They've revised their statement. Two minutes ago they said that dogs had confirmed that there was a bomb in there, now they're calling it a threat...

Small note. They just released another projection coming from FOX - they are estimating 20,000-30,000 victims. That's pretty much the student body of NCSU, if you need a comparison.

As for the dead, I'm skeptical that the death toll will eclipse 10,000. Even Guiliani said they're estimates are "in the thousands", not "in the tens of thousands"...of course either way that's still a heckuvalot of people who lost their lives

And as for current news, the above-mentioned collapse of One Liberty Plaza, and the danger of collapse of nearby buildings, has practically halted rescue efforts:

there were only 20,000 people in the WTC when it was hit. It seems like a good number of people were able to evacuate, so I don't think the death toll will be close to that figure.

when did parts of One Liberty Plaza collapse? Before I left to grab some dinner, on CNN they were saying that they thought it was going to collapse due to a bad surveying job, but then they retracted it and stated that the building was safe. (when the surveyer was doing his stuff, he was using one of the remaining WTC buildings as a baseline, and stated that one liberty was tilted, when in fact it was the base line building was tilted, rather then one liberty)

they just talked about ComDisco (#1 in the country, possibly the world, at data recovery) helping recover. my dad works for them, and they were going thru some really bad times (just bought by Hewlett Packard, stock diving, layoffs...). hopefully this will help them and secure my dad's job better...

they are investigating two brothers from FLA who were flight trained and were on the flight that hit the WTC... also, 7 of the tickets of the hijackers were bought with one credit card...

they have a partial transcript of what happened in one cockpit (pilot switched mic on...)

basically:

" get out! "
mic cuts out briefly, then comes back on...
"Get out! Get out of here!"

pilot is now no longer in the cockpit. voice on radio to address passengers, speaking in broken english with an arabic accent:
"there is a bomb on board. this is your captain speaking. there is a bomb on board, we are meeting their demands. we are returning to the airport."

this obviously wasnt the captain, but the terrorist lying to the passengers so they wouldnt know what was going on...

the hijackers also were saying "we have more planes, we have more planes" over the radio. and the pilots didnt' key in the 4-digit code for "terrorist take-over", which would have only taken seconds...so it means they killed the pilots and took over the planes

a passenger said on cell phone that the men on board voted to overthrow the hijackers...must have heard about the NYC thing...shortly after that call, the plane went down in rural PA.

yeah, the guy that called his wife, she told him about the WTC. then they said they were gonna do something and it crashed in the woods. i'm pretty sure the other planes knew they were being hijacked though, some of them made cell phone calls home and said stewardesses were dead and they were all haorded to the back of the plane.

yeah, but the other flights' passengers thought it was a typical hijacking...make some demands, land, let people off, negotiate an ending...they had no idea this was going to happen...after the 1st two planes hit, the guy on the cell heard what was going on...the men on the flight figured out that this was what their plane was for...so they jumped the hijackers and brought the plane down before it could screw anything up...

these were brave men. these heroes prevented this massive tragedy from being even worse.
