It was opt in by branch. Apparently the air force did not opt in. My broader point was the framing was "Hegseth bans vaccine" when that was not what the memo stated. Apparently the navy in particular fought for keeping the mandate (related to the reasons discussed on the previous page).

You continue to talk with so much unearned confidence.

The "flu shot optional" policy was not opt-in, you had to request exceptions.

The memo gave commands 15 days to request exceptions, but gave no timetable on approval and still left DoD in charge of whether those exceptions were approved.

All your comments ignore the fact that current DoD leadership is doing their best to only put people who are blindly loyal to appeasing Trump in positions of authority and actively denying promotions or firing those who disagree with policy.

No one said SecDef banned the vaccine, but he did ban the mandate from being universally enforced, which is why the Air Force trainee vaccination rate when from 100% to less than 40.

The air force could have done what the navy did and kept it which was my original point. It appears the other branches did exactly that. You are free to discuss whatever frame you want. There's plenty of evidence that Hegseth sucks and you can nom nom nom all the content on it you want.

You said this before and I was ignoring boot camp and close quarter situations, which was dumb. Since someone on a boat or boot camp can't just work from home, I stated I changed my position. It's an exceptional case and agree now it should be mandated in those environments.

In addition, my understanding of the effectiveness was something like doesn't work at all most of the time, occasionally 90% when they guess it correctly, so like 4 years 1% 1 year 90% = 90+5/5 = 19%, but it's actually like (50 + 50 + 50 + 90 + 10) / 5 = 50%. So you lose half your crew when there is an outbreak of flu on average instead of 80% of it. They use multiple strains now in one flu vaccine now, so it increases the chance you get some coverage and even the strains that miss sometimes help.
