I want our next house to have a finished basement. If we are still in NC, prob won't be finding that kind of gem.

just fill it in with dirtproblem solved

is it a finished basement dealy?or is it like... a spider-laden murder cave below your house type of basement?

basements are pretty cool. it's like the one room in the house where anything goes and you can just stack shit anywhere, but also hang out.a buddy of mine growing up's basement was like that. countless hours playing vidya games. good times

its finished, not like drywalled and whatnotbut heated/cooled, wired, etc trying to clean out so it can be finished

the only basements in NC that i've seen sweat/leak like crazy...i think it's a combination of the soil and no one in the state knows how to build them worth squatso many houses have them in the midwest...it was weird to see so few in NC when i first got here

They're pretty popular in Georgia, and the soil isn't much different there. I think it's just people aren't used to having them.

^^I too think it is the soil that causes the leakes. Also, a lot of houses in the midwest have them because they are located in tornado alley.[Edited on March 28, 2012 at 9:46 PM. Reason : .]

they're fairly common up here in person county. cheapest square footage you can put in a house.[Edited on March 28, 2012 at 9:47 PM. Reason : i think it's the water table depth, not the soil]

^ that might be true...i'd love to have a house with a basement, though my current house is built on a hill and the "crawlspace" is something i cant stand up in on one side (and crawl through while squatting on the other)...it's where i store my tools, mower, etc and it serves the purpose well enough as i don't have a garage, either

Basements creep me the fuck out. My grandparents had a finished basement but it always smelled like they hid dead bodies down there.

I think I'm going to have to custom build a home. Because I'm fairly certain I'm going to require a basement and a walk up attic. And I'd like to have some good windows in the basement.

^ i'm with you in that...folks might be okay with prefab homes, but i have a bunch of features i want (and by features, i don't just mean finishes)...if i can afford to build one, that is, because having property is important to me, too (i don't need a lot, but i like our 1 acre and would PREFER not to have less)
