^^^ That's just too easy, man. He's a sitting VP with--believe it or not--a many responsibilities and a national pulpit.

And let's just be honest with each other for a sec: Biden is a walking disaster of a human gaffe machine and you know it. He's hurting Obama and the Democrats as a whole--and if a Republican were to make even half the goof-ups Biden does, you'd be in here on the regular guffawing about what an idiot he/she was.

And you're right--the Republicans have nobody for president. I mean, Romney's the only big name and I don't really care for him that much. This fact alone could propel Obama to a second term--that and the whole divided government thing. I think the Republicans will take back Congress.

BTW, I missed you a little, schmoe.

^^ Fair enough.

[Edited on June 29, 2010 at 5:02 PM. Reason : I was responding to your "don't care about Biden's actions" post pre-edit, schmoe.]

Saying something this nebulous is no different than the gaffes that you've claimed he makes. I don't know of a single politician that hasn't misspoken from time to time, so singling out Biden for this just seems unnecessarily petty.

^ You're slipping toward ad hom. Look, I've obviously had some fun with Biden over the years, but he has become a liability--and I never thought he was much of an asset to begin with.

My comments aren't "petty" at all. I'm giving you an honest assessment of Biden (and, yes, an admittedly unflattering image) that is very much in line with mainstream thought. And it's one thing for a politician to slip up once in a while, but it's an entirely different thing altogether when it reaches the level of Biden's epic cavalcade of continual and continuing gaffes--just look them up for yourself. He's way beyond the average.

Maybe you're paying attention to what he's saying more closely than I, because I'm just not seeing the "epic cavalcade" of gaffes that you see.

Listening to the vice president is like listening to the crack addict on the street corner. Neither of them has the power to do shit. I doubt they even let biden attend the real meetings.

Biden Accuses GOPers Of Forcing "No" Votes
June 29, 2010

Quote :
"'I know at least 7 [GOP] senators, who I will not name, but were made to make a commitment under threat of losing their chairmanships, if they did not support the leadership on every procedural vote,' Biden said at a fundraiser Monday night."

Quote :
"'If the Vice President of the United States is going to make an accusation of this magnitude, he needs to prove it,' said RNC communications director Doug Heye. 'Otherwise, this is more than just the Biden gaffe of the day, it is a scurrilous accusation with no merit that warrants an immediate retraction.'

Biden's office did not respond to emails seeking clarification."

You can't just say every comment is a gaffe and then dismiss it.

^ The post stands on its own merit. And I didn't say Biden's comment was a gaffe--the GOP did.

I don't know whether Biden's accusations are true or not. But I do know that if Biden is going to make such inflammatory accusations, he should back them up with evidence and not avoid responding to media requests for clarification.

In fairness, just because the GOP called it a gaffe doesn't mean that it is, either. Michael Steele is a gaffe machine in his own right, after all.

^ Right. That's why I posted this:

And, yes, even though I generally like Steele, he's had his fair share of gaffes and outright screwups. No question.

Biden has traveled to Iraq over the holiday weekend--if give him credit for doing this. Sure, there's probably some PR in it, but he made the trip so good for him.

I give credit where credit is due. And I think Biden serving hot dogs and beer to our returning men and women in uniform was a fun thing to do.

Vice President Biden Serves Hot Dogs on Colbert Report
16 hours ago

Quote :
"After dedicating his show to the combat troops returning from Iraq, Colbert gave his audience American beer and hot dogs, with Vice President Joe Biden serving as hot-dog vendor. Biden quipped that he only has two constitutional duties — breaking ties in the Senate and serving hot dogs to returning troops."

Biden also had a few kind words for George Bush, but this is secondary. Good job, Joe.

Sure, I guess some might consider the term Shylocks to be anti-Semitic.

and I think referring to someone as "the wisest man in the orient" is no biggie.

I don't associate shylocks with Jews, but I'm not really up on my racism I guess.

But he is the vp of the United States so he should be more careful.

^^I think it's been considered out-dated, and potentially offensive for a while now (decades?)... at least when referring to the people. The Merrian-Webster dictionary says it's "sometimes offensive".

^^&^^^ for what reason is it considered "offensive"?

And given that there's a Chinese restaurant near my office called Orient Garden I'm not sure they consider it offensive either.

Again, I think it's can be considered deragotry when referring to people, not necessarily objects

Quote :
"Why “Oriental” Is a No-No

What’s the problem with using the term “Oriental” to describe individuals of Asian descent? Common complaints about the term include that it should be reserved for objects, such as rugs, and not people, and that it’s antiquated—akin to using “Negro” to describe an African American. Howard University Law Professor Frank H. Wu made the comparison in a 2009 New York Times piece about the state of New York banning the use of “Oriental” on government forms and documents. Washington State passed a similar ban in 2002.

“It’s associated with a time period when Asians had a subordinate status,” Professor Wu told the Times. He added that people link the term to old stereotypes of Asians and the era when the United States government passed exclusion acts to keep Asian people from entering the country. Given this, “For many Asian Americans, it’s not just this term: It’s about much more…It’s about your legitimacy to be here,” Wu said.

In the same piece, historian Mae M. Ngai, author of Impossible Subjects: Illegal Aliens and the Making of Modern America, explained that, while the term “Oriental” isn’t a slur, it’s never been widely used by people of Asian descent to describe themselves.

“I think it’s fallen into disfavor because it’s what other people call us. It’s only the East if you’re from somewhere else,” Ngai said, referring to “Oriental’s” meaning—“Eastern.” “It’s a Eurocentric name for us, which is why it’s wrong. You should call people by what (they) call themselves, not how they are situated in relation to yourself.”

Due to the history of the term and the era it evokes, it’s best to follow the leads of New York State and Washington State and delete the word “Oriental” from your lexicon when describing people. When in doubt, use the term Asian or Asian American. However, if you are privy to someone’s specific ethnic background, refer to them as Korean, Japanese American, Chinese Canadian and so forth.

^ if Orient is only offensive because some Americans used it pejoratively to sino-americans, then it doesn't necessarily have the same connotation in the context biden used it. Not to mention, i don't think anyone uses it in this context anymore, or even understands it that way.

And it doesn't seem like anyone actually complained, just mediaite wanting to write an article about it.
