Hillsborough Hike

submitted by skankinande on Wednesday, December 1 at 11:26 PM

That time has come once again for many seniors to celebrate their graduation. The tradition of the Hillsborough St. hike is one that many students value and appreciate. I would like to remind all of those that take part in this activity to be very safe, and to respect all city/state laws so that it can be enjoyed for semesters to come. The following is a message from Campus Police Chief Tom Younce. Please
spread the word and drink responsibly!

Raleigh Police advises that they will have a zero tolerance policy Friday night. There will be additional patrols on the street to enforce city and state laws. We also will have additional officers working.

Some of the basic laws (these are misdemeanors and not infractions, so the charges can have some repercussion in the future):

1. No open containers on any public street, sidewalk, or parking lots, that includes just walking across the street with an open container.

2. Alcoholic beverages cannot be consumed in a business that has an off premises license, primarily convenience stores, or their parking lots. This is regardless of age. The person consuming and the store are subject to being cited.

3. Of course, no underage possession. Individuals of age who provide alcohol to underage persons are subject to more severe penalties.

Congrats Seniors,

Tony Caravano
Student Body President

hey now... we might endanger ourselves by drinking an open container on hillsborough street. only the homeless bums are allowed to do that.

Being a grad, I would like to say that I hope as many of the seniors who can, take part in it. Because I suspect, like ALL THE OTHER "traditions" the University HAD (campout, the brent road party, etc... ), this one will likely be eliminated soon. Because you know the "protectors of knowledge" (public safety) can't allow gatherings that may escalate into an uprisings of the commoners...

how the hell are they going to say "no, you are NOT allowed to go to bars this night, even IF you are legal?"

the biggest concern for this tradition dying is the number of bars on hb street dwindling... in the future you might go the whole road and get 2 beers and you're done

last semester was my first- and i guess last as an undergrad. lots of ppl got tickets. i would pay close attention to the no drinking on sidewalks law- many were cited in front of places that had crowds flowing out on the sidewalks and students assuming it was okay b/c others were gathering there.
