^^What are you looking to get out of it?

Have any canon people shot the 24-105 f/4L IS? What are you thoughts on it vs. the 24-70 f/2.8 as far as IQ goes? I'd like to have IS on the lower-end of the focal range and would prefer some L-quality glass. 3rd party vendor suggestions would be good too.[Edited on January 19, 2011 at 1:54 PM. Reason : ]

^ possibly selling my 24-105 f/4L, but I have no experience with the 24-70 f/2.8. I have heard rumors of a replacement for the 24-70 coming out soon
1/19/2011 3:28:55 PM
What's the big deal about IS? Why?The 24-70 is a baller lens, and I'd take it over the 24-105 any day of the week, despite the fact that it doesn't have IS. I'd much rather have the extra stop.Fuck all of that, though. Buy fast primes.
1/19/2011 3:32:31 PM
^ IS is pretty awesome with video, walking around with my 24-105 with IS on looks like I'm using a Steadicam
1/19/2011 3:37:03 PM
I'm another that's used the 24-105L but not the 24-70L. I loved it and most people agree that the IQ is pretty much a wash between the two unless you're on a 1D/5D. I did find myself wishing for the 24-70's f/2.8 a few times but overall I enjoyed having the extra range.
1/19/2011 6:37:49 PM
I had both the 24-105 f/4 IS L and 24-70 2.8 F/2.8 L and each have their own strengths and suitable tasks. The 24-70 was my first lens and had it for a long time and love the lens to death. It will always be my most used lens in my line up for general purpose shooting. It's sharp, 2.8, fast focus and a rock solid quality that I have used to smash in someone's face at a club with no ill effects to the lens or camera; maybe some blood cleanup. The 24-105 is a different story since I only had it for about 3/4 of a year before I sold it since I got it in with a trade. I used it primarily for video work and it worked great. I wished I didn't sell it so fast so I could do more video work since the IS in both the 24-105 and 70-200 that I owned at the time was nice, but I couldn't justify having a $900 paper weight for video that I seldom used it for. Besides being one stop slower, it was just as sharp, if not sharper in some cases, and worked well as a general purpose/longer portrait lens. The lens is also lighter and much more compact to carry around than the 2lb 24-70, which is helpful if you need to over extend your arm while holding the camera to get a shot or video of something.Even with the IS and longer range, I ended up just using the 24-70 more for general shooting than the 24-105. Still a big difference between 2.8 and 4, but if I started to do more video, I'd pick up the 24-105, but honestly, you really don't need L quality lens for HD video since the lens resolution of a cheapy IS lens would work like the 28-135 IS, if a cheap stable lens solution is what you are after. After that, you'd need to play around with steady cam systems, which are fun, but daymn I could build some of their stuff for cheap.

picked up a NIB SB-600 flash with bounce (and batteries!) off CL for $100 yesterday not sure if i'll ever use it, though
1/21/2011 8:22:54 AM
Not a bad deal.
1/21/2011 11:06:32 AM
Not just not a bad deal. An incredible deal. I've been happy with my SB-600, but it will tear through some batteries like there's no tomorrow. Go ahead and buy a Costco pack of AA's to carry extras around with it.
1/21/2011 11:19:29 AM
now i need to practice with it, as i have no idea what to do with an "real" flash next time one of those knockoff fong diffusers pop up on slickdeals, i'll pick one up for it
1/21/2011 12:40:36 PM
Well I got an internship with the Miami New Times it seems. Shooting 5+ restaurants a week among other things :O
1/21/2011 1:00:04 PM
Awesome dude. Congrats!
1/21/2011 1:37:38 PM
nice! I might swing down in Miami for spring break, I'll have to hit you up again

Finally got the sigma 30mm, amazon sent another one overnight and I got it this afternoon. What do I do if the other one some how makes it's way here from the bowels of USPS?
1/21/2011 10:17:09 PM
sell it to me for $250
1/21/2011 10:43:36 PM
^^^^^Thanks! Now I just gotta send some food photography samples. I've never really shot food. But they said if I suck at that then they'd teach me or something.
1/22/2011 2:42:04 PM
That's good. Food photography is very difficult from what I hear. It is hard to light it without it looking flat, dry, bad, etc... Best of luck.
1/22/2011 2:42:59 PM
Just ordered the T2i. My crappy contributions to this thread to be posted soon.
1/22/2011 11:22:30 PM
its ok, this is tdub, prepare for some harsh words, extreme flaming, and caps lock. Don't forget the ole Kiwi Crop. :pYeah, Food photog is no joke. I think my assignment for that was a low B because it was just ok since I lost a bit of texture of the dessert and got some pretty real feedback from my instructor and another pro photog that was reviewing our project since he mostly did food/product photog. Although, the best part about food photog is that you get to eat your props 60% of the time. You can't say that about shooting cars... unless its a full size Ferrari cake, which turned out to be an Acura Cake, for your sweet 16 Halloween party...

