Awesome. I've been meaning to check out the audiobooks; I have heard they are very well done.
I'll probably listen to the audio for Book 3 and 4 before I read 5 (whenever he releases it of course...)

i've listened to "an" audiobook for ACOK, it was this the old dude with a british accent that tried really hard to do the different voices and it ended up sounding really amusing. only problem i had was that he went way too slow. i think it took him 5-6 minutes to read each page. 1/27/2011 2:51:15 PM |

i feel like sean bean is a bit wasted on eddard stark ... but then again that could be said for just about every character in the books, given their ... tenuous life expectancy 1/31/2011 8:16:07 PM |

please, at least attempt to hold the spoilers in this thread (especially huge ones like that) since some people watching it haven't read the books That was kind of the point of creating this separate thread vs the other thread on the books.
I know a lot of people watching this will have read the books and are watching it just for the adaptation but I have several friends who are excited to watch who have no idea about that ^.

i am one of these watching without any prior knowledge of the series. I have not been following this thread closely, but I will be once the series begins. Please keep this as spoiler free as possible, especially spoilers from the text. If you need to discuss them I suggest using warnings and spacing that even a noob can't miss.2/1/2011 8:19:26 AM |

Yeah, you really, really should remove that....it's a dick move.
Discuss it in a book thread or something. This is for people watching the show, of which a large portion haven't read it. 2/1/2011 10:26:14 AM |

maybe a mod can edit BigT716's post to at least put big spoiler tags
Since the show is getting closer to airing, I'll go ahead and repost this from the first page:
Quote : | "As stated by Jeepin4x4, for those of us who have read the books, lets try to keep this thread completely spoiler free. Especially keep that in mind when the show is actually airing (which I do know is a long ways off) and people ask questions.
Try and keep the scope of your answer in line with the scope of what has been revealed in the story so far. One of the best parts about this series is all the twists, reveals, and interconnectedness of the plot and I'd like to try and not ruin that for newcomers. That being said, it can be a confusing story (and we'll see how they handle it on the screen when things can't be spelled out as well sometimes) and people might have questions for sure. We can try and keep the other thread related to discussion on the books and discussion of more spoil-worthy material I think " |
For people that have read the books: If people who have not read the books have any questions about something in season 1 and post them here (which I suspect will happen), think about your answer before you post it. Make sure it doesn't contain any spoilers related to what you already know to be true in future books and try to keep the answer only based on what has been shown or is known so far.
For any more in-depth questions about the books or discussions on later parts of the series which definitely contain spoilers we do have this thread where people have been speculating future parts of the story arcs and is a fairly spoiler-ridden discussion amongst people who have read the book:
message_topic.aspx?topic=571882&page=1
In an ideal world, that thread would get retitled to "Song of Ice and Fire" from the current title of "Song of Fire and Ice on HBO"
If anyone has questions on stuff they don't want to post here, a good reference site is:
http://www.towerofthehand.com/
That site lets you adjust your "scope" to avoid spoilers. It is really only advisable to use after you have completed at least 1 book / 1 season due to the fact that the narrowest scope you can choose includes all events of Game of Thrones (aka book 1/season 1), but it is definitely very helpful during later books as a companion if you need to remember something or are confused by anything.

A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12.
The manuscript is huge — the publisher estimates the hardcover edition will run more than 900 pages, putting it about the same length as the longest book in the series, A Storm of Swords. Schedule your summer vacation accordingly.

CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
Well yeah I have taken every other date with a grain of salt until now. The other dates never seemed to be very concrete to me though. Just placeholder/dreamer dates if you will. Correct me if I'm wrong but I never saw dates in any real news announcement previously.
This was a joint announcement between the publisher, Martin, and Entertainment Weekly. In other words, they made a big deal about this as opposed to some random date he posts on his blog or a date that Amazon lists on their site. The British publisher Voyager has also given a firm release date as well.
http://shelf-life.ew.com/2011/03/03/dance-with-dragons-date/
There is of course some risk there with the timing of the announcement and the status of the writing but I would have to think the publisher wouldn't want to make fools of themselves by getting him out there to promote a firm date if they weren't sure it was going to be met. I'm obviously being optimistic, but this is the first time I've actually let myself get optimistic that it is really getting published soon. Hopefully I'm not proven wrong...

^That's what I did too. The "reward" was awesome Although now I'm trying to swear off watching anymore footage before the premier because I've been following the production for so long and seen so much of the trailer footage that I don't want to spoil too much haha.
Everything I have seen though is just great. We'll see how it all comes together for full episodes but I have been extremely impressed with the footage overall. Everything has really looked very close to what I imagined in my head, minus Kings Landing which looks very different than how I imagined but should still be awesome. 3/7/2011 7:56:23 AM |

The best part is that there is very little magic.
There are waaaaaaaay too many long-running fantasy series where the main character accumulates more and more magical powers until he is godlike and unstoppable. It's a shitty pattern that everyone copies because everyone keeps buying the books.
There are so many fantasy cliches than need to die. 3/7/2011 7:32:30 PM |

^You're wrong, but it's not worth getting in to a nerd slap fight about it. Goodkind, Jordan, Orson Scott Cart, and I assume the vast majority of other writers employ the same tactics.
The bottom line is the fat fuck GRRM's world should be appreciated for the near absence of magic. 3/8/2011 7:32:38 PM |

^ It's true. ASOIAF is the first fantasy series of any kind for me, so of course there were things I was expecting based on fantasy stereotypes.
The absence of magic is so complete that when something magical or supernatural or extraordinary DID happen, it was very jarring and unexpected for me.
