Has anyone used the vmware converter to convert their physical drive to a vm? The main question I have, (and this may sound stupid) is after the conversion is done, what is the state of the physical drive? Will it be blank now? Will it still be running original OS? My goal is to create a vm from my physical disk (without mucking up my current physical installation) and then within a week change the physical install to a linux install and use my current physical drive as a vm within linux.

your original drive will be unmolested.

Just make sure not to boot up the new VM the same time the old server is up if it's on the same network and if the ip is static and has a hostname

you can even do P2V while the physical system is online, in most cases.

yeah awesome I'm doing it now on my personal laptop. the plan is to put linux on it as the host, and vista on it as the guest. ditto with my PC but with XP as the guest.
