They'd have to add some completely unnecessary scene to make that work with the story thus far. It would be pointless and when they are already having to condense so much and be very efficient with what they show on screen it'd be even more pointless. There is plenty of stuff in the book they can expand on or visualize with characters to get some nudity in there. 3/21/2011 6:34:32 PM |

Look, I know you're trying to be a cute smart-ass but I think you need to step being and realize that you are the one with reading comprehension ftl atm.
The scope of this thread is the first book/the first season of the show (and at this point just big picture items since it hasn't even started airing). We are making an attempt to talk about the FIRST season and avoid plot spoilers 3 thousand pages from where this TV show is currently at (considering the first episode hasn't even aired yet) for new fans or viewers of the series. These fans include people who have read very little to none of the books.
I know it's hard to avoid answering questions that people ask without giving the future away (not being sarcastic here), but don't try and call other people out for not "recalling" or "comprehending" what they read.

shouldn't you be over on patrick rothfuss's blog, furiously beating off to his every word? Who gives a fuck about spoiling the show for people? The first book has been out for more than a decade...
There is plenty of nudity in the first book.
Cersei in one of her first scenes Catelyn in one of her first scenes etc
there is no need to enlarge the opportunities for nudity in Martin's writing. I think the real problem will be a few seasons away.

Hey retard, this is about the first season. Sansa doesn't do anything requiring her to get naked in A GAME OF THRONES. Reading comprehension of the thread title FTW.
And there's another thread for discussion of the series in general, this is about the show.
You won't spoil anything for me but not everyone has read the books or cares to read the books at this point.

flatline: Way to backpedal. Of course there is plenty of nudity or opportunities for nudity in the first book; anyone who read the books knows this. The only opposition came saying that there is no need for Sansa to have a nude scene (besides the actress is like 14....)
As far as rothfuss wtf are you talking about? I really liked the first book but jesus, he's not even close to an author who I would hang on to his every word. So fantasize about whatever you want but leave me out of it.
And finally,
Quote : | "spoiling the show for people? The first book has been out for more than a decade..." |
Notice any continuity errors there? As AndyMac said, there is a separate thread we have decided could be used for discussion on the books on TWW and this thread was made specifically to avoid spoilers for the tv show since there are a lot of new interested people who have not read any or all of the books who will be watching this show (I know plenty). It was stated that this thread should be kept spoiler-free except what has been revealed in the show probably about a dozen times over the first 4 pages of this thread. I'm surprised your uber reading comprehension skills missed that.

This season completely covers the first book. They also expect season 2 to entirely cover Clash of Kings. The first debate for a season != a single book is really Storm of Swords which they mentioned briefly might need to be two or at least more than 10 episodes (no serious discussion on that this early of course though).

1 GRRM is a experienced screenwriter. He is not writing a majority off the episodes however. Sftu 2 Are you a fucking idiot? The story is based on his novels, and at current pace, he will take, assuming this one is published this year, another five years (if you even count this book as it contains half the plot of book 4, which would make it eight years to publish the full book). Maybe you can comprehend the temporal problems associated with annual seasons and his current pace... 3/24/2011 5:39:07 PM |

probably by season 4 or season 5 the plot is going to deviate away from the books so that HBO can control where the show goes from there. i highly doubt they'll wait on his fat ass to finish #6. 3/24/2011 6:15:14 PM |

1st the signed copy of The Wise Man's Fear was a gift and was purchased because it supported a charity. I also purchased other books and gave money to the charity directly as well. I simply mentioned that specific book in the thread it was applicable in. The only reason I paid 2x more than the regular hardcover was because it was a gift and it went to charity. I collect hardcover books. Sue me.
2nd yes, when I have read his blog it was always pretty humorous. How often do I read his blog? maybe once or twice a week on my phone. It is in one of my RSS stream widgets with about 15 other literary or author related blogs. I guess I slob all over each of them too? And all of the other entertainment blogs I read. Once again I mentioned his blog specifically in a thread dedicated to his book.
I liked his book but let's put some perspective on it. I give him props for an author's first real published book; It was a really fun read that I have recommended to several people even if a bit juvenile. I haven't even cracked the first page on the 2nd book yet and have several other books lined up before I get to that. But sure, post-stalk me some more and try and paint whatever picture you want to with my words; your ignorance and teen angst is rather humorous. Just keep the spoilers to yourself.

