Driving on I-40 past the the southpoint mall exit, I was traveling in the fast lane. Out of the corner of my eye, in that wedge of land between the highway and where the on-ramp merges on, was a little black kitten wandering about. The speed and the volume of the traffic didn't allow me to get over to the right shoulder any time soon. By the time I could get over I was already a good half-mile away and close to the next exit. So I took the next exit and drove down 54 to loop around. Once I got to the on-ramp where the kitten was I pulled over, got out and started looking around. I didn't see him in the grass and sure enough, there was this little black thing in the on-ramp, just inside the white line near the shoulder. I walked up and sure enough it was the little guy who had just been hit. It wasn't moving but the body didn't look damaged so I had a little bit of hope as I approached the body. As I bent down to look at it, I realized the body was actually fine, but its face had been run over. All I could do was pick the kitten up and toss it over the railing, angrily scream, and get back in the car and drive away.

sorry dawg. I hit a rabbit once and was crushed. not as bad as the rabbit, but it still hurt. chased that fucker down and took it to an emergency vet, where I imagine they just wrung its neck, but at least it didn't have to suffer as long.

I once swerved to miss a squirrel, but ran over him anyway. I looked in the rear view mirror to see him dragging his rear legs off the road just long enough for the car behind me to finish him off.

One time this guy swerved into BHS ...... BHS walked over to look at the body....it was intact but the head was decapitated. He screamed as he tossed the whole car with the body inside over the railing........

One time I backed out over my cat while leaving to get my girlfriend's birthday cake. I jumped out of the car, and saw him just lying on his side. His eyes and mouth were wide open, and his legs kept moving like he was trying to run, even though he was on his side. I sat next to him in the rain and pet him while his legs kept running slower and slower, and after about a minute, he finally stopped moving. It was not the best start to a birthday.

sad thread is sad.when i was in first grade, my dad surprised me with my first puppy - a beagle. we got it from my uncle who had a litter of puppies. anyway, my mom was a teacher at the same elementary school i attended back then, and i naturally would ride with her each morning. I didn't have that puppy a week before mom accidentally backed over it when we were leaving one morning. we tried getting him to the vet, to no avail. i was very upset, but looking back, i feel even worse for my mom.

I made a thread about it, but the other day my cat got hit (by my dad, of course) and was going to lose a leg. They ended up having to put him to sleep. That said, I went to a Bobcats game the season before last, and on my way out of Charlotte I nailed a raccoon or possum going about 80 . Left a notch on my bumper near my fog light

A few years back my neighbor came running over and asked me to come look at a rabbit they had hit with their lawnmower, so I walk over, and she's all "it doesn't look good, but I keep seeing this spark of life, maybe we should take it to the vet"......I take a look, and it's like 85% inside out.

Thanks for the nice words ya'll.It made me remember when I was younger growing up in Buffalo, our washer was inside the house but our dryer was on the back porch. So when we were doing laundry, we'd open the porch door, get the clothes out of the dryer, run inside and dump them on the couch, go back to the washer, grab the clothes and throw them in the dryer, turn it on, close the porch door, and run back inside. When we did this in the winter, we'd try to make it as fast a process as possible cause it was so freakin cold. Well one time, my mom went through this process and came back later to get the clothes out of the dryer and it turns out one of our cats went through the whole dryer cycle in with the clothes. It was nice and warm in there so the cat hopped in in the middle of the whole thing and my mom didn't notice cause it was cold and she was just trying to be fast. It was a mess, fur everywhere. The cat was demolished, all the clothes had to be thrown out, and it took like a month to get the smell out of the dryer. While sad (I felt bad for my mom), it was probably the funniest animal death ever.[Edited on July 15, 2012 at 8:22 PM. Reason : ]

I once tried to catch a golden retriever puppy on 64. As I was trying to catch it I watched a gold buick plow the the little thing over. I remember watching his little floppy ears go limp and I cried the whole way home from greenville.

Pretty typical on small old homes that were originally built without running water. A small room would be built on the back of the house to add a bathroom. The washing machine would end up there because that's where the water supply was located, but people used clotheslines to dry back then. When the dryer became available there was no place to put it, so they ended up on the back porch. You see it a lot in the little houses that surround old mills all over the state.[Edited on July 16, 2012 at 11:19 AM. Reason : l]

I saw the truck in front of me nail a full grown dog right in front of me on gorman. my window was down and I saw the dog get spun around (he got hit in the hindquarters as he was running across the road). he collapsed down and stared right at me howling as I passed by. the guys in the truck put him in the back and took him to a hospital, no idea if he made it. I'll never forget him looking right at me and howling in pain though ]