Looking for some lens advice...I am a total amateur, but am getting inspired by some of the shots in this thread. I mainly shoot candids for church youth group and retreats, but looking to get more artisitic. I shoot a Canon T2i, currently have a Tamron 28-300, and a Tamron 17-50 2.8. I am ready for a new lens. I have been reading forums on these lenses, but wanted to get some feedback from the TWW crew. Tokina 11-16 vs the Tamron 10-24Canon 50, 1.8 vs 1.4I am currrently on page 140 of this thread (late 2009) and am working my way through, just to see the shots and the comments. If these comparisons have been done, I just might not have gotten to the commens yet.
1/25/2011 1:28:41 PM
^ my Canon 50mm 1.8 is still for sale for $75 with tiffen UV filter, like-new condition
1/25/2011 1:58:50 PM
^^If you can afford the 1.4, it is leaps and bounds better than the 1.8. The 1.8 is certainly worth owning if you can't though.Tokina 11-16, hands down. No question. Fuck the Tamron 10-24 variable aperture bullshit. The Tokina is a baller ass lens. Buy it.
1/25/2011 2:23:27 PM
I second that. I absolutely love my tokina 11-16!! Fast and sharp.
1/25/2011 6:33:00 PM
I wished Tokina made some cheap full frame lenses.

I just picked up a T2i and was wondering if anyone could recommend a guide to choosing settings. Kind of overwhelmed here.
1/26/2011 6:58:07 PM
here's a decent n00b guide. i've dabbled in photography before and i know just enough to be dangerous.http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=414088
1/26/2011 7:24:42 PM
that's so true. I stopped going to POTN because everyone was amazed and had a lot of love for pos images from the influx of n00bs. Might as well call it flicker with love. Then people get all mad at you when you speak your mind and give real cc. Never really got why ppl hate getting real cc so much. It's easy to spot flaming and real honest opinion, at least to me.
1/26/2011 9:02:38 PM
Because people don't actually want to learn or get better, they just want their dick stroked.
1/27/2011 9:31:57 AM
1/27/2011 9:43:49 AM
Nothing, but I'd rather it be because I took a great photo than because I'm being coddled.
1/27/2011 9:48:33 AM
well, yeah
1/27/2011 9:57:44 AM
is there anywhere around here that rents the Sigma 30mm 1.4?i wanna try it out before i drop $420 dollar bux
1/27/2011 10:03:59 AM
MAYBE Southeast, but I doubt it.
1/27/2011 10:15:55 AM
SEC doesn't have it, but you can look at lens rentals. Apparently they've revamped their website since the last time I visited. Used them before a few times with good results.http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/canon/lenses/wide-angle/sigma-30mm-f1.4-ex-dc-hsm-for-canonYikes, didn't realize their shipping costs have risen. I guess they went all air shipping. I remember they had some partnerships with some camera shops, at least on the west coast, of where you can rent from them and return for a cheaper shipping cost or non at all. [Edited on January 27, 2011 at 2:58 PM. Reason : yikes!]
1/27/2011 2:56:13 PM
what's the likelihood that someone would load me a good zoom lens for a Nikon D-70 this weekend? This would be with deposit/collateral, and I'll pay you for the rental if you like. I have tickets to the all-star skill competition Saturday night, but I'm up in the 300s. PM me if you can help, or know of a place where I can rent a lens.
1/27/2011 5:37:16 PM
its arrived, and here's proof. just a couple snapshots from looking for something interesting to take a picture of after unpacking. [Edited on January 27, 2011 at 10:06 PM. Reason : hotlinkink?]

anybody here have an interest in a 58mm Fader ND filter?i'm selling mine, need to step up to a larger one
1/28/2011 5:37:44 PM
just prepping for a fashion shoot tomorrow. Two designer friends are loaning me some of their stuff, should be cool, but apparently everyone who I'm working with were very timid in my 13 page production book, detailing the shot, location and sketches of poses I want. I haven't really picked up a camera in like 5 months. Got a nice thin lining of dust on the 1D. heh
1/29/2011 2:46:02 AM
"you're gonna love my nuts"
1/29/2011 10:41:19 AM
should be pulling the trigger on the 7D here soon. as soon as my raise goes into effect.
