Another example of union shitheadedness, courtesy of Hurricane Sandy. Heard this one from a relative in Jersey. So a few days after the storm, hundreds of thousands in northern NJ were still without power. The power crews were working overtime. Of course, crews from many other states headed north to help out. So a convoy from somewhere in the south--Alabama maybe?--gets directed to northern NJ. When they get there to *volunteer* their services, the crews from NJ immediately file a complaint. The union boss tells the volunteer crews that they can't work in that region because they're not unionized. Even though they weren't going to be paid, they still were told to leave because the contracts with the power companies say non-union workers cannot under any circumstances work on the power infrastructure. So the volunteer crews left and went somewhere their services were wanted, and many people in the region (my aunt being one of them) were without power for something like 10 days.Enough to make your blood boil.

in the follow-up to that mostly-rumor news story the utility compnany said they could use any help offered and while some people might have complained the contractors from Alabama weren't turned away

nah, let's just hate unions because the election's over and we have no one else to hate at the momentbesides, unions only exist to rape children

^ if they didn't want to be $20/hour workers, they should have been CEOs

My heart bleeds for people making 40k per year to watch the twinkie machine run.

im sure they had an amphitheather where people were paid to watch this machine

Ahh yes, the baker's union, you know because every fucking twinkie was lovingly baked by a grandma, not cranked out by large batch machines on an assembly line.Sorry, but it's unskilled labor that could literally be done by anyone with about a day of training. I don't feel bad for the company for going under, or for unionized employees losing their jobs. It's sort of like cashiers being unionized. You have no leverage without any actual skill. It's laughable that they threaten with strikes like they're irreplaceable.

Sounds like being a CEO at Hostess required less skill than being a baker.[Edited on December 1, 2012 at 9:15 PM. Reason : .]

I mean, they certainly did a shit job, I don't think anyone would argue differently.

I think we can all agree that Hostess was mismanaged. That said, when the Teamsters publicly state that the Bakers Union leadership misled their members and their actions drove the company to liquidate, you should probably listen.http://www.teamster.org/content/teamsters-bakery-workers-should-hold-secret-ballot-vote-hostess
