Noob question, how to I check my FPS? I am assuming there is a program that runs in the background? anyone got a link?

^^ and you'll be buying it again in a month when drivers and patches are done.

^ Beta has no tessellation or most of the DX11 features the RC will have. This is where Fermi will shine and the 5870 will fall.

^^Hell I'm going to make it work on a GTS 250. Just have that shit at 1440x900 or 1280x800 and crank down the AA/Anisotrophic

Sure my eyes will be bleeding, but the Xbox beta was pretty garbage graphically too and the benefits of PC outweigh the rest.

Download the free version of FRAPS, it'll put your FPS in any corner you want.

Prospero, have you tried a different pci-e slot? Also try to uninstall the nvidia drivers when you have the 9800gx2 installed. could be a driver issue from that.

Just in case he missed it

Quote :
"so Prospero you also believe the 5870 is faster than the 480 and 570 as in the benchmark?

I obviously don't know how benchmarks works since I said I got faster FPS on a lower end machine with the same GPU. However I forgot my 480 is OC'd to 880/1760/4000, which is pretty far over stock speeds. The 570 can't OC like that due to it's VRM, but with both cards at stock the 480 still has an extra 8 ROPs (Raster Operator units) units over the 570 and 256Mb of VRAM unless you paid extra to get the 2Gb version of the 570. Those 8 ROP units might not seem like much, but it increases the fill rate resulting in higher performance (GPixel/s). So the cards are almost equal, but the 480 is still the higher spec card and it has large OC potential with after market cooling.

But it is like arguing over the T/A Firebird vs SS Camaro.

^ sorry about your troubles, I swear I hear more and more people having issues with the 570 in one way or another. Normally it was always trouble OCing and/or killing the card doing OCing even with After Market cooling due to the lower spec VRM vs the 580/480. Yours sounds like DOA though.

That benchmark means nothing anyway, it is Beta. In 3 weeks from today we will have the real game and then we can see some benches. Since they don't test the 480 anymore I normally guess my card w/ OC right above the 570.

Oh yea the 480 also has a larger Bus Width at 384bit vs 320bit on the 570 resulting in higher memory bandwidth on the 480.

The 570 at stock speeds is faster than the 5870 and 480 both at stock speeds. The 570 can be OC, but very carefully. If you try to be greedy and go over 1.05v that's where you might start getting into trouble. Most instances have been where people go 1.1v, but in order to do that you have to disable one of the safety protocols/bypass the voltage regulator. At least this is what I've researched.

But yeah, I'd put more faith in your 480 SC in being faster than the other two. The 5870 is very close to the 480.

Fuck it I know it'll be harder once it's the full-release version for my 5870 to be as awesome, but I have great FPS on beta so I think I can probably be fine in the full version.

i don't know, i didn't do the benchmark, i haven't run the ATI Preview Driver they came out with for Battlefield 3.... this is the nature of benchmarks, they are specific to the benched platform and drivers used, and more often than not it should be an even playing field at least for the graphics cards running the same driver... so you can easily compare nvidia cards and you can easily compare ati cards... comparing them to each other will be difficult until we see the final game and the official drivers released.

but comparing a 570 & 480 at stock speeds running on the same platform using the same driver, yes i believe the 570 is faster.

So apparently, if you join a hacked server that lists as 128 player slots for player stats boosting, it can lead you to a full EA account ban... hummm... wondered how ppl were able to get rank 145 in 3 hours. lol

It is pretty obvious they mean 5970 2Gb, I know a friend with a 5870 and an i7 930 and I am able to run the game at a higher res with higher settings at a higher avg FPS with an older system + OCd 480.

This looks far more realistic:

Notice the huge jump in FPS from a 580 OC vs stock, this game is ALL GPU.

Also the 6970 OC vs stock got a good jump. Basically if you want to play BF3 the best you need to put as much money into your GPU as you can (modded PCB versions, buy aftermarket cooler + OC, etc). A S775 board with a Q9550 is plenty for CPU.

