Do jobs check your transcripts to look for GPA? I'm considering lying about it to one.

I didn't post my gpa on my resume...figured if they really cared, they'd ask

written into our code of conduct as grounds for immediate termination, it's very explicit, kinda weird.ie, "falsification of records... including manipulation of grade point average on application for empolyment.. is grounds for immediate dismissal"i know that i found it weird that only after i started was i required to hand in another copy of my resume, transcript, and bring my diplomas in for some photocopying. didn't think anything of it at the time, think it's strange now.it's required for our applications. if it's under a certain point, the resume wont even be accepted. I don't post it but they always ask. I have experience etc. So if I start responding with the number they want to hear are they gonna request a transcript?[Edited on October 19, 2012 at 9:50 AM. Reason : ^ ]

I couldn't even tell an interviewer my GPA if they asked. Guess I've been out of school too long
10/19/2012 9:49:34 AM
Most won't and will not even request a copy of your transcript. They just confirm your degree as part of your background check.
10/19/2012 10:30:56 AM
how do they confirm the degree?iirc, after i started i had to provide a transcript to confirm my degree
10/19/2012 10:32:40 AM
why do companies wait on that? i'd think you would want to confirm all that before the job is even offered.
10/19/2012 10:43:37 AM
Background checks are expensive. Most places assume you are telling the truth, so they wait until after you accept an offer before they confirm stuff.
10/19/2012 10:52:13 AM
^ exactly

i was more referring to having to provide a transcript, i understand about the background check though. like you could immediately weed out anyone being deceitful in that regard by requiring the transcript as part of the application process.[Edited on October 19, 2012 at 10:57 AM. Reason : ]

they did the background check after i accepted the offer and before my first day of work. maybe i'm remembering wrong and i had to mail a sealed transcript to the background check company. i don't really remember.

It varies by company/institution. I have had 3 entry level jobs, and NONE asked for a transcript or GPA and all my offer letters clearly stated that it was contingent on a successful background check which included criminal, education, references, drugs testing, and medical check up.

I don't know what kind of janky background check you're talking aboutyou are wrong
10/19/2012 11:29:46 AM
Haha, ok. Look up any reputable background checker company and you will see they offer ALL the things I just mentioned as part of their services. Tell them that they are lying. For examplehttp://www.selection.com/BackgroundChecks.aspxhttps://www.castlebranch.com/content/services/01_employment_screening/05_verifications/03_educationhttps://fasttrack.talentwise.com/employment-background-check.html?refers=4918&adword=&trackit=264

I'll put it this way:1) NC State does not verify your GPA with anyone without your explicit consent by filling out a transcript request form. 2) I know of an individual who, in desperation and based on the above, went as far as to forge their transcript with photoshop and submitted that to the potential employer. They were hired under the assumption of this GPA and then performed very well within the company and promoted many times over the last decade. However, if it were to get out they would definitely lose that job, regardless of the performance history.
