i just pick up a thousand primers here, a box of bullets there, a lb of powder every now and then, grab brass i can use off forums when it pops up for a decent price. eventually you've got a decent stash that will get you through these sort of panic events.

Those guys are really helpful if they know you have zero ammo. I ran into the same problem last week. If you are just looking to buy to increase your stockpile I'm not sure how much luck you will have for a while.

Not trying to derail here (honest) but i keep noticing in my necked rounds that the lighter the bullet, the more powder it takes to "bring it up to snuff" (proportional to the heavier choices for that particular caliber)
I was wondering if there is any physics based reasoning behind this. It would seem to me that the big rounds .300 mags and up use slower burning powder because heavier rounds take longer to accelerate and pressures need to rise at a safer rate to prevent all kinds of problems. That said, I would think that more powder would mean a longer burn and a lighter bullet leaving compression acceleration with powder burn still ongoing, leading to unpredictable burn rates and poor consistency. But the opposite seems to be true in a majority of my lighter loads and also from what I can find online.
Any ideas why this may be?

I'm no expert, but here is my logic.
A 180gr .40s&w bullet is shorter than a 165gr .40s&w (assuming both FMJ, flat nosed, etc... Only difference is in weight)
Assuming you maintain a consistent OAL (over all length) in your reloads between the 180gr and 165gr bullet, you'll have more volume inside the casing with the 165gr. This means reduced cartridge pressure. So to "bring it up to snuff" you add more powder which both occupies more volume as well as add more power.

I don't really know how to address this, however, I believe this is why it's important to try to match your powder's burn speed with the application which the cartridge will be used. I use a fast burning powder to compliment the 3.4" barrel on my Glock 27. If you measure your powder, bullet weight, and overall length consistently, you should observe consistent burn rates and accuracy. Some modifications/tweeks to the original recipe may be needed to accomodate your particular load and firearm combination.

generally speaking, loads that fill more of the case volume tend to be more accurate. that's a very general statement, but if i've got 2 powders to try in a load, i'll pick the one with a max load that fills 95%+ of the case over one with a max load below 90%. powder position in the case has a lot to do with it. more empty space in the case means more variability of the powder's position in relation to the flash hole.
