If I didn't genuinely like a fairly hard core conservative friend of mine I'd be loving me some shadenfreude. Dude was a history major and has spent his post college years working as a type of curator for a history museum that is getting its funding cut and he is going to be out of a job.I've been really tempted to tell him "this is exactly what you have been asking for" but he has a wife, kid, and just bought a new house so ultimately I feel real bad for the guy.[Edited on July 9, 2011 at 11:45 AM. So many Republicans (extreme or not) like to claim to be "God-fearing," but isn't it the Godly (and Christian) way to help those less fortunate? Or have I been reading a different Bible?FTR, I'm not an overly religious person... but I don't have to be to notice some serious hypocrisy when I see it.
9/30/2011 12:49:38 AM
^yes. But we don't believe in forcing someone to help someone via taxes. We believe in having the choice to ignore them.People are also real quick to ignore the work that is being done by a persons tithe. A significant portion of that money (particularly in the UMC) is used for mission work. They support missions in every country on the planet. You'll also notice that in any disaster the first ones to arrive are the christians, and the last to leave are the christians. We were repairing roofing and counseling victims before government managed to get some funding approved after the recent tornadoes. And you'll find that there are more church-sponsored people on the ground in Haiti than from any government.

I clearly don't understand the hatred for Conservatives. Why is it such a bad thing that we want people to better themselves? That we feel that we worked hard to get what little we've got, and we don't want it going to those who have made poor decisions and are unwilling to better their situation?Somebody is going to come back and give me some statistics of how few people are actually receiving entitlements, but you can't argue about the increasing number of people getting gov't assistance now, from food stamps to EBT to unemployment. I'm not arguing that the other side is bad, I'm just wondering why they think we're so bad. I'm not rich - far from it. I just see anecdotal evidence that entitlements aren't working. When someone in front of me pays for some of their groceries with an EBT card, while talking on a Blackberry that costs at least $30/month. When I got laid off? What was the first thing to go? The fancy cell phone. We lived off of our savings until the very last couple of weeks, then finally went on unemployment - we used it for what it is, a safety net. I then got another job several weeks after having to go on welfare. My wife gets several calls a week wanting people to have her vouch that they were looking for a job. When she told them they were hiring, they usually say "thats ok, I don't want a job, I just need to do this for unemployment." How can we swallow that?It all comes down to personal accountability. What is so bad about that?
5/14/2012 10:57:18 PM
I don't think it's Conservatives that people hate, it's Republicans. There's a difference between wanting personal accountability and just displaying a cold shoulder when help is truly needed. There are those in the movement who feel that entitlement programs should altogether be removed(disability related as well) but the military somehow has a strange hypocritical exemption. I'm all for personal responsibility, but there has to be a point where assistance is allowed. And a cut-off date for that assistance. And *real* auditing.I guess what I'm saying is being an extreme right winger doesn't make any more sense for the betterment of society as a whole (just the betterment of individuals) than being an extreme left winger, and those are the people most hated. Not rational conservatives.

I think unemployment should have a ramping down period. Like you get x amt of weeks at full benefit to try to find a full time job. Then a 90 day run down period begins where the payment drops a little bit every week but you can work any job you like (temp, part time, full time, etc) and not have to lose the remaining weeks of pay. I think most people are scared to accept temporary or part time work because they do not want to lose their benefits, this is ass backward because those jobs often lead to more permanent opportunities. You can't really blame someone for not wanting to take some unsteady work if it will be a pay cut from his guaranteed unemployment payout.[Edited on May 15, 2012 at 12:41 AM. Reason : .]
