See this is th exact thing in which I lose faith in humanity. Anyone with a brain realizes this kind of chant is, if not racist, severely lacking in class. I'm not sure what malfunction in the human brain needs to be present to not understand that just because you don't say nigger or spic no one will react.I don't think anything needs to be done about it per se in this case but if you don't understand the tone of the chant you're a god damned moron.

Ha, Alamo Heights definitely has some minorities (it is a public school) but this doesn't surprise me in the least. The neighborhood that goes to that school has a lot of old money and house prices are ridiculously high just because of the neighborhood.

This makes more sense now. The losing school was primarily hispanic population. So, this wasn't so much as racist as it was...uh, anti-national origin.
3/7/2012 2:39:37 PM
Taken in that context, yes it's not racist. But when you add in the fact that most of the people chanting USA were white, it takes on a pretty racist tone.It implies that if you're not white you're not American. Probably a little bit nationalist with a sprinkle of racism for good measure.[Edited on March 7, 2012 at 2:42 PM. Reason : ]

Even if they're chanting "USA USA USA" because of patriotism, it's not technically correct because the other high school students are also Americans, even if they're minorities. If you see nothing wrong with this then it means you see nothing wrong with considering minorities to be less American than whites, which is racist.
3/7/2012 2:45:09 PM
^^^ so you've completely changed your position?did you not read the article before you posted it?
3/7/2012 2:47:43 PM
I'll be honest, I assumed that the "minority" team was black. And, in that context, it would have made no sense. The article doesn't mention what race or national origin the opposing team was.But yeah brah, you got me! Nice work. I didn't really take a position with the original post, though. I just didn't understand.[Edited on March 7, 2012 at 2:51 PM. Reason : ]

So the next time we play against the Toronto Maple Leafs if I start chanting "USA USA USA", am I racist too?
3/7/2012 2:54:34 PM
no, but if you comment about how their mouths aren't connected to the rest of their heads, you most certainly are a racist
3/7/2012 2:55:15 PM
If you see nothing wrong with this then it means you see nothing wrong with considering minorities non-Germans to be less American superior than whites, which is racist. ]

^^>defining citizenship based on race>citizenship based on race>based on race>raceracism.
3/7/2012 3:01:50 PM
not so much. racism comes into play when there is a belief of superiority/inferiority that is based on race. Something simply being based on race is not necessarily racism.
3/7/2012 3:07:36 PM
In a technical term, yes it is. In popular usage, it is not. Depends on who your audience is as to how much either one makes sense.
3/7/2012 3:13:56 PM
I'm sure chants at sporting events are done to show belief of superiority/inferiority?Either way, none of the officials called it racist, they just called it racially inflammatory or something. The only person who called it racist was the reporter. The school officials did the right thing. There's trashtalking all the time in pro sports and that's fine and just adds to the entertainment, but schools should teach respect and good sportsmanship, so that's why the administration did what they did. maybe banning the kids from all games was a bit harsh, but I was just confused why some people thought the school admin was wrong in punishing the students period.
3/7/2012 3:14:14 PM
Am I a racist for lamenting how you white people stole our land after killing off 90% of my people with your European diseases?
3/7/2012 3:14:38 PM
they banned the kids from seeing games, where maybe they could have learned a little sensitivity or humility. instead of sending the kids to some week long diversity session *giggle*, they banned them from going to games, which just has the net effect of making the students be more resentful towards people who are different from them^ nah, you're just a sore loser[Edited on March 7, 2012 at 3:16 PM. 3/7/2012 3:16:18 PM
It's harsh, but hopefully they learn a lesson in addition to their resentment.
3/7/2012 3:18:13 PM
nah. they'll just be resentful.
3/7/2012 3:18:55 PM
Haha. Aww. I suppose I'll just relegate myself to living in amongst my trees on my mountain until more white folks come along and decide to blow it up for whatever minerals may be inside.
3/7/2012 3:19:47 PM
The most surprising thing to me is that a basketball team made of mostly white players won a game in convincing fashionah fuck, that was a racist comment

Man, I should have read that article better. So most of the kids that go to that school that lost are of Mexican decent? I can definitely see how that is wrong and racist in nature. It is also sad that it happened once before with two other schools.
3/7/2012 4:27:13 PM
It's their own fault for not integrating faster to American culture. They really should be viewing the chants as something to aspire to. What's more inspirational than to know you can one day be part of a mob of Americans being racially insensitive?
3/7/2012 6:13:57 PM

ummm. they were all white. in a high school basketball game. chanting USA USA USA at a bunch of hispanic people from a high school 4 miles down the road. what the fuck would YOU call it? I can't ever recall even wanting to chant USA USA USA at a high school sports game. Olympics it makes sense, you're talking about countries there. A team from across town in the same fucking country? Get out of here
3/7/2012 8:51:24 PM
OMG! You are so right! holy shit! Yer an idiot.
3/7/2012 8:57:52 PM
So they were chanting USA at another group of Americans. How is that racist?
3/7/2012 8:59:19 PM
i wouldn't say it's racist, though others might disagree. but it was certainly meant as an insult. A group of entirely white people, at a high school basketball game with a school 4 miles away in America, chanting USA USA USA at a group of hispanic players. You tell me what the intent of chanting USA USA USA was. You tell me why a chant of national origin would come into play at a high school basketball game where both teams are from the same country. You tell me what a chant would be done by whites towards hispanics, in Texas. Give me an alternative explanation to "they were doing it to be insulting"[Edited on March 7, 2012 at 9:05 PM. Reason : ]

If there is a rational alternative, why don't you tell us what it is. Surely if it's so obvious to you, you can tell me what they were trying to accomplish