The great thing about that bench is look how there are no large FPS drops for any card, almost all min FPS readings are within 5-10 fps of the avg.

2x 570s are that good, but not all games will support SLI (I used to have a 295)

Every game I play supports it. It's hard to find a game that doesn't these days. Nvidia is quick about adding SLI profiles to their drivers/site.

that is the problem with SLI/CF, you always have to update your drivers for new games.

btw 2x 560ti would be close to the stock 580.

However keep in mind the game is not running all the DX11 features yet. Tessellation will be a large hit on FPS, it is in every game it is available in. That is just one DX11 feature not turned on yet and the textures may get larger (better looking). We really don't know how Frostbite 2.0 is going to perform until we see the RC with full DX11 settings.

2 560ti's would be much more then close. They'd perform much better than a single 580. 2 460's perform better than a single 580. 560s even more so.

^^^

It all depends on drivers and the game, I would much rather have a 580 than 2x 560's just due to the hassle (like I said I've done the whole SLI bit before). SLI is great when it works, but you have the dread micro-stutter issue on some setups and you have the heat and power consumption of 2 cards.

570's are pretty damn good. It's really hard to swallow $500-550 for each 580's with a 250-350 570's are only a few frames behind. And SLI/CF scaling sucks beyond a two card setup. Reason why nvidia doesn't officially support quad 580's; at that point you are really stressing the pcie bandwidth and since you can only get x8/x8/x8 on z68 with supplement nvidia south-bridge.

odd, I just used fraps to see what my 5870 was getting before I switch to the 570 and it says I'm getting 67fps average with a max of 95 outside and 82fps average with a max of 103 indoors.

GTX 570 is getting 65fps with a max of 83 outdoors and 78fps avg with 109 max indoors. Seems a bit slower than the 5870 but I want to point out that my textures aren't freaking out/flashing every minute, my 2nd monitor is not spazzing out like a crack head and the video seems so much more smoother. The cooler does seem odd with the crazy small blower fan and does seem a few decibels louder with a higher pitch, but not much more bothersome than the 5870 on full blast.

I'm sure if I did a clean install and trimmed the fat on this pc, I'd be better off, but I'm pretty happy with my $250 card now.

I didn't buy the insurance, it has a 30day warranty with NCIX and a 3 year warranty with MSI after that. If I were you, I'd still buy it at the $250 price, you can always offload it for a little profit or at cost in a few months. Don't forget you get the free batman game coupon.

I do wish it was the Twin Frozr OC version though, but I'm not paying $330 for one. I'm just glad I'm able to switch to the 570 from my 5870 without losing any money. Selling the 5870 to a friend who wanted to setup a CF and he has the exact same xfx card.

But how good your computer is determines how good the game looks and gives you a better view into the graphical potential of the game. If you have a shitty computer or game on a console you're just missing out. I guess like watching a movie half blind.

You can emulate Mario Kart 64 in 1080p with AA, anisotropic filtering, and vsync, and use some 360 controllers for some sick MK action.

Depends.

Medium: 90-120 (prefer with 120hz monitor)
High: 50-90
Ultra: 30-60

Somewhere around there maybe. Varies a lot once you go outside and things start to blow up.

I'm avging 50fps at all Ultra w/ Full AA/AF @ 1200p

Q9550@3.55ghz + 8Gb OCZ Reapers + Highly OCd GTX 480

This game fucking loves GPUs from all the benches I've read (which don't mean that much in relation to the RC).

Also it is important to have maximum VRAM that you can afford. At the settings above my GTX 480 uses 1400mb of VRAM; that is far higher than any other game I have ever played (I own around 90 games on Steam).

I think you need to correct your statement, otherwise provide video to prove that.

Considering it's virtually the same card as the 570, even OC'd won't get you above 35fps @ 1200 with Ultra 4/16.... the 580 can only do 36fps at that resolution.... 50fps is bullshit.

40fps average maybe. 50fps max.
