thats a good point; once you max all your followers for their perks it makes sense to take the lone wanderer perk and dogmeat.

You can put your companions in power armor, and it doesnt seem like they burn fusion cores (that I could tell). I put piper in one, she can carry a lot of stuff, and I can make her idolize me.

As a first time fallout player, it is getting kind of monotonous. I have no interest in building the towns/settlements at all. Tht process is boring as shit. I am level 17 and havent made it to diamond city yet as ive been clearing out all of the map starting from sanctuary through as south as the water treatment plant and as east as Hangman's alley.

How important are the settlements? Can i just ignore them after I free them of enemies?

Also dogmeat is completely gone from my game. I sent him back to sanctuary and he's no longer there or at any of the other settlements or red rocket

The thing about Fallout games (Bethesda in general) is they give you so many fucking things you can do, that it encourages replaying the game and making different choices. So as for settlements, you can completely ignore them. You can kill everyone there, ignore the missions, etc. It's really open world so it's just about what you want to do in this playthrough of the game.

^^you have to look really hard in sanctuary, there are a few doghouses behind regular houses where he sometimes hangs out. turn on settlement boundary and look behind every house, i think here is a doghouse behind one of the cul-de-sac circles.

but yea, there are some repeat missions that you can do over and over and over again (the missions you can get from the brotherhood people in the police station, for example. "quatermastery" and "clearing the commonwealth" will repeat infinitely with diff locations, i think). clearing out stuff w/out missions is pointless b/c they will become un-cleared at some point, also you level up way slower without missions. just pick a storyline and follow it through, if you get bored pick up another one when it comes about. use spoilers if you need to to try to figure out how to get more options. diamond city opens up a number or new options.

you do have to complete settlements up to a point if you want to go down the minutemen line; but you dont have to build them up just clear them and set up the recruitment beacons to finish the quests.

I am on my second playthrough; this time on survival difficulty and im going to pick a different faction to complete the game with. I have also somehow lost dogmeat; checked all the doghouses in sanctuary and even built one for him. oh well!

There's a fairly early main story quest that starts off in diamond city where dogmeat shows up to help even if he's not your follower. If you haven't reached that quest yet you can get him back then.

The settlement thing is cool since there are actual attacks on settlements that your defenses protect against, I just wish there was a way to scrap everything with 1 click. I hope the next Elder Scrolls expands on it.

so Macready's perk is a cheat code, 95% head shots even when torso is 10%.

Also, i am using the "ho's in diff area codes" strategy. My bisexual character has piper in sanctuary, macready in hangman alley and will stick cait somewhere on the other side of the map once i dump her, that way i can get my lovers embrace w/out going all the way to sanctuary!

^^ Macready's perk is a bug they haven't fixed yet.

Supposed to add 20% chance to hit but instead of coding it as a .2 (which would correspond to 20% the way the game is coded) increase they typed 20, so it's basically increasing your hit chance by 2000%

Anyone tried the survival beta? Survival is pretty fun so far. Played about 5 hours so far and I'm being extremely careful so I've only died once. Just made it to level 8 (Had my head blown off by a raider's shotgun). Also I cheesed that first Deathclaw by hiding in a building he can't get into and taking potshots at him with the minigun. I've done a few basic quests around the northwest, got Abernathy farm by clearing out the raiders at the military base, etc. Haven't gone down to Cambridge yet though and I hear the ghouls are incredibly scary and hardcore early game in survival. Just took over Starlight and built a bed so I figured that would be a good spot to save and end my session for tonight before I venture farther south tomorrow.

So far I'm really enjoying it but I'm in the first quadrant of the map still. We will see if it gets old once I've got missions that go from one end of the map to the other.

Since fast travel is disabled my plan is to play brotherhood for the vertibird beacons.

I don't think I have enough time or patience to beat the whole game on survival mode though.

Anyone played the VR version that just released?

I really want it but I only have Oculus, and the controls aren't optimized for the Rift touch, probably due to the lawsuit between Oculus and Bethesda. Supposedly it works but the menu is almost impossible to use with the thumb stick since it was designed for the touchpad of the Vive.

Well I broke down and bought it.

Everything is amazing EXCEPT the menus. For example I can't change tabs on the pip boy. Which means I can't access the inventory to pick a different gun. Which means when I run out of ammo for the starting 10mm I'm pretty much done until there's a fix.

However there are a few workarounds already, and I'm hoping there's a good fix soon.

I can't say I recommend it in it's current state if you have a Rift but I'm not going to request a refund, because I think soon it will be easily worth recommending.
