is it just me, or is Cody Zeller already better as a freshman than Tyler is as a senior? though Tyler might be a junior if his frail ass got a medical redshirt one of his first years

His game against us was better than any game I've seen Tyler play and watching him today and against UK, it wasn't a fluke

Although you have to factor in that Tyler is coached by Roy Williams

Andre Drummond had his first beast game of the year, granted only against Holy Cross (though they did beat an ACC team by 20 earlier this year). 24 points on 11-12 shooting, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. If he can continue to improve he'll probably go first overall in the draft next year.

[Edited on December 18, 2011 at 9:18 PM. Reason : wasnt cody a higher rated recruit? and both are way better than the black sheep zeller from ND]

So UConn announced today that Drummond is a walk-on this year and Bradley got the scholarship. Drummond is "in the process of acquiring a loan".

This doesn't sound fishy at all.

It's not if you read the article. Bradley gave his up but Drummond said hed pay (not too hard to get a loan when youre all but guaranteed to be a top 3 pick). They had to go through compliance to make sure a recruited player can be a walk on which is why it took a while.

You can question whether Bradley was "willingly" going to give up his scholly originally but there is nothing wrong with Drummond.

[Edited on December 22, 2011 at 12:14 PM. Reason : And they are on probation which brings more NCAA scrutiny anyway]

unless calhoun has decided he wants to win another national title and then retire and not give a fuck about what happens to uconn, there's no way he's giving someone an illegal scholarship right now.

Edit: i know there's an "explanation", but it just seems weird that one of the better college players in the country is going to be a walk-on. Can you really get a loan based on the speculation that you'll be making millions in the NBA next year? What if you got injured?

It was fully vetted from a scholarship/walkon perspective . I guess you can say that you don't know where Drummond is paying from, which is fair, but like I said, what bank wouldnt give a consensus top 3 pick with injury insurance a loan?

When the fuck has this ever happened?? If UNC/Duke did this with a recruit, we (and you) would be all over it...and don't even try to deny it. Louisville is doing it with two players right now...but one is the younger brother of an NBA player (JR Smith) and the other player's dad is a friggin brain surgeon.

I've been in Connecticut for a week...and everyone is laughing about it up here. I've never been an anti-UConn guy...but this situation is ridiculous.

I'm sure the NCAA is just not even worrying about it or checking in to it since UConn has never been in trouble. Not like they are on probation or anything and under heavy scrutiny. Do you really think that if something is off here it wouldn't be investigated? They JUST got dinged by the NCAA. If there is something going on it will come out and they will be punished as they should. It's not like because Rece Davis is boys with Jim Calhoun the NCAA will turn a blind eye.

UConn has done plenty of sketchy stuff not limited to Miles (but also not much more than most other schools save a handful have done over the past 30 years). I just don't think the Drummond thing is knowing what I know. It WAS more sketch forcing a guy who IS NOT going to be a NBA player to give up his scholly knowing full well he wouldn't have the means to pay back any aid/loan that he would have to take.

And, lol, they fired all their compliance staff and hired new. Talk about the wrong people taking the sword...

So, is it just them doing an end-around the loss of the scholarship? Because if that's the case I'm surprised they're allowed.

Didn't UConn have a scrub to axe for that?

Still sounds off even if it's perfectly ok under NCAA rules. I wonder if Dummond is having to go through the normal student aid process or if he's just being allowed to get the quick private loans y'all are talking about.

Of course it's a way around the scholarships being taken away. That's pretty obvious.

To my knowledge, from what I've read, a recruited player can NOT get any aid from the school in any way in his first year, so it has to be all private. Which for a potential #1 overall pick who has injury insurance that shouldn't be very hard...

I'm not naive, I realize UConn has had it's fair share of run-ins with the NCAA and other things, but I just don't see this one. They are under such heavy scrutiny it just doesn't make sense to make sure this is fully vetted.

i understand how this follows the rules, but for a kid to pay for college on a loan that is based on his future earnings in the nba is objectively different than the standard walk-on scenario.

i'm not saying anything should happen, but the ncaa has to be peeved about this.

BC is going to be one of the worst ACC teams of our lifetime this year. They are flat out terrible. Maybe the 8th best team in New England (Providence, Harvard, UMass, UConn, Holy Cross, BU, Fairfield)
