The tldr; is Vance critiques libertarianism in what amounts to “but think of the children!!1!1!” It’s not exactly new for culture warriors to get uptight about capitalists trying to sell stuff to kids, but I think Vance’s continued emphasis on the “family” signals a change in American conservatism.

The simplest way I’ve seen it explained was look at how the apocalypse has morphed for American conservatism. It was always “The debt and deficit mean China will own is sooooooon!!!!!!!!”Basically financial fear mongering and a good reason to shrink government. Now the apocalypse is some combination of death of the nuclear family, immigration, and a loss of their preferred hierarchies. At the extremes it’s essentially just “the Great Replacement” theory.

For libertarian leaning conservatives I think you should take a long look at what folks in this group are proposing. They have NO qualms about flexing government power to achieve the outcomes they prefer. Unless you have a white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and attend church every Sunday, you’re going to get caught up in their plans

He totally won that Face the Nation interview. The interviewer had good questions but she let herself get walked over by his responses, and just kept on shooting back stuff from some factsheet she may have had prepared instead of calling out any actual BS. Yes, we know that FEMA was working with the states, how does that directly address Vance's wild claims? The funny thing is MAGA guys acting as if this were some crazy interrogation, where it was just some pointed questions that Vance dismantled rhetorically without proper pushback. Some of their brains are so slow that they perceive people talking fast as an argument (and relating to that, I have to say that this was far more watchable than Kamala Harris's interviews... she drones on and on and talks ever so slowly)

She kept trying to gotcha him on some of the outrageous stuff instead of addressing what actually made it outrageous. This is why Democrats lose, now she's a reporter, but the same principle applies outside of this
