page Creator draft of your new homepage which you then decided to trash fearing your neighbor would object to your political views. Secret, we promise!
As you can see – and we don’t think we need to offer additional proof for this other than our word, like the time we said we “don’t do evil” and then never did evil – all your data is safe with us and our employees. Again, except for those subpoeanas (and assuming we will not be hacked, and that no service exploits will be found), but to quote from our PDF on the subject of log retention which we linked from our blog ...
How many subpoenas for server log data does Google receive each year?
As a matter of policy, we don’t provide specifics on law enforcement requests to Google.
... you can see we don’t even share info on what we’re sharing – we’re that privacy aware! In fact, we urge you to increase your trust with us if there’s still a doubt lingering with you. Because, in the words of our chief executive officer Eric Schmidt this year:
We are very early in the total information we have within Google.
And:
We cannot even answer the most basic questions because we don’t know enough about you. That is the most important aspect of Google’s expansion.
Please visit our new Google Privacy Channel at YouTube to find out more. We won’t tell anyone which videos you watched. Unless they’re really funny ones. (Kidding!!!)”" |

hmm, yeah. seeing a trend here. instead of creating another new social networking site, google came out with OpenSocial last week - a unified programming platform for any social network that wants to join.
now, instead of coming out with "the gPhone", they're just introducing a unified programming platform for any phone maker that wants to join. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/05/piper_jaffray_on_googles_android_apple_and_the_iphone.html 11/5/2007 4:40:56 PM |

in the future, if you decide to buy a phone that supports the Android platform, you could theoretically have access to a lot more (and presumably better) applications than you ever have in the past, where you were limited to applications written specifically for 1) your carrier, 2) your phone, 3) your phone's OS, or 4) a combination of all those
so..... nothing tangible at the moment. but maybe something else. sometime. 11/5/2007 5:31:43 PM |

nice, i just now got the "Gmail 2.0" rollout. definitely faster. much more responsive. opening messages and moving around is almost instantaneous. also, mailboxes, labels, and searches are now linkable with a new URL structure.
i would still like to see features like Ctrl/Shift-Select for multiple selections, drag-and-drop messages, and a tabbed interface for working on multiple messages. 11/8/2007 8:00:31 AM |

wal-marts going to sell a computer with "gOS" on it; ubuntu installed thats oriented towards google's online apps.
Its not done by google and not exactly an operating system....but its a step in that direction. I don't see why google would go with a full out operating system installed with all these apps when they can just have you use their online ones.
google will probably buy the company that developed the software. 11/8/2007 9:34:10 AM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
the wal-mart "gOS" box has nothing to do with google. gOS technically stands for Green OS, and is just another flavor of Linux.
Quote : | " Although the company claims in a FAQ that it was “created as a conceptual Google PC with a conceptual Google OS,” Paul Kim, Everex’s director of marketing, in a discussion with DesktopLinux clarified that “popular applications such as those from Google are an integral part of our product, however, gOS is an entity entirely independent from Google. Furthermore, while we make use of many applications from Google, ‘Google Apps’ is not bundled with this particular system.”
“There has been a latent demand for a consumer-friendly Linux operating system, generating countless inquires from customers seeking an alternative PC experience,” said John Lin, general manager of Everex. “The vision behind gPC was to provide mainstream users with all their favorite applications wrapped in a no-compromise, low-cost, consumer-friendly product. We’re simply giving the people what they want. Everex enlisted the collective intelligence of users throughout the world. Customers love Google products, so we added them. Hackers want administrative privileges, so we provided it. The ultimate potential of a mainstream, open-source PC is tremendous.”" |
http://tinyurl.com/29qebb http://www.somebits.com/weblog/culture/blogs/techcrunch-blows-gPC-story.html http://www.thinkgos.com/
there's endless speculation of if/when/why Google would create an OS, and what form it would take. But even for a company the size of Google, you can't say "why don't they just write an OS?" 1) Modern OS's are huge and complex, and not something you can throw 1000 code monkeys at and expect to end up with a usable product, and 2) there are huge hurdles as to distribution channels and how and why they would want to do this. As it stands, Google is doing just fine letting MS and Apple do the heavy lifting of creating and maintaining OS's, and Google is just a good value-add to those products. What would make the most sense for Google would be a new browser, which is highly more likely than an OS, especially considering they've poached some very high-ups from Firefox and Mozilla. A gBrowser would fit well with their webapp focus and they could integrate the browser more closely into the desktop via MS and Apple APIs and integrate their products more closely into the browser.11/8/2007 11:04:21 AM |

along with the "gmail 2.0" backend rewrite, Google created an official Gmail Greasemonkey API. This is really cool of them, and basically "gives permission" to Greasemonkey developers to add onto Gmail. There was some speculation earlier that Google was disabling Gmail accounts that had GM scripts, but that should not be the case any more. http://code.google.com/p/gmail-greasemonkey/wiki/GmailGreasemonkey10API 11/11/2007 5:38:07 PM |

Ever thought: Hey Google Maps didn't mark my house/etc in the proper location? Now you can fix it!!
http://maps.google.com/help/maps/edit/promo.html
Just search for your address, click "Edit," click "Move Marker," and drag the marker to your front door. Of course, you need to be logged in to a Google account. But, wait, there's more!! Not only can you update your address, but you can fix any location you want to. However, if you move the marker more than 200 meters it gets moderated for absurdity before the changes post.
Any change under 200 meters from the original location is updated immediately, it's true, I fixed my house address 11/20/2007 1:39:03 AM |
