No, not a coop. Ive been a CSE for 2 years now. No I mean a group rotation - similar to what the ASE and NCE guys do.

Identify yourself fool ... we are always looking for interested internal people, so that when openings come up we can move them in quick. And if your manager says you cant move, hes full of it. You can move whenever you want, and within 30 days of notification, if the team you are moving to agrees to bring you on. Your manager really doesnt have any say at that point.Did you actually graduate from NCSU?
3/17/2008 8:34:28 PM
check inbox homie^ he told me once if I try to move that he will not recommend me to the hiring manager. cockblocked.[Edited on March 17, 2008 at 8:42 PM. Reason : .]
3/17/2008 8:38:51 PM
That's fucked up.and based on that, I think i know who your manager is.
3/18/2008 8:21:34 AM
Oh Oh Oh PM me...This might be fun!
3/18/2008 8:24:09 AM
Just moved back to the area, and I'll be starting a PhD program somewhere else in the fall, but until August I'm filling my time as a special projects developer for OIT at NCSU. Jack of all trades thing, whatever needs doing--right now I'm going through a bunch of our sites to make sure they can migrate from PHP4 to PHP5 without a hitch and fixing a few other sites as I go. But I'll also be doing general website development, content management, site maintenance, graphic design, training and documentation, or anything else that the short-staffed OIT department needs doing.

Just started today- Network Engineer at Facebook
6/2/2008 11:19:21 PM
i just don't get the exodus of googlers to facebook. i mean, google touches so many aspects of the internet, facebook touches one. what's the attraction? where's the motivation to work for fb?
6/2/2008 11:36:38 PM
because google treats their employees like cattle in a feed lot? Sure you get lots of incentives, but is it really worth 12 hour days?
6/2/2008 11:46:03 PM
ok, i haven't heard too many accounts of employee herding at google, but even if that were true, why so many people leaving for facebook specifically.[Edited on June 2, 2008 at 11:55 PM. Reason : i mean, it's a social network]
6/2/2008 11:55:21 PM
its not so much herding, i've just heard that employees are expected to work pretty long consistent hours and basically become work horses for the company. which works for kids fresh out of school and work-a-holics, but for people with lives outside of work, it's a bit rough[Edited on June 2, 2008 at 11:59 PM. Reason : .]
6/2/2008 11:59:32 PM
^ That seems pretty much East Coast to me.I can tell you that working in NYC isn't much different - whether you're in finance or law or whatever.
6/3/2008 12:05:36 AM
I'd be happy to discuss my reasons off of the board. In summary- there are a TON of brilliant people at Google. For that reason and a slew of others- it can be a pretty tough company to come in and make an impact at. For alot of those people- a smaller more startup like environment is a refreshing change of scenery and pace.
6/3/2008 12:20:50 AM
please fix the application platform. ive been PISSED with the performance of RatPack, which is apparently squarely on the fact that facebook can't handle the load from it's applications
6/3/2008 12:22:52 AM
Unless network is the bottleneck, which I doubt it is, I'm afraid I won't be of much help there. I doubt one app's poor performance could fairly be blamed on platform in general, and I'd imagine if this is something other than an isolated or transient that either the developer or userbase has already brought it to attention of the platform dev team. You're welcome to contact me offboard if you want- this is getting kind of off-topic
6/3/2008 12:28:41 AM
it's not one app, it's defintiely the platform, I just happen to only use a couple of apps on facebook, both of which (and apparently all of them) tend to go to shit during peak traffic times daily.
6/3/2008 12:52:13 AM

6/3/2008 2:04:42 AM
holdin down my own company, security engineer at sas, hustlin on the block
6/3/2008 6:18:15 PM
I'm stuck at the same place. At least I get in and leave on my own schedule with no recourse or action. They need me more than I need them, but it's actually a fun job and work environment.
6/3/2008 10:53:55 PM
cdubya - Need a CCIE at facebook? Thats probably the only company I would leave RTP for.So Noen ... to answer your "platform" qualms ... Ive done apps for facebook, and found that its ALWAYS my hosting that is the real issue. Either insufficient bw during peak times or outages or network issue ... always resolved after hosting changes.Keep in mind that there is a certain expectation from FB regarding response time from apps... If you cannot get your data to them completely within 1-1.5 seconds, then it is likely to timeout (and look like a platform issue). Just a few cents worth from my experience
6/4/2008 7:33:26 AM
^of course, we can always use good help
