i had to have been ten years old the last time i was so apathetic about football.

the way my hopes were dashed last year had traumatic effects. not even the infamous gavin-four-loss-season in basketball had such a long-lasting impact.

So do you guys think a bowl bid a realistic expectation this year?

Maybe. We'll see how good the defense is this year.

I mean I know that our secondary sucked last year, but they couldn't have gotten any worse right?

^ Clem Johnson graduated and Rashard Smith and Jarvis Byrd are both out for the season. I don't see it getting any better, that's for sure.

I think we're automatically above-average to good on offense with Wilson and our WR's/Bryan. If our O-line shows up and helps to create a consistent running game our offense could be even better.

On defense you still don't know if our D-line will be as good as last year(it probably won't be). Linebackers I'm not at all worried about. The secondary you already know about.

Special teams will be a mixed bag. Pretty good PR/KR. However, the possibility of the return of the 6 yard punt with Ruiz's return still makes me uneasy.

Not trying to be an ass, but not expecting to go to a bowl in an era where going 6-6 qualifies is pretty fucking pathetic. Plus we're in year 4 of the TOB regime and all the injury excuses are getting old, if you can't get your team to a bowl game in year 4 you probably shouldn't be a head coach (even at Duke). With that said, I think we have a very realistic shot at a bowl...the Atlantic is relatively weak, we have an excellent and experienced QB and the defense doesn't have to improve by leaps and bounds for us to be good (they just have to improve a little).

I might be the only one, but I actually think the DL will improve next year. Yeah, we lost Young and Cash, and yeah, we don't really have any star power on the line, but I've got a good feeling about them.

-Lemon was the best playmaker on the line last year, behind young. He's better against the run too

-Rieskamp looked really promising his freshman year; seems like one of those high-motor guys

-Kuhn is big and tough; I'm expecting big things this year after he redshirted last year

-I have no idea what to expect out of Slay and Akinniyi, but if they're starters on the organizational chart, hopefully that means they can play

That said, I still have nightmares about our secondary. I know everybody liked to shit on DeAndre Morgan, but we could sure use him back right now. Here's to hoping Amerson is the real deal.

^ I believe Amerson will be the 'real deal'. But he will still be a Freshman.

As for the offense, the young OL will be a MAJOR point of concern against decent to really good offense (AKA we will need the luck of Obrien again this year to beat UNX).

This is coming from someone that doesnt know what they are talking about. Its the first day of practice. GO PACK!

so, in a year where we have higher expectations (last year 2009) i get Trinity lot and section 29.

a year later, after we suck and go to no bowl, i donate more money and i get moved from 29 to 30, and from Trinity lot to Cardinal Gibbons.

this is crappy.

Maybe, but I also think a two win season is a realistic expectation this year.

Western Carolina: W - I hope we've got this one. Looks like they are coming off a 2 win season.

at UCF: ? - I have no idea. I haven't followed them since we played them in 2007 was it? Away game, our defense. I'll lean toward a loss.

Cincinnati: L

at Georgia Tech: L - They had a good year last year, but their RB is gone. Might not make a difference though.

Virginia Tech: L - The pessimist in me. I'm just not seeing it.

Boston College: L - Again the pessimist in me. I'm not sure we'll beat BC under TOB. They have our number.

at East Carolina: ? - I could go either way. I hope the prediction doesn't come true, but we might be coming into this game on a 4 blowout losing streak. By this point our opponents will likely have hours of footage on how to pick apart our defense. We'll either be hungry for a win or we will have lost hope on getting wins.

Florida State: L - Don't they still have that QB? Did their defense improve. Maybe we could be on the winning side by having the ball last. Who will be the winner in this 78 - 76 contest.

at Clemson: L - What are we, on a 6 game losing streak with Clemson?

Wake Forest: ? - I have no idea. They had a bad year last year as well, but they did beat us... and Duke.

at North Carolina: ? - Another game that I have no idea how it will turn out. By all rights we should have been destroyed by them in recent years, but we always seem to come out on top. Maybe that will be my prediction. See who wins on paper by this point in the season, then predict the opposite.

at Maryland: ? - It seems like Maryland has our number most of the time, but they won 2 games last year. That said they are our last game of the season. I'm thinking of a situation where we might be a game away from bowl eligibility... we just need to get past Maryland... our last game of the season. Flashbacks.

Also, seems like there are a lot of similarities in this year's schedule and 2007's schedule:
1) UCF as OOC game.
2) ECU as OOC game.
3) UNC, WF, and Maryland to round out the season.
4) One FCS opponent.

I agree about the secondary. After losing three guys - one to graduation and two to injury - I don't see it getting any better. Maybe they'll improve somewhat over the course of the season. But I'm expecting the same 'ol problems with the same players.

Maverick1024, don't forget about Mageo and Sweezy.

Mageo - decent backup last year behind Cash. We need him to step up this season and play like a starter.

Sweezy - promising backup last year who rotated in the lineup regularly. Had a great tackle for loss against Wake and was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Yep, losing to South Carolina and Wake hurt pretty bad last year ... but seeing Duke ass rape us made me numb/cold/apathetic towards football.

I've honestly never went into a season with so little expectations. Maybe that's a good thing though.
