is that necessarily a problem though? I like the idea of the professor posting the lecture early and using class time as a Q&A although that's really what recitation should be, but still not a bad gig.

If students don't attend class, that's their prerogative. If they never once attend a class and show up on exam day and ace the test because they've used the online lectures and studied hard on their own, I say good job. And if they fail because they didn't do shit, that's certainly not the professor's fault. Perhaps in the long run we might see some sections combined reducing the number of total lectures, but this is already being done currently due to budget restraints and it certainly is not causing any tenured professors to lose their jobs.

Idk, when I heard the professor say that the other day it irked me a little cause it showed to me that he was placing more priority over protecting himself than he was trying to educate his students. I'm not some crazy idealist by any means, but I found his logic to be foolish. This is especially so with professors who are not exactly the best lecturers. Sometimes they need to see themselves teach so they can realize how bad they are.

I subscribe to his line of thinking.

Dr. Warren: Please fix the state of teaching in NC schools beginning with NC State. I hear the textile department is fantastic (IIRC, that's who you mostly work with right?). Please make other majors as good.

LOL. I love when people get corrected and resort to the "oh well I was wrong...but boy it sounds like I sure hit a nerve their buddy!" to try and get some dig in as if the person they were arguing with was supposed to sit back and let the accuser make false, uninformed claims and not correct them.

if I'm wrong, I usually stop going to the thread and let it die or just start talking random shit to confuse and change the subject to make it even more awkward. But the simple fact is that I don't care in bout 99% of the cases.

This works in real life too, explains why I'm single.

And I use "hookers and blow" in daily conversations.

I was going to let this die...
Given that Warren is the only person in the Chemistry department with the title "Teaching Assistant Professor" I am somewhat skeptical of his claims of it being the "natural progression". Also his apparent sensitivity on the issue seems to indicate otherwise.

Of course maybe all the hookers at state are teaching assistant professors so that they can afford their blow.

Attendance policies are allowing unmotivated people (who have no business being in college to begin with) muddle through and get their degrees. If you are too stupid to realize when you need to go to class you should fail. It probably all comes down to parents bitching when little Jimmy fails his first semester because he didn't go to class.

"joie i was talking to an NC State professor the other day and he was against having any of his classes videotaped. He tried to say that if the classes were all videotaped he would be out of a job. I lol'd at his thinking. If you really want to educate your students you should make an effort to provide as many tools to them as is reasonable, and in this generation, videotaping a class for online use is about as easy as writing a thank you card in the 1950's"

Dr Petty (a micro/virology professor) had a simple solution to this. Show up to class and you access to online materials for you to review. And if you missed it for a legit reason, he would open up the recordings for you. And about 3 days before the final, he opened up everything for everyone, so if you needed clarification on a lecture, you could go back and get it. But it kept people from skipping class, and I do feel you get more from being there in the class than watching it in bed on your laptop with wheel of fortune in the background. While a quirky little guy, I liked him as a professor, and I like his methods.

Yeah i passed ST371 with a B+ going to class the first day, the two test days and on the final. Sure that class is easy but if i had taken it with another professor there would've been an attendance policy.

i've been on both sides.
i remember a class or two in undergrad that i thought was so incredibly easy and i'm sure i missed more than 50-60% of the days, but i made like an A or a B.
and then i distinctly remember psych 101. attendance policy. i had to go and it pissed me off so much. i feel asleep soooo many times in that class (8 am-er) and if i'm not mistaken i had like a 98 average (or 96 something along those lines). and honestly, i couldn't pay attention....for some reason the stuff came VERY naturally and everything he taught was a "no brainer" for me.
and i just remember thinking...i'm old enough to decided whether i wanna go or not. why are they making me

i, too, did this but got an A. i really don't know why that class is required, its stuff you learned in high school plus maybe a couple new equations.

That is the natural progression in the Chemistry Department (as at any major university program) - look at the Faculty listing again and you will see (outside of the Assistant Prof, Associate Prof, Prof, Prof Emeritus) listings of Lecturer, Teaching Assistant Professor, and Teaching Associate Professor.

The non-tenure track faculty line has a seniority ladder just like tenure track

Dr. Warren is a great teacher, I TA'ed for him one or two years in Grad School.

I didn't hate Warren or CH 201

I simply hated that, as a ZO major, I had to take CH 201.

My point about the attendance policy was an explanation as to why it was there. If you can pass a class without going to it you shouldn't have to attend it obviously.

TWW is about the only place where you could ever be as terrible as Warren and still have a fan club. Finally a place where he fits in I guess...

"Herp" is a vernacular term for reptiles and amphibians. It is derived from the old term "herpetile", with roots back to Linnaeus' classification of animals in which he grouped reptiles & amphibians together in the same class. There are over 6700 species of amphibians [1], and over 8000 species of reptiles. In spite of its modern taxonomic irrelevance, the term has persisted, particularly in the names of herpetology (the scientific study of reptiles & amphibians) and herpetoculture (the captive care & breeding of reptiles & amphibians).

I never took Dr. Warren's class. I took Sandberg for 101 and loved her so much, I went with her for 201. Such an amazing woman.

I was told to avoid Warren :-/ While I don't regret having Sandberg as my Chem Prof, I probably wouldn't have been so anti Warren if I knew he was down with Silver Surfer and girls with big boobs. Way cool!
