Few things in life feel as good as a clean pull on a crab claw.
5/23/2011 1:54:09 PM
LET ME TELL YOU WHYBecause crabs do not have human anatomy and any kind of sexual intercourse between the two species is certain to be uncomfortable for both partners.

growing up my family had a shore house on the Chesapeake right outside Baltimore. we always caught our own crabs, sometimes 10 bushels for a Sunday family feast. here in NC i have seen crabs in markets, but they are usually papershells, or worse, female. crabs were overfished for a bit, and part of the problem was people were not throwing back females. stop eating the females!
5/23/2011 2:40:12 PM
crabs are definitely my favorite food. I don't see what the trouble is.
5/23/2011 3:10:32 PM
OP is a jerk. Crab is awesome.
5/23/2011 3:15:02 PM
I ate a shit ton of crab over the 7.5 years I lived in AK bc you can get king crab for like $8.99/lb on sale. Never used any old bay or other seasoning, and never use any dipping sauce. Shit is ridiculously flavorful, and your meat to work ratio is substantially better with king crab.
5/23/2011 3:18:51 PM
I don't mess with snow crabs anymore. I see people posting up at the chinese buffets just to work their fingers raw on these legs that are no thicker than a pencil. Give me Alaskan King or give me nothing at all.
5/23/2011 3:21:36 PM
I keep reading the title as "crab-fucking sucks" instead of "crab fucking-sucks".
5/23/2011 3:22:34 PM
here's a question:I've had soft shell crabs at restaurants and really enjoyed them. There's an awesome seafood market down the road from me and their sign says they just got in fresh, local soft shells and I think I want to stop by and pick some up on my way home from work. How do you suggest I fry them up?
5/23/2011 3:40:13 PM
you have to clean out the inside first (gills etc.)then cut off the face as in the pic on page 1put a little bit of a 50/50 old bay/flour mix on both sides, then fry it in a skillet with butter, maybe some green onions[Edited on May 23, 2011 at 3:48 PM. Reason : forgot a main ingredient]

I had a few pounds of crab I caught in my crab pots - but they were in the freezer and the power went out -so she threw them all out. It was ok- I don't know how to cook that shit anyways.

^^^ The only thing that makes me sadder than the sight of a dead crab covered in oil is the horrifying thought of not being able to take the long way home in my SUV blasting the AC and listening to satellite radio.
5/23/2011 6:21:08 PM
5/23/2011 6:21:11 PM
^^you can find the same thing at the grocery store. The key is steaming and not BOILING them.
5/23/2011 6:35:22 PM
baking pan + water + crab legs + cover with foil + oven for 10-15 minutes on 400 (or longer if they're not thawed)]
5/23/2011 6:43:03 PM
^ That is the good stuff, but that price is suuuuper high. $34 lb is almost what you pay in a restaurant(In AK, I've never eaten crab outside of the state, may be more expensive).
5/23/2011 8:03:11 PM
stone crab is awesome cause you just steal their claws and toss em back in the water. then they claws grow back!
5/23/2011 8:09:19 PM
they are not the only crab that does this. i know for sure that blue crabs grow back any legs/claws they lose. it was always funny to see one with a full size claw and an imp claw.
5/23/2011 8:50:20 PM
yeah legally you're only supposed to take one of their claws so they can still use one
5/23/2011 8:58:38 PM
sometimes crabs all in a pot will lock claws, and the stronger one rips away the weaker crab's claw. that's baller.

^Yeah...any time we get a crab that is in question we set it aside for a bit...if it moves then we will cook it...but if it's dead...we throw it away
5/24/2011 10:18:54 PM
open it's apron and poke it with one of it's legs. if it's alive, you will know.

for anyone in charlotte who is interested in softshell blue crabs, Clean Catch Fish Market on Selwyn Ave. has them shipped in every Tuesday. they are a little pricey, but a nice treat. the best part is that they come whole (have not been cleaned), thus the juices inside stay intact. they get them from Maryland which is odd, because even Maryland crab houses don't get them from Maryland.i've heard people say things like "I only want my crabs from Maryland" etc... in reality, blue crabs swim all over the East coast and have no idea if they are in Maryland, VA, or NC. so anyone who says shit like that has no idea what they are talking about.they can also get hardshell blue crabs by request

Fried crab...om nom nom nomWhere do I get some in Raleigh?
6/8/2011 2:31:43 PM
I,too, think mating with a crab would not be a pleasant experience.
6/8/2011 2:33:06 PM
^^Earp's seafood, but i don't live in Raleigh so i have no idea if they are still in business after losing their roof during the tornado]

Middle of the island's crab omlet used to be the best thing ever. It had more than an entire snow crab worth of meat in it (probably 2 or 3) and tasted a friggin mazing.[Edited on June 8, 2011 at 2:36 PM. Reason : .]
