I really want a TT bike. I'm probably going to break down and get one this fall or winter. I'll probably get a new road bike next year too, so if you're looking for a 56 cm bike in 12 months or so let me know.

This hobby is getting pretty expensive.

I was really excited about doing the Bull Moon ride in Durham on Saturday, but now I may not get to do it because I'm sick, possibly related to a tick bite .

ok people i was at the Performance in Cary that I go to all the time, since it is a mile from my house. Last night at 7pm they had TWO 'recycled' road bikes for $200/ each.

One medium, one small, components were Shimano Sora. If I needed another bike I would have grabbed the medium one for a commuter! Probably both still there, so get on it for a good deal

Fuji Newest 3.0 both in blue. Probably 09 spec?? didn't ask 'cause it was busy, plus didn't want to draw attention to a good deal..................

I took a pic of the signs with my phone

*Cheerwhiner corporation and the Performance corporation are in no way connection. Cheerwhiner makes no guarantee that said bikes will be available to anyone who does not jump on the deals.

I was diagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last week from my damn tick bite, put on antibiotics, and told to take it easy on the exercise. I figured the doctor meant, just don't run as much, so I've been training my Weimaraner mix to run alongside the bike. Any ideas on biking with a dog? I've learned I need to get him a better harness, because his current one has rubbed his chest raw.

I've clocked about 80 miles on the bike, 2 hours in the pool, and a measly 40 min. running so far this week. Let's see if I break 100 miles with a long ride (50+) on Saturday morning.

^^^ Sora components are more than alright for most people including yourself. It takes many many miles and much experience to outgrow those components.

But you know some people are gadget/label whores.

I average about 80-120 miles per week on most weeks. I can normally do that in 3 days, training with the Bike Team (Dire Wolf Racing). http://direwolfracing.webs.com/

I started riding my bike to work, I'm lucky that we have a gym where I can shower and lock my uniform up over night. It's only 5 miles but takes about 25 min because of lights and crappy bumps that slow me down. I have a road bike and there's a railroad track that I have to go over at walking speed. Another railroad track is diagonal to the road and I'm always worried it's gonna catch my tire.

Last weekend I visited my dad in NC and went on a ride with him. It was tough!! Apparently there's these things called "hills" that we don't have in Charleston. The roads were awesome though, lots of winding country highways. Most roads here resemble Capital Blvd.

20 miles yesterday, volunteered, and then ran 4 miles when I got home with my new hydration pack. 50 miles this morning starting at butt crack o'clock. I might be ready for that century and a September Oly triathlon after all!

Only downside is, I've been creating Mt. Washmore every week from all the sweaty clothes.

anyone have experience fedexing or upsing a bike?

im going to be in maui aug 10-14 & kauai aug 15-22 and would LOVE to have my roadbike with me. esp since there will be a lot of downtime for me to ride!

according to continental, as long as i keep the bike under 50lbs & < 62 linear inches, i can check it for free (i'm an elite access member and get 2 checked bags free & the bike with the limitations i posted keep it as normal luggage according to the website)

im flying continental to maui but an inter-island airline from maui-honolulu-kauai-honolulu & back to houston on continental from honolulu. for those of you keeping score at home, thats 3 non-continental flights i need to have my bike on.

i can circumvent the maui-honolulu-kauai part by shipping my bike directly from maui-kauai and i think it might cost $30-40 based on what i saw on the website. (this is vs $50 for 2 flights) i will have to pay the $25 fee to get it from kauai-honolulu to get back to houston.

so if my estimates are correct, it will only cost me about $60 to have my roadbike in hawaii with me for almost 2 weeks.

i know this might be an oddball question and i plan to check with fedex & ups as well but wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas/experiences

I used to ship bikes on a daily basis.

FedEx is the way to go. Take it to a shop, have them box it (should be around $40-60 to box it for you) and if they handle the shipping also, just have them do it through the shop. Otherwise take it to FedEx, make sure you insure it for at least the value (duh)

Ship it to the hotel or wherever you will be staying. If there is a shop in the area and you dont know how to reassemble/tune the bike, just call them ahead of time and have them build it as soon as it arrives.

Unless you have a bike box, a real one, hard plastic kind, not just a cardboard box, DO NOT take your bike on the plane. Especially if you have a connection (3 flights? no f'n way.) Ya know, unless you hate your bike.

Alternatively, Im sure there are shops that rent bikes somewhere there and would likely be cheaper than shipping yours there and back, plus the shop fees to box/build/etc. Because honestly, how often are you going to ride while you are there?

This won't be possible.

I had a bike shipped to me. It was shipped in a standard bike box that they use to ship bicycles from a warehouse. It cost about $105. The dimensions are going to be crazy no matter what, and that's what makes it expensive. It has to be shipped freight.

icanread, thanks for the fedex tip

there are some details to this that i didnt make very clear

- the 3 flights thing is misleading. i am flying direct from houston to maui & will ride in maui. my plan was to then ship it directly to kauai since i am flying from maui to honolulu & spending one night there before going on to kauai. from kauai i will have to fly with it to maui then get all my shit & recheck in (going from inter-island flight to regular flight)

^ i understand that part might be too crazy for a cardboard box... what can i doooo?

- i have considered a hard bike box but having trouble getting dimension information

- i will have a bike shop pack my box in houston but as for reassembly on the other end, my bf knows how to do this

god, i think i can get it under 62 linear inches since i can control the box its being shipped in.

