Why would one want to neutralize stomach acid?

Good thing I read this thread. I was about to take some tums but instead I think I'll just chug some apple cider vinegar and chase it with baking soda.

I'm pretty ignorant to the subject but how does apple cider vinegar neutralize acid? Vinegar in general is pretty acidic.

it has to do with the theory that the sphincter that closes your stomach off from the esophagus becomes unresponsive to the acid in your stomach and relaxes to let the acid up your esophagus. the vinegar is even more acidic than the stomach acid and sometimes will "wake up" the sphincter. you can use white or malt vinegar too if necessary. i guess ACV tastes the best. plus people have tried to project other health properties onto it.

You're right. But, drinking a weaker acid can still raise the pH, and the chyme can obviously get less acidic than pure stomach acid so maybe "stomach contents" would be more proper than "stomach acid". The theory actually is that (we don't have to care why) the sphincter itself gets depleted of H+. It might be a bunch of crap, but I've found it helpful when I think to do it. And i generally feel better afterwards than if I eat too many tums. but it might just be washing your esophagus and a bunch of hippie crap after all. [Edited on April 25, 2012 at 10:09 AM. Reason : ]
