Opportunity to go to India for 3-4 weeks to train/lead a team of ~40 people. Typically unheard of for a 1st year to be building a team of other consultants, seniors, and mgrs from the ground up. It'd be great leadership experience, but since I'm training them, I'm not really learning anything new (aside from leading, etc.). I was told about it today. Would leave in 2 weeks. Already have commitments for every weekend (50th bday party, 2 trips w/ nonrefundable tix). Is it worth screwing over my personal life to go do this for a few weeks? If I don't stay with my current firm, how much good will it really do me? Not sure if it'll impact my year-end pay adjustments for this fiscal year. Not sure if it means I come back to a leadership position in the states. Will know more deets tomorrow. But I'll have to make a decision before I get back on the internetz.Thoughts? Advice? Stories?[Edited on April 3, 2012 at 11:20 PM. Reason : .]

Do you think this will end up being the type of thing where you're ultimately training your replacement(s)?I went to India for 2 weeks back in October to help train a group of guys hired to replace some of my friends. I hated the concept of it but knew I had no choice and was in a relatively safe role. Ended up having a really good time and eating some fantastic food. It's a mixed bag, and really depends on the real reasons behind your trip.

do you have any free time? if so, free trip to india is pretty coolsounds like they are putting you in an expensive position, paying for you to go over there and trusting you with that responsibilitydo you get any kind of bonus pay for that kind of time our of country or a big fat perdiem or anything? will you be staying in nice digs? your comfort and $ earning during this experience should weigh in. if they really want you to go, maybe point out what you are giving up i.e. nonrefundable plane tickets. although frequent flyer miles for a trip to india may help out there.[Edited on April 3, 2012 at 11:27 PM. ^^^^^training replacements for the team I'm currrently on, yes. No worries there though.^^^^free time on the weekends though i won't be in the best part of india for 'muricans. good points and i'm not sure if 3-4 weeks warrants a bump in pay. i'm sure the living situation will be nice...gated/guarded neighborhood, etc. if i don't go, my alternative is to continue living on the comany dime in nyc during that time^^^3-4 weeks is serious business. thanks for the 50th congrats ^^true but the commitments i'm giving up involve other people. we tight in my fam and i've got a ridiculous conscience, so missing bday parties and canceling trips eats at me from the inside like crazy.^see tv show: Outsourced[Edited on April 3, 2012 at 11:35 PM. since you've already spent money on other trips, I suggest you stay. You could always go to india later on vacation if you want. It's not that expensive to go there relatively, so don't think this is the chance of a lifetime.

it sounds like you're being trusted with a lot of responsibilityif you decline, you might come off as somewhat ungrateful, or at any rate lacking in comprehension of the professional world...it is possible that you will drop a fair (perhaps a decisive) amount in your bosses eyes if you say noon the other hand, maybe they won't give a shitbut when a possible opportunity knocks, think long and hard before you decide not to answer the doorthese are my two cents...gl yo

1. If you're training people and you aren't learning, then you aren't training people; you're merely a talking body of flesh in front of 40 people bored out of their mind.2. Birthdays happen all the time; send a card.3. Nonrefundable tickets can still be exchanged for other tickets, within a year. Pay the cancellation and transfer fee and be done with it.4. "Deets"? Really?5. "We tight in my fam"? Really?6. Quit being a pussy and go on this trip.
