Pet Food Drive Friday the 7th

submitted by Supplanter on Wednesday, August 5 at 3:35 PM

Carrboro Plaza Vet in conjunction with the Orange County Animal Shelter is hosting our 2nd annual Pet Food Drive. I've organized this event 2 years in a row because, while there are many worthwhile charities out there, pets cannot speak out for themselves... and economic downturns can be especially rough on animal shelters both in terms of decreased support & an increased number of animals to take care of.

We're collecting pet food & supplies until Friday August the 7th at 1 pm. And we will be having our Grand Finale Event between 12 & 1pm on Friday.

If you can stop by between 12 & 1, we invite & encourage you to hang out, grab a goodie bag, enjoy the refreshments, and meet some of the staff from Carrboro Plaza Vet & the Orange County Animal shelter -- plus play with a few dogs that are available for adoption! Friday also happens to be last day at the vet clinic after a 3 year run there before returning to NCSU to be a full time grad student, so I hope to see lots of friendly faces before I go!

^I live on the east end of Chapel Hill not too far from 40, which is a bit closer to Raleigh than Carrboro, so if that was any easier for you, you could pm me & I could give you directions to here. But in all honesty that might only cut off 10 or 15 minutes of the drive which wouldn't be a huge chunk. But if you can't make it to this event, just call your local animal shelter, they'll almost never turn down pet food donations. And in the end whether it supports this event or not, it is all going to the same cause of feeding hungry animals.

Food collected at last years Pet Food Drive

I was interviewed by a local radio station that reaches all of Orange County, much of Durham, and parts of Wake about this event. And I've been pushing this hard online & in the clinics newsletter & through a few other routes, so I'm hoping we'll have a pretty strong turn out.

In addition to the interview, they also let me do a "commentary" which is where they let anyone who lives in the area talk about anything local in a 90 sec clip, which they will be playing the day of the event a few times to direct traffic our way. Here is what I said:

Quote :
"This is Jake Gellar-Goad. I'm a Chapel Hill resident, and I've got something to say.

I wanted to talk about the importance of remembering animals in need during this economic downturn. At times like this, there are many non-profit organizations and charities that are worthy of support. But one cause that’s easy to overlook is animal welfare -- because animals can't speak out for themselves.

One way to help is by supporting local shelters. Economic downturns can mean tough decisions for many individuals and families, and some of those decisions result in many more pets ending up at animal shelters at a time when shelters may not be receiving as much support as usual.

There are several ways you can help:

* You can show your support by volunteering at your local shelter.
* You can show your support by finding room in your home for a new four-legged addition.
* Or, you can give pet food & supplies to your local shelter.

Towards that end, I've organized the 2nd annual Pet Food Drive at Carrboro Plaza Vet in conjunction with the Orange County Animal Shelter. If you have any pet food or supplies that you would like to donate, please bring them by Carrboro Plaza Vet by 1 pm today. If you can stop by between 12 & 1, we invite & encourage you to hang out, grab a goodie bag, enjoy the refreshments, and meet some of the staff from Carrboro Plaza Vet & the Orange County Animal shelter -- plus play with a few dogs that are available for adoption! For directions & additional details, check out our website at carrboroplazavet.com."

So if anyone has any pet food or supplies, please bring them by!

Pics from the event!!!

This is one of several of our pet food collection areas. We by far beat our collections from last years food drive.

A rep from Hills Pet Food set up a table with info for our event.

The Orange County Animal Shelter set up a table too. They've joined in on this event both years we've been doing it, and have been the recipients of the pet food.

And of course there were refreshments & goodie bags for all!

Here is Rudder, a doggie from the shelter who is available for adoption, playing with one of our techs.

Here is a group shot of the people who ran the event. The Hills Pet Food Rep is on the left, Sarah Fallin & Rudder from the shelter are in the middle, and I am on the right. This was my last day at the vet clinic before going off to grad school, and the last event I'll get to organize for them, but I sure hope they keep it going so I can attend again next year!
