i always thought it was pronounced "y" but the spanish teacher who uses my classroom during my planning period pronounces it "j"... ?

It can go either way; it's dialectal[Edited on April 23, 2012 at 8:00 AM. Reason : though when prounounced /j/ I've usually heard it as a blend of y and j sounds like in "jacques"]

usually J is mexican and Y is spanish/ south american IIRC

^^ It's not a "j" so much as a "zh" sound, like in French words, but that's otherwise a pretty good distinction.I thought this thread was about parallel lines.
