Not time to get too excited, but still...

"Serenity 2 A New Hope?
Date : October 4, 2007 Writer : Clint Morris

I love “Firefly” – so much so every time I’d see it I’d squeeze its cheeks, bring it in closer and share saliva with it. It’s a show that had the danglers to say “screw you! We’re not going anywhere!” despite the fact the network yanked it after 12 episodes. And then, just when it looked like it was done, it remerged as a full-length mother-hoppin’ movie – and by golly if it didn’t bring a lump to George Lucas’s throat.

When Alan Tudyk told me on the phone this morning that a sequel to “Serenity” – that’s the name of the “Firefly” movie for those who’ve been up at Guantanamo Bay for the past couple of years – could be happening I just about dropped the phone (I didn’t though, because the last time I did that it landed in the loo. Fried itself. And as a consequence, I lost all my numbers.) Tudyk says the newly-released “Serenity : Special Edition“ DVD has been selling so hot, that there’s talk in doing another movie.

“They had to put [the new DVD] out because they’ve been selling out of the other one and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’. And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie”.

Tudyk agrees that even if it was a direct-to-DVD movie, it’d still be worthwhile. Especially since the whole DVD sequel is a big trend.

“It really is”, says Tudyk. “Everybody in the Firefly crew – and that includes the ones who died in the movie – are excited about the prospect of doing another”.

Nathan Fillion, says Tudyk, is especially keen. “We were out a couple of weeks ago together at a party and there was a bunch of people there, and he was like ‘Oh, look we’re Browncoats”.

Great to hear Fillion’s still as crazy as ever about wearing the Tightpants again.

Tudyk says he heard from creator Joss Whedon a few weeks back – but mainly about Tudyk’s role in the new Western “3:10 to Yuma”. “He sent me an email when it first came out because at first he thought I was a different character – by the trailer”, he laughs. “He was like ‘My god! You’re playing such a bad-ass!’ That was Ben Foster, who is such a bad-ass in that movie, and is just brilliant, just brilliant, and we both have a similar look – we both have polish genes – and anyway, Joss writes back ‘Sorry, I didn’t realise you were the sympathetic funny character – how would cast you as that?’. Joss, that would be you!”.

The actor, who appears in the new Frank Oz film “Death at a Funeral”, is absolutely blown-away by the life “Firefly” has had. He’s even headed downunder next week to appear at a science fiction convention. It amazes him even more that he got to do a feature film version of his 12-episode series. “That’s wild; you don’t see that happen until years later when it becomes a campy spoof of the thing. But even then, shows like Dukes of Hazzard and Starsky and Hutch were huge hits [from the beginning, and they didn’t do movies straight away] this was something that was a hit only with a group of people and it just grew.”

Likely to happen before a “Serenity” sequel though is an “I, Robot” sequel. Tudyk visited the set of Will Smith’s latest movie “I am Legend” to talk about the movie recently, and says he’d be super excited to play Sonny the robot again.

Yep, but what about Wash? Now that there’s the shizzle. "

Unless they do a bunch of flashbacks I don't see how they would work in Book and Wash without some thing completely absurd.

This is going to sound really gay but I'd much rather Joss make a Buffy/Angel movie before doing Serenity 2.

Well there is already a Buffy movie... I'm not a fan of the series so I don't know how well received it is, but I would think that since the show was originally based off the movie, fans of the show don't get too angry at it.

they said the DVD sales from the special edition DVD is what's making the sequel possible.

I'm going to have to go against Shrike on this...

Buffy = started going down hill imho...don't think a movie would add anything to the series
Angel = ended on a perfect note

Any Buffy movie made now would be completely different than the early 90s one. The Buffy movie then was Joss Whedon's idea, but he removed himself from the movie when he saw it was not meeting his original vision. Then he came back a few years later and made the TV series, with complete creative control himself, and the theme and tone was drastically different than the movie.

as far as how well Buffy was received when it was on.... it didn't get especially huge ratings because it was on smaller networks, and it had a big "geek factor", but you don't have to look very far to find it on a lot of critic's Top-10 shows ever lists. Not to mention, it has the highest amount of academic papers and journal entries written about it than any other tv show ever.

a new movie would be difficult, though. They killed several main characters in the last Season of Buffy, and then killed some more in Angel, in anticipation of not continuing the show. Of course, there is now a Buffy "Season 8" ongoing in a comic book that is supposed to be pretty good. i guess they could start up a movie after Season 8 or 9 comic books wrap up.

--------

back to Firefly.... Fox really screwed over the whole series. Joss Whedon had 7 full seasons of the show planned, and he was obviously unraveling the very first part of his plan slowly during the 1st half Season 1. Then it was cancelled, so his 7 year plan was shot.
.... then they brought it back from the dead and said "ok, you can make 1 movie". I'm guessing he rolled several season's worth of story lines into Serenity, since he probably thought he would never make another movie or show about it. So I think he really went all-out in killing off characters that could have stayed around a lot longer and developing plotlines in a matter of minutes that would have better been told over the course of a whole TV season.

Point being, just because the studios keep getting hints of gold from high DVD sales from TV and movies, they can't expect Whedon to continue to write new stories in this stop-and-go fashion. If they had allowed the series to continue in the first place, everybody would be a lot better off in the end.

Update of sorts on that Tudyk interview suggesting a possible sequel suggesting that when he said 'they might make another one' he was refering to a rerelease of the DVD not 'another one' as in a movie (also why would htey be talking to Tudyk about doing another one?):

^^Aintitcool is wrong I think...reread his interview...it refers to "direct-to-DVD movie", which Serenity wasnt, as well as "sequel", which Serenity wasnt. Universal saying ‘So, let’s do another one’ probably does refer to the new DVD, since if it referred to a sequel there would be reason for much more than cautious optimism.

Ok so after hearing all the fellating of Firefly/Serenity that was going on here at TWW, I decided to rent it without ever seeing a trailer. Here are my thoughts after disc 1:

OMFG GREAT FUCKING SCI-FI SHOW!!!!!! !!!! !! !! ! !

I love the whole mix of western and sci-fi, the music fucking rocks and the space shots all are VERY similar to Battlestar Galactica, which I also love. So yes, this show is great. Just got disc 2 in and can't wait to watch.

If you want to continue the story, they made a few graphic novels which are canon. The two most important ones are "A Shepard's Tale" and "Leaves on the Wind". The former reveals the entire mystery behind Shepard, which was supposed to be slowly revealed throughout the series; the latter continues the story shortly after the conclusion of "Serenity".

kind of wonder if only hbo could have picked up the series and ran with it, kind of a sci fi to precede the fantasy success they had with game of thrones