- my bf will have his bike (hes flying from honolulu only & the military will pay for his bike to be shipped/packed on a plane)

- lots of riding. we've already done everything in kauai & the scenery is beautiful, scenic & remote. the only other thing to do is the beach. plus, lots of free time for me as he has to work a bit.

- i looked into renting a bike & 1 week road bike rental in maui is $250...

im more than happy to purchase a hard bike case if it fits the airline criteria but from what im reading they are very heavy!

^ I'd definitely pay the $250 for a nice rental bike, maybe something you wouldn't normally ride at home, and leave it at that. I wanted to take my commuter bike to San Francisco a few years ago, but the $100/flight charge deterred me from such an idea. We ended up having a better time biking around San Francisco and Portland on borrowed hybrid bikes. They looked shitty so no one wanted to steal them.

Additionally, I wouldn't want to ding up my nicer bikes for a few days of riding. You could get a bent wheel or a cracked frame- unlikely, but ugh.

well $250 is just for maui, i'll also be in kauai for a solid week

i have come to the conclusion you already gave me, the 62 linear inches thing isnt going to happen

i can fly with my bike $100 each way with continental. and i can take it on my 3 inter island flights for $25 each. so using airlines alone i can do it for $275

now my goal is to see if its possible for less by fed exing it between islands, which if its less than $50, will get me below $275

imo, its worth it to have my bike available to ride for 2 weeks in hawaii for $275.. because that $250 rate doesn't include taxes

but im also hassled with the assembly/disassembly & hauling around the airport

still not 100% decided but i have a little time to figure it out

Yeah shipping bikes is a PITA. I had to deal with that headache when I wanted to get my dad's Falcon from Portland, OR to here.

It cost him $65, but he got like 50% off because he used the university he teaches at to ship the package. Otherwise it would have been at least $130-150.

The weight isn't really the issue, because most bikes weigh no more than 30 lbs. The fact is that the length/width/height dimensions shoot it into "oversize package" territory which like triples the shipping costs.

im really trying to make it work. my bf will have his bike, like i said, and i really really want to ride too. i know i'll be super jealous if hes going out for a ride and i have to sit around and do something else.

the bike shop associated with my cycling club rents bike boxes so i plan to look into that as an option too. the club is really really wallet friendly so i have a feeling i can rent it on the cheap instead of buying a box or risking it with a cardboard one

I have a hard plastic bike case I am trying to sell. It'd be more expensive short term, but with as much as it sounds like you travel, it would cost alot less over the long haul.

It's a nice case, padded inside and fits both of my 56cm bikes (tri and road) just fine. You only have to take the front wheel off and disconnect the handlebars from the stem so they lay flat. I have never flown with it, but from what I understand, most airlines will only charge you the baggage fee for it.

PM me if you are interested.

^ I feel your pain. After Sunday when I nearly melted in the heat, I have not been interested in heading out at 7 a.m. to go riding before work. 15 min at a commuter pace to work drenches me in sweat and I have to change and take in 1 L of water + electrolytes.

It has been cool enough to run when it rains, so I've been back to doing that- 6 miles last night after a 4 day break. Yoga + swimming round out the fitness.

Anyone doing any upcoming tris? I'm interested in 1 Oly in September, and Pinehurt in October.

i just did 21 and it was all i had in me. damn it was hot and got dark in the last 2. good ride 1:07.

i am going to try and do a sprint tri this fall. i ran for the first time tuesday. i only did 2 miles or so and it was slow and hard. i still weigh 238 and hope to be in the 220's by fall. i think i can do a sprint now but it would be 1:45-2:00 i am sure. I hope that in 8-12 weeks i could get that down to 1:30-1:45.

Anyone gone to a bike store and have them fit you and make adjustments? My dad built my bike up and while he's a great cyclist in his own right, I think I need to get a third party to look at the geometry and make sure I'm sitting right.

I have lower back pain and numbness/pain in my hands when I do < 20 miles, don't think I should be having those problems on short rides.

wherever you choose know this

-- they should guarantee the fit. so if you ride it a few times & its still not right, they should make the correct adjustments as part of the original price (im not sure how much this should cost as my bike shop does free fits when you buy your bike there)

-- i was fitted by 2 different people. the first fit was wrong. how did i know? just happened to figure it out. the second guy was using a tape measure & i got off and on the bike about 5 times. he also adjusted my handle bars. the tape measure part is important! i forget what exactly they're measuring but the more precise the fit, the better it will be.

try to make sure that the person doing the fit is qualified to do so. the bike shop manager did my fit the second time and the first time (when it was wrong) i think it was just some yahoo who knew how to change the height of the seat post (and of course i didnt know any better because i was just starting out)

im sure there are plenty of fit techs down there, but if you dont mind driving a bit, its worth it....plus its a pretty damn cool shop

knocked out 40 miles this morning. i was by far the strongest in my usual group today. i seem to have no problem pulling the pack on saturdays. last year i could only pull for 30 minutes. today i did a 10 minute pull. then multiple 5 minute pulls. the more solo time i have been putting in is paying off. i am quite excited. my max heart rate hit 174 but that was only because i was sprinting up our largest hill of the day. man i love cycling. down to 235 right now. i started last august at 280lbs.
