I rode over to Theodore Roosevelt Island this past saturday, and this friendly little guy tried to come up and greet me. Later in my visit, he tried to come up and sit in my lap.[Edited on May 20, 2012 at 8:12 PM. Reason : s]

Most snake heads are "V" shaped, to some extent...even the harmless ones will flare their jaws out if they feel threatened.

If only I had my concealed weapon on me, I would have been safer...

A four year old relative of mine just got released from the hospital today, mostly recovered from stepping on a young copperhead. She remains unable to walk currently, but everything else is looking up.

I am 100% sure thats a copperhead... I had one with its mouth open posed to bite under my leg back in elementary school. Trust me, if I ever see one, I will try to kill it.
5/20/2012 8:38:54 PM
Little kid at a local daycare got bit by one... The "rumor" going around was that he needed 4 vials of antivenom at $30,000/vial. Anyone know the going rate of antivenom? That number seemed a little exaggerated to me.
5/20/2012 8:40:27 PM
Seems a bit much given how common a snake it is, but I have no idea. Shit, aspirin is like $200/pill at the hospital, so maybe.

^^heres a fun video that may help to clarify

I know the cost depends on the type of snake. But insurance should cover most of the cost.
5/20/2012 8:52:41 PM
apparently not all of them do
5/20/2012 8:53:34 PM
According to this website, it's $150/vial.http://www.sierrapotomac.org/W_Needham/Copperhead_050704.htm

Intensive care is very expensive.

I guess I just have baller insurance. $450 for inpatient hospital stay, zero deductible.[Edited on May 20, 2012 at 9:17 PM. Reason : N]
5/20/2012 9:16:16 PM
in the video I posted above a rattlesnake bite costs them $140,000 out of pocket
5/20/2012 9:24:44 PM
5/20/2012 9:40:52 PM
yeah but that had more to do with 3 days in the ICU then the Antivenom.
5/20/2012 11:29:39 PM
Just suck the venom out and rub some dirt on it.

I have seen only one coral snake in the wild before. It was along the Lumber river on a canoe trip, and was small enough to use a pine cone to wrap around for sunning. Seriously doubt I would worry about its bite even if I were to see another one.
5/21/2012 4:53:08 PM
^ What part of the Lumber? If it was indeed a coral snake that is a pretty significant find.
5/21/2012 6:45:48 PM
well South of Lumberton, just North of Orrum. Had to paddle around to make sure it was actually what we thought we saw at first.