Once again just based on some banter since they haven't been talking that far out, but they mentioned doing SoS over 2 seasons. So you're still talking 5 years from now before a season based on Book 6 will be around. Obviously he has been slow writing this, but at the time they were filming for season 6, even if he took this extremely slow 5 year pace, he would probably have the majority of the next book finished storyline-wise even if it wasn't ready to be published.
Also, he has worked closely with the writiers and the producers so that they know a lot of where the story is headed so they portray things right early on/so nothing they show contradicts with where he is taking it later.
IF the show was successful enough to fund and film for the entire duration, will they catch up to him? I think definitely by the last book. But I don't know that their ending would be that much different. Just depends on how much Martin stays involved.

yeah, typically I get hardcover signed books from authors I like... CalledtoJerkOff though, he gets two signed books FOR CHARITY PEOPLE, AND its not even that good!!!!
Quote : | "I liked his book but let's put some perspective on it. I give him props for an author's first real published book; It was a really fun read that I have recommended to several people even if a bit juvenile." |
So why are you going to his blog "once or twice a week" and giving money to his charities? I typically shelve a shitty book and try not to read another book by the author. I laughed out loud when reading your admission of reading his blog multiple times a week...
I could not give a fuck less, but I find: 1) your rampant fanboism annoying; 2) your denial of the already documented fanboism hilarious.
Really, though, I use this example to question your judgment when it comes to GRRM's writing/series.

First, it took him six years to write the "forthcoming" book. Why would he suddenly accelerate pace? He was writing only half of the characters and it took him six years...Kind of like your friend Rothfuss who supposedly had his trilogy "already written and ready to publish in yearly intervals."
Second, who is going to buy the books after seeing the series continue to fall into flames? (which it will.) The fucker is a writer, do you really think he is going to let the television show outstrip the books?
Quote : | "uh...do you think he's writing the episodes?" |

Martin did lots of rewrites on his forthcoming book. He certainly can write them faster, the first 3 were only two years apart.
Besides, HBO can shelve the series for a year or two like the did with Sopranos if he's not finished with the books. 3/25/2011 1:04:51 AM |

^hopefully what I have heard so far is true: Both GRRM (who was actually consulted a good amount on story/script) and the early reviews by superfans who have gotten to see some scripts and an early episode or two (people that run some of the more popular ASOIAF/GOT websites) have said that the adaptation in season 1 should hold true to the source.
The consensus so far is that normal necessary "changes" were made to dialogue and some scenes added or removed due to the fact that TV is a different medium than literature and they do have some time constraints (though even less than something like LOTR had).
Some people may be more of a purist than I am, but if the reports I have read so far are true the story should keep me pretty happy. I definitely understand certain things needed to be reworked and even GRRM purposely wanted some things to be slightly changed. 4/4/2011 8:57:22 AM |

Not to take anything away from The Lord of the Rings and its contribution (read: pretty much the creation of) to the Fantasy genre, but the movie was infinitely more entertaining than the novels. Given the quality and readability of the first several books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, you owe it to yourself to read them whether the TV series works or it doesn't. 4/9/2011 9:48:42 PM |

The story is still in the books for LOTR. The problem with the books is that Tolkein wrote them as a linguist and a historian as opposed to a story teller, and yes that does make them difficult to read. ASOIF is pure drama/storytelling gold. 4/10/2011 11:50:52 AM |

LOTR books may have been the start, but they are nowhere near the best. And the movies aren't that good, either. Just standard action movies.
But scifi fans have really low standards and will consume anything from the genre, so they are pretty popular. 4/10/2011 12:14:38 PM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
I think it depends. There are certainly a lot of fantasy and scifi fans that are like that, but I know plenty who aren't as well.
Even though I enjoy it, I am extremely picky when it comes to fantasy stuff. I can't even count the number of series I have gotten 1 to 2 books into and given up on - even series that are well known/supposed to be good.
Either way I don't think that low standards have anything to do with people enjoying the LOTR movies. They were well-made for a screen adaptation even if they didn't do the books complete justice. Maybe slightly overrated and there were certainly things I would have done different, but they are also far from being "standard action movies."
