Bin Laden's terrorist group has been notoriously difficult to get into and plant spies in. They just don't work like other countries do. It only takes a few zealots to pull off something like this and communication is notoriously difficult to get into anymore with the interne and all new technologies we have. So cut them a little slack. They do the best they could, but its not like sneaking around in the Chinese military or Russian military.
