When it comes to calling it the "edge of space" it is a bit misleading as the international boundary for space is 100km (roughly 62 miles high or approximately 328,000ft in altitude). With that said this is an incredible feat none the less. Space Ship One featured the only private pilot to receive astronaut wings when that craft approached 360,000 ft.

You can see the curvature of the earth at sea level.Also, the wide angle lens made it look higher than it was. This is a more accurate view.

When I read a few days ago that he would assume the delta position, I thought he would dive out of the balloon (like diving into a pool) and assume it immediately.So, why didn't he do that? That would have avoided all that dangerous spinning. I wonder what speed he would have reached if he was in the delta position from the beginning.

The diving action would have started him tumbling. There is no air up there for resistance, so the goal is to bunny hop with as little motion as possible.
