Before:After:Silas had his sutures out from his cleft lip repair on Friday and he looks FANTASTIC. He has a little glue left over on his face, but he is quite the handsome little chap. And we got the biopsy results back on his new thymus gland. The thymus transplant was a success! In a few months, he'll come off of reverse isolation. Then there should be a TWW playdate!/blog

upon re-reading my previous comment, I see that I came off as a dickhead. This was not my intention...I would like to apologize, and then place the blame on jackleg. he's the one that taught me to say the first thing that came to mind...I'm so happy for Silas. I'm still smiling over here. He's beautiful

Congrats. It sounds like you have been through a lot. I would not handle such a situation very well. Good looking kid.

OH NO YOU DIDN'T CALL ME A JERK!!!boy it cute either way. but the major property of the issue to begin with was basically a groove in the lip area. this groove is gone.either way he smiles like he has already experienced his life love. so cute

you need to combine the new silas w/ old-silas' faux-hawk.
9/15/2008 9:40:50 PM
Josh and I have been debating the whole hair thing. For the first time since he was born, his hair is actually laying down. Until recently, he had the serious faux hawk going on.

Word.My husband and I are pretty much the worst two people to reproduce. He had a cleft lip, I had a cleft palate, and our son has both in conjunction with complete DiGeorge Syndrome. Medical technology is prety baller these days.
9/15/2008 11:43:38 PM
Bring back the faux hawk!I'm glad the kids doing well also.
9/15/2008 11:44:59 PM
^^ I have to say this. Knowing that you have the genetic predispositions that you and your husband do makes you pretty awful people to have a kid knowing the kind of medical trauma that they're certain to have to suffer through.
9/15/2008 11:47:28 PM
aww! that's wonderful! And what a cutie he is!!
9/15/2008 11:49:52 PM
^^Will rot in hell.

My husband and I went through genetic counseling. The chances of us having a child with facial clefting was less than 5%. Facial clefting is one of the most common birth defects in the world and very correctable.I have Klippel Feil Syndrome. It is NOT genetic. It has only been shown to be genetic in family. My son has complete (athymic) DiGeorge Syndrome and has nothing to do with KFS. DGS is very rarely inherited and my husband and I have both tested negative for the associated genetic deletion for the syndrome. There are less than 10 children born every year like my son and there was no way of predicting his problems. My husband and I were both very worried about having children with one another. We were assured by doctors that we had negligible risk, so we got pregnant with their blessing. Our son's doctors have told us time and time again that there was nothing that we could have done or no way that we could have known. They are also telling us that there has never been more than one occurrence among their patients and that we should not hesitate to have more children.[Edited on September 16, 2008 at 12:08 AM. Are you going to have another kid?Regardless of the genetic issues you are both being responsible adults and taking very good care of your child and that is what matters the most.
9/16/2008 12:08:35 AM
My husband and I both want more children. I would love a house full and my husband would like at least one more. We are participating in some rather in depth genetic research at Duke. We will not have another child, if there is a strong possibility that they will have the same problems that Silas has. Silas is far healthier than most children with DGS and we know that we may not be so lucky next time. That will not prevent us from adopting. We both have plenty of room in our hearts for other children.
