death is imminent!

Lightning is produced in thunderstorms when liquid and ice particles above the freezing level collide, and build up large electrical fields in the clouds. Once these electric fields become large enough, a giant "spark" occurs between them (or between them and the ground) like static electricity, reducing the charge separation. The lightning spark can occur between clouds, between the cloud and air, or between the cloud and ground. As long as a thunderstorm continues to produce lightning, you know that the storm still has active updrafts and is still producing precipitation. The temperature inside a lightning bolt can reach 50,000 degrees F, hotter than the surface of the sun. Objects that are struck by lightning can catch on fire, but since the flash is so brief, objects can also show little or no evidence of burning at all.

damn, yeah it is pretty damn constant!

50000F really doesn't mean anything f there's not much mass there
7/28/2012 9:02:25 PM
ITT aaronburro doesn't afraid of lightning
7/28/2012 9:04:24 PM

Let my dog out to pee, she took one look at the sky and went, "FUCK THIS" and ran back in to hide under a blanket

that was fucking awesome

It's stopped :-(

7/28/2012 11:01:04 PM
yes, it has a ton of electrons, but they still don't have that much mass. Meaning even if that shit is at 50000F, there's not enough heat there to really do anything. The heat from lightning isn't going to cause you any problem.
7/28/2012 11:04:23 PM
Unless you're hit by it that's correct.Might singe your hair off if you're really close to it. I have a short video of a crazy electrical storm that was in Greensboro about 5 months ago. Continuous lightening in the clouds for about 30 minutes. Looked like armageddon.
7/28/2012 11:20:55 PM
the heat of lightning doesn't hurt you one bit.
7/28/2012 11:31:40 PM
It could flash burn the parts of you that don't have water in them (arm hair, eyebrows etc.), but for the rest of you that's more or less correct, the heat and the duration of a strike generally isn't enough to cause thermal burns as it takes a lot of time to heat up water (which most of a person is) which causes thermal burn damage.Hurts as much as a haircut. The other effects of several thousand volts however tends to be fatal for direct strikes.]

I was at the Progress Energy Center during this storm....it was pretty awesome and scary to watch from the lobby.Rain coming in sideways and the lightening looked like strobe lights
7/28/2012 11:50:51 PM
drove all the way home from the beach. Hit a storm as we were leaving then we could see the lightnight from New Burn all the way home. It didn't even start raining till we hit Smithfeild.[Edited on July 28, 2012 at 11:58 PM. Reason : fixed?]

7/28/2012 11:52:43 PM
yes it is
7/28/2012 11:54:50 PM
look, folks. It's "lightning." Not "lightening". GET IT RIGHT[/spelling ninja]
